Transcription:

2009/TEL40/DSG/010 Agenda Item: 3.1 Computing Services in Green IT Purpose: Information Submitted by: Korea ICT Development Steering Group Meeting Cancun, Mexico 28-29 September 2009

Digital BigBang In 2007, the amount of stored information was about equal to available storage By 2011, almost half of the digital information will not have a permanent storage Worldwide Growth of Digital Information Created, Captured and Replicated +541% 2007 281 exabytes (281 billion gigabytes) 5-fold growth in 4 years 2011 1,800 exabytes Source : IDC

Why Digital BigBang Preservation of personal information Personal related information and User generated digital content Preserve their own backup storage Mobility and interaction between people Laptop PCs, ipods, mobile phones, and games E-mail, messages, social network Why Digital BigBang Non-traditional IT devices Wireless meter, RFID, and intelligent sensors The transition to Digital TV Broadcasting digital TV and most movies will be digital All of it involves storages New warehouse architecture needed

Why Computing Data intensive applications and data center pressures driving a business adopting of cloud and business requirements More efficient delivery and management of information and applications IT Infrastructure on-demand for bursty or unpredictable workloads Lower cost solutions for long term archiving of digital assets Computing Definition Computing is a paradigm of computing in which dynamically scalable and often virtualized resources are provided as a service over the internet (From wikipedia) The itself is a network of data centers The Operation of Computing Individual consumers Software developers Enterprises Governments

Computing PaaS SaaS IaaS Computing Utility Computing Grid Computing Different meanings for Different people is a business and technology concept with different meanings for different people For application and end users IT as a Service(ITaaS) Delivery of computing, storage, and applications For application development Platform as a Service(PaaS) An Internet SW development platform and runtime environment

Different meanings for Different people For infrastructure providers and administrators Infrastructure as a Service(IaaS) The massive, distributed data center infrastructure connected by IP networks ITaaS user PaaS developer IaaS administrator Services and Computing IT as Services Services: Consumer and business products, services and solutions that are delivered and consumed in real-time over the internet Applications Platform as-a-service Software as-a-service Collaboration App Dev & Deployment IT Management Storage Infrastructure as-a-service Servers/ Processing Vertical Services Retailing Heath Serviceses Financial Services Entertainment Government Services Supply Chain Services Public or private s Product Dev Services Storage Servers Network Equipment IT/Network Management Software Databases App Development/ Deployment Software Network Services Computing: IT supporting Services delivery IT Services Source : IDC

From Grid to Solving large tasks with networkdistributed parallel computing Grid Computing Offering computing resources as a metered service Utility Computing Network-based software delivery Software as a Service Next-gen. Internet Computing Computing Grid vs Computing A Grid is the combination of computer resources that are clustered together to solve a common task Scientific or business problem Higher computing power and large amount of data Collaborative large scale distributed computing system Complex inter-cluster networking

Grid vs Computing The distinctions between Grid and are not clear Similar goals of reducing computing costs and increasing flexibility and reliability A Grid provides a singular wide-area of data and computing resources adds the virtualization of hardware resources Utility vs Computing Utility computing is the packaging of computing resources, as a metered service similar to a physical public utility (From wikipedia) Utility computing is paying for what you use on shared resources Similar in terms of the customer value position Utility is a business model, and is a computing model

Go Green with the Before Service infrastructure(server, network, storage) Power/cooling required for running the system Constant and repeated all year around After Choose the computing power and resources Won t be paying the energy cost for running system Use what you need and pay for what you use Go Green with the Data Center and Server efficiency(epa, 2007) Data center energy more than doubled from 2000 to 2006 The power and cooling infrastructure accounts for 50% of data center total energy consumption

Benefit of No longer need to Maintain their own data centers Decreasing operating and maintenance costs Virtualization drives Consolidation of the IT infrastructure Reduction of energy consumption and IT cost Decreasing the number of servers and floor space in the data center This translates into new business opportunities for both government and enterprises Collaborative Work in the Research Topics Security in the Development Environment in the Open Source Software for usage and business model for the enterprise and government sectors Mobile Applications
