Institutional framework for addressing issues related to disaster risk management formed and a draft Disaster Management Policy developed. b. A Project Steering Committee (PSC) was formed to initially work on the institutional framework/ mechanisms on disaster management in the country. c. International consultant hired by UNDP, assisted the Government of Maldives to develop and finalize its National Policy on Disaster Management and institutional mechanism.

Establishment and Strengthening of National Platform. d. A final draft policy document is completed and has been forwarded to the Maldives Law Commission for technical review. e. The proposed national policy on disaster management is expected to be endorsed by the Parliament for the adoption and passing into law soon. a. Disaster information and inventory management system has been initiated and the disaster inventory database has been developed. b. Disaster resource network has been setup in the National Disaster Management Center. c. Discussion has been initiated with the Ministry of Education to incorporated disaster risk management elements in the school curriculum. d. Development of Safer Islands

e. A team of 5 members comprising of key technical officers/personals of Ministry of Education along with UNDP DRM Program Officer went on a study tour to two states in India to observe and obtain insights of lessons learned and best practices on integrating disaster risk management concepts in both curricular and cocurricular activities of Ministry of Education. f. Vulnerability and risk Profile for the country prepared. The report was published and formally released in June 2006. Key findings of the report informed policy making and development planning process of the country. Building upon the key findings of the Disaster Risk Profile, a detail risk analysis of 9 islands designated as Safe Islands by the government is being pursued. g. National and 5 Regional Emergency Operation s Centers (EOC) are now in place and functional. UNDP supported the Ministry of Defense and National Security with equipment to lead emergency management functions at the national and regional level. Furthermore, a Standard Operating Procedure was developed for the EOC. h. Development of atoll and island community level disaster preparedness plans. On 13 Islands in 2 Atolls these plans have been done with the assistance of UNDP and have formed functional emergency management committee and island task force.

e. Training / Capacity Building and Awareness Raising Activities. - As part of the long-term goals of the Disaster Management Program to enhance and strengthen the disaster risk management capacity of the country, about 200 people are trained in various skills and aspects of disaster management at the national, atoll and island level during 2006. f. Mainstreaming Disaster Risk Reduction - The 7 th National Development Plan has included among its priorities the aim to making Maldives safe and secure from natural disasters, eliminate risks to life & property, deliver efficient and prompt relief support and educate the public on hazard and risks. g. Maldives has adopted the build back better principles integrated in reconstruction. h. Sound construction methods and quality assurance carried out during construction. i. National Early Warning System (EWS) has been established, and installation of the system ongoing.
