31 Camtasia Recording Guidelines for Teaching 1. Remember that the primary use of Camtasia is to be able to SHOW and INSTRUCT your audience how to do things it enables audio and visual. If you are interested in only audio, consider Audacity or other software 2. Always state the objective of the Camtasia presentation to the students; what do you expect them to learn? How to you expect them to use the presentation? Should they take notes?; Should they listen to all in one sitting?, etc. 3. Instruct your students how to view the Camtasia presentation: a. To view in full screen, use F11 or the small square icon in the lower right of the presentation b. To Pause the presentation, use the double bar at the lower left of the presentation c. To exit the presentation, click on another area in the course site. 4. Limit your recordings to 15 minutes each. A good guideline is 2-3 minutes per slide. Make your presentation in sections if it needs to be longer, i.e., part1, etc. This will optimize file size for slower connections. 5. Use your slides as guidelines; don't read the text. 6. Attempt to have your students pause the presentation and "do" something before continuing. 7. Plan on no more than two minutes of students' attention per slide. 8. Engage students when you can ask questions or allude to an upcoming point. Include an interactive survey or quiz part of the advanced Camtasia features. 9. Be prepared before you start narrating have notes. v1.2: 2009 Page 31
