INTRODUCTION This Technical Reprt describes expanding Micrsft Windws basic disk vlumes when yu have increased the underlying PS Series Grup vlume size. Dell EqualLgic PS Series arrays ffer the ability t increase the capacity f NTFS vlumes withut disrupting nging applicatins, a critical need in tday s IT envirnment. Althugh basic disk vlume expansin des nt require a rebt f the perating system, and can be perfrmed while the file system is nline, the expansin may lck the file system fr several minutes. These peratins shuld always be dne and planned during system maintenance times. T recgnize the increased grup vlume size, hsts that are currently cnnected t a vlume must supprt file system expansin. Nt all perating systems, file systems, and applicatins supprt increasing the size f a vlume r behave in a predictable manner when a vlume size is increased. Befre making the change, be sure t understand hw the change affects the perating system, file system, r applicatin using the vlume. Ntes: Fr sme perating systems, if a disk is divided int multiple partitins yu may nly be able t use the new space t extend the size f the last partitin. Yu cannt decrease the size f a grup vlume. Because reserved snapsht and replicatin space is based n a percentage f the grup vlume size, increasing the size f a vlume with space reserved fr snapshts r replicatin will decrease free space n the grup and n the replicatin partner. Be sure t have sufficient free space befre increasing the vlume size. Expanding grup vlumes invlves the fllwing tasks: Increasing the size f the grup vlume Ensuring that the perating system, file system, r applicatin recgnizes the new size Extending the file system if necessary The fllwing sectins describe these tasks in detail. INCREASING THE SIZE OF A PS SERIES GROUP VOLUME First, identify the underlying PS Series grup vlume. If necessary, expand Vlumes in the left-hand clumn f the GUI t see a list f vlume names. As backup, create a snapsht f the underlying vlume r clne the vlume. Ensure there is sufficient snapsht reserve space fr the snapsht. Fr mre infrmatin n creating a snapsht r a clne, see the Grup Administratin manual. T increase the size f a PS Series vlume, click: Vlumes > vlume_name > Mdify vlume settings > Space tab The Mdify Vlume Settings General dialg bx appears. 3
Figure 1: Mdify Vlume Settings - Space When the vlume size is changed, the space utilizatin table is updated. If increasing the vlume size will exceed the capacity f the pl, the Free pl space table cell will turn red. Vlume reserve Grup space cnsumed by the vlume. Snapsht reserve Grup space reserved fr the vlume s snapshts. Replicatin reserve Grup space fr tracking vlume changes during replicatin (lcal reserve). Delegated space Space n the partner fr string vlume replicas (replica reserve). Free pl space Available strage space in the pl. The table shws hw space is utilized with the current vlume size and with the new vlume size. It als shws hw much additinal space is cnsumed by the vlume size change. This helps determine hw much t increase the file system. As a best practice partitins shuld nt exceed 2TB n Windws 2000, Windws XP, r Windws 2003 basic disk partitins and it is recmmended t use GPT partitins fr disk partitins exceeding 2TB in size n Windws 2008 editins. After making the size change, click OK. 4
ENSURING HOST RECOGNITION OF EXPANDED VOLUMES The fllwing prcedure describes hw t d ensure hst recgnitin fr Micrsft Windws Server basic disks. T ensure hst recgnitin f the expanded vlume: 1. Start the Cmputer Management cnsle frm Start All Prgrams Administrative Tls r right-click My Cmputer n the desktp and select Manage. 2. The Cmputer Management windw appears. Frm the Tree panel n the left, select Strage and then select Disk Management. 3. Pull dwn the Actin menu and select Rescan Disks. 4. Be sure the newly allcated space is shwn as unallcated. If the new space des nt shw up, a Targets rescan may be needed in the MS iscsi Initiatr. Rescan the Targets in the Initiatr and re-pen the Cmputer Management utility. The fllwing figure shws the unallcated space added t Disk 1: Figure 2: Windws Disk Management Utility Once the Cmputer Management utility recgnizes the newly-allcated strage, yu can extend the file system size. 5
