About this Application The Who Wants to be? application allows you to create a game similar to the Who Wants to be a Millionaire game on television. You can add 10 to 100 multiplechoice questions to the application. A sample of the Who Wants to be? game can be found at the following URL in the GVTC Learning Object Repository: http://lor.gvtc.org/uploads/sec189/millionaire_content.html This application will be undergoing an extreme makeover soon, and will be renamed SmarTpants. Downloading Who Wants to be? 1. To download Who Wants to be?, click on the link below, or type the link into your Web Browser s URL field. Alternatively, you can click on the build your own tab from the LOR Home page. http://lor.gvtc.org/login.htm The LOR Login page displays as shown below. 2. Enter your E-mail ID and your password. The Build your Own page displays as seen below. 4. Click on the Who Wants to be? link as shown in the above graphic. The Download page displays. 5. Click on the Download zip of game files. The download window displays. 2004 Georgia Department of Technical and Adult Education 3
6. Click Save to save the file to your PC. The Save As window displays. 7. It is recommended that you save the zip folder to your desktop. However, if you would like to specify a different location, navigate to that location on your PC. 8. Click Save to save the zip file to your PC. The file downloads to your PC. 9. Creating a Learning Object To create a Who Wants to be? learning object, you will use the online tool. The tool will create an XML file that will be saved to your PC and then you will upload that file along with the other Who Wants to be? files to the LOR. Follow the instructions below to create your learning object. 1. From the Build your Own page, click on the Who Wants to be? link as shown below. The following page displays. 2. The New XML game page displays as shown below. 3. Using the following table, complete the information as your needs require. Field Description Introduction Conclusion Question X The introduction will display on the game s splash page. You can give a brief description of the game and any instructions you would like the student to have. You may also include your name as the author and your affiliation. Type a conclusion to display at the end of the game. Type your question in this field. You must create at least 10 questions. Difficulty Correct Answer Select the level of difficulty. The more difficult questions will be asked last. Type in the correct answer for this question. The application will shuffle your answers. 2004 Georgia Department of Technical and Adult Education 6
Field Description Answer X Type in the incorrect answers. 4. The following graphics display the input page and the result of inputting the information. 5. When you have completed entering in your test information, be sure to check your spelling and correct answers. 6. Click Submit Query as shown below. to scroll down to the button. The following window displays. 7. Click Save to save this file to your PC. The Save As window displays. 8. Save the file, test.xml to the same location that you saved the zipped file. (We recommended the desktop.) Uploading your Learning Object to the LOR GVTC strongly encourages all GVTC-LOR contributors to publish their learning objects for all GVTC-LOR community members. The GVTC-LOR is a community of educators who are involved in technical adult education. Community members may become contributors to help the GVTC-LOR grow by contributing learning objects. The greater number learning objects that get contributed, the stronger the GVTC-LOR community becomes. Follow the instructions below to upload your StudyMate Learning Object to the LOR. Prepare the Learning Object for Uploading To prepare your object for uploading to the LOR, you must first add the test.xml file to the millionaire.zip file. Follow the directions below to add test.xml to millionaire.zip. 1. Locate the folder in which you saved the millionaire.zip and the test.xml files. 2. Click and drag the text.xml file into the millionaire.zip file as seen in the following graphic. A box will display asking if you would like to add the file. 3. Click Yes/OK/Add to add the file (the responses will vary by the zip software that you are using). Uploading your Learning Objects Follow the instructions below to upload your learning object to the GVTC-LOR website. 1. From the Home page: http://lor.gvtc.org, click on the build your own tab. If you haven t already logged-in to this session, the log-in window displays. 2. Log-in using your Email ID and password. 3. Click on the On Your Own link as shown above. The following window displays. 2004 Georgia Department of Technical and Adult Education 11
4. Enter in the appropriate information for your learning object. 5. Browse to the location of the zipped file and click Save. The question Do you want this zipped file to be unpackaged on the server? will display when the system recognizes the zipped file. 6. Select Yes from the drop-down box. 7. Click Submit. 8. You MUST set the millionaire.html file as the home page. Click on the Set as home link for the HTML document as shown in the above graphic. An information box displays stating that you have successfully created the learning object. 9. Click OK to close the box. Publishing your Learning Object Before learning objects can be published, they must first be sent for approval. The approval process consists of peer reviews and quality assurance reviews. For more information on the approval process, see the GVTC-LOR User Guide. 1. From the Tracking Your Objects page, click on Send objects for approval as shown below. The Send Objects for Approval page displays. 2. Select the checkbox next to the Tracking ID as shown above. If you have multiple learning objects, you can send them for approval by selecting multiple checkboxes. 3. Click the Send for Approval button. An information box displays confirming that you wish to send the learning object for approval. 2004 Georgia Department of Technical and Adult Education 14
4. Click OK to send the learning object, or click Cancel to return to the Send objects for approval page. Upon clicking OK, a confirmation page displays. 5. To return to the Tracking Objects page, click on Main Page, which is located on the top banner as shown above. 6. Linking your Learning Object to Blackboard Learning objects that are used within your courses should be linked to the GVTC- LOR. Linking the item saves essential file space on the Blackboard server. Follow the directions below to link a learning object to your course. 1. Once you have found a learning object, either through browse or advanced search, right-click on the Object Title of the learning object that you wish to link to your Blackboard course. A pop-up menu displays as shown below. 2. Select Copy Shortcut from the pop-up menu. 3. In the web browser, navigate to the Blackboard website: http://gvtc6.blackboard.com. The Blackboard website displays. 4. Click Login. The Blackboard Login page displays. 5. Enter your USERNAME and PASSWORD in the appropriate fields. 6. Click Login. Your GVTC Blackboard page displays. 7. Click on the name of the course to which you are linking the learning object. 8. Click on the Control Panel, which is located on the lower left-hand side of your web-browser as shown above. 9. In the Content Area, select one of the following options: Course Information, Course Documents, Assignments, or External Links. 10. Click on External Link from the Add menu bar as shown above. The Add External Link page displays as shown below. 11. Type in the Name of the link. 12. Click the mouse cursor in the URL field and you will see a flashing vertical line. 13. Press [CTRL] + [V] on your keyboard. The URL address from the learning object displays in the URL field. 14. 15. Ensure that the following items are set to YES. Do you want to make the External Link visible? Launch item in external window. The other settings are optional. 16.