EXTENDING THE FILE SYSTEM The steps fr extending the file system size are specific t each perating system. On Windws 2000, this task requires the DISKPART utility frm the Windws 2000 Server Resurce Kit. On Windws XP, Windws Server 2003 and Windws Server 2008, DISKPART.EXE is included as part f the base perating system. On Windws Server 2008 DISKPART is nly needed fr Cre Editin as the Extend cmmand is available in the Disk Management utility. Fr Windws Server 2000 dwnlad the DISKPART utility frm the fllwing lcatin: http://www.micrsft.cm/windws2000/techinf/reskit/tls/new/diskpart-.asp Fr ease f access, put a shrtcut t the DISKPART.EXE utility in the C:\WinNT\system32 directry. T use DISKPART.EXE t extend the Windws 2000 and 2003 file system partitin size: 1. Bring up an MS-DOS cmmand prmpt. Frm the Start Menu, select Run and enter cmd. 2. Invke the DISKPART utility: DISKPART.EXE If yu need t brwse t find DISKPART.EXE, select Run frm the Start menu and click Brwse t lcate the utility, referred t as DISKPART.EXE. 3. Obtain a list f Micrsft partitins (vlumes), as fllws: DISKPART> list vlume 4. Select the partitin (vlume) that yu want t extend. Fr example: DISKPART> select Vlume 4 Vlume 4 is the selected Vlume 5. Increase the partitin (vlume) size, as fllws: DISKPART> extend 6. When the disk expansin is cmplete, exit the DISKPART utility: DISKPART> exit The selected partitin will be extended, using all f the space added t the underlying PS Series grup vlume. In the fllwing figure, the grup vlume, vlume2, appears in the Label clumn and crrelates t Vlume 4. Ntes: Be careful t crrelate the drive letter assciated with the vlume with the drive letter listed by DISKPART. As the figure illustrates, t increase the size f the PS Series vlume named vlume2, yu have t select vlume 4 and enter the extend cmmand (in DISKPART). 6
Figure 3: DISKPART.EXE Utility Ntes: After the extend cmmand has cmpleted, the Disk Management utility may n lnger shw the drive letter assciated with the vlume. T display the drive letter, refresh the display by pressing the <F5> key. Als, if the same vlume is expanded again while DISKPART is still running and has the vlume selected, Disk Management will nt shw the results f the secnd expansin even if the display is refreshed r the Rescan disks cmmand is used. T enable Disk Management t display the new size, exit DISKPART and then issue the Rescan disks cmmand in Disk Management. Extending a File System in Windws Server 2008 Editins Windws Server 2008 has simplified this prcess by including the Extend cmmand in the Disk Management utility. Fllw the steps fr abve t increase the PS Series vlume and hst recgnitin f the new space. The Windws Server 2008 Full editins include the partitin Extend ptin in Disk Management. Simply right click n the partitin that is t be extended and use the Extend Vlume actin t start the Extend Vlume Wizard. This will step thrugh the partitin extensin using a GUI driven wizard tl. 7
Figure 4: Extend Optin in Windws Server 2008 If running Windws Server 2008 Cre Editin, fllw the steps earlier t use DISKPART.EXE t extend a vlume partitin. EXPANDING WINDOWS CLUSTER VOLUMES Expanding Windws cluster disks is similar t expanding stand-alne disks with the exceptin that the peratins must be dne n each cluster nde. After the vlume size has been increased n the PS Series Grup fllw these steps t extend the partitin f the cluster disk: 1. On the primary nde (nde that wns the cluster disk) refresh the Targets in the iscsi Initiatr. 2. Open Server Manager and rescan the disks in Disk Management. The new space shuld appear n the disk as Unallcated 3. On the standby nde repeat the same prcess. Be sure the unallcated space is recgnized n the standby nde as it was n the primary nde. 4. Back n the primary nde, expand the disk partitin using the DISKPART.EXE utility via cmmand line as described earlier in this dcument. 5. Once the partitin has been expanded n the primary nde, return t the standby nde and refresh/rescan the disks in Disk Management. The new expanded disk shuld shw. 6. Finally refresh the cluster in the Failver Cluster Management interface. 8
