Cisco Academy Year 1 Instructor: Ken Shade *Parents, please read the following with your student and sign.* Course Description: The goal of this course is to introduce students to fundamental networking concepts and technologies. This course provides, hands-on, introduction to networking, using tools and hardware commonly found in an Enterprise environment. This course will assist students in developing the skills necessary to plan and implement small medium size networks across a range of applications. Students will gain the skills needed to obtain entry-level Cyber Security jobs while also acquiring the skills needed for network technician, computer technician, cable installer, network installer, and help desk technician jobs. Upon successfully completing year 1 of this course, students will be eligible to sit for the ICND 1 (100-105) exam for the Cisco Certified Entry Network Technician (CCENT). This sequence of courses is an excellent pathway to the study and practice of Cyber Security, Computer Engineering, Applied Information Systems, Information Systems or Information Technology at the university level. An articulation agreement is available with AACC for students who successfully complete this program. Instructional Philosophy: Each student is expected to attend class every day, arrive prepared with the required materials, be pre-read over chapter reading material, participate in class activities, review materials introduced and complete all homework assignments to reinforce activities covered in class. Students will work on independent activities or with their peers in groups after being introduced to subject matter. Any assigned work not completed within the classroom is homework. The students will be assessed using multiple tools, including audiovisual, practical applications, written, and industry-standard online assessments. Students must have access to the Internet at home and must possess a personal computer because the curriculum is entirely online. Notes will be taken primarily using analog methods. Access to learning management sites like Cisco Netspace is required for this course because assignments will be given primarily using this website. If your student does not have an email address please create a professional email for your student before class. I recommend Google using Double Authentication. Students will be provided with login information to Cisco s Netspace on the first day of school. If a student has any issues with online access at home, please inform the instructor IMMEDIATELY. Instructional Environment: We will be working with very expensive and delicate equipment. Students will need to adhere to the following guidelines: Maintain a professional, cooperative, and mutually supportive environment at all times. All school system and building protocols are to be followed to the letter. Food or drink is not permitted around the computers in the classroom.

Remember, working in IT (information technology) involves people first; if we are to work well together, we must be an effective team. Required Fees: Students are required to take the first certification test at the end of course. Exam fees cost $165 for the ICND1 (100-105) exam. Students who pass the Cisco specific final exam for the course, only one attempt is allowed, are eligible for a 60% discount on the ICND1 (100-105) certification exam fee. Typically, certification exams are completed at the end of the class year, beginning of May. Content Outline: In order to complete the year one curriculum, students will complete Introduction to Networks listed below: the curriculum is located at http://www.netacad.com. Students will receive a username and password to access the online curriculum on the first day of class. Cisco Academy Course: Introduction to Networks 1. Exploring the Network 2. 2. Category Weights a. Level One 50% - Summative Assessments (examples are Chapter Exams, Skill Exams, and ICND1 prep work) 25% - Formative Assessments (Labs broken down into classwork (15%) and homework (10%)) 10% - Quarterly Assessments 15% - Work Habits 3. Due Dates / Late Work a. All assignments will have a due date. Assignments submitted after the due date will be penalized on a sliding scale basis. The final due date for late work submission shall be five school days from the original due date. i. Sliding Scale: 1. Minus ten points for each day after due date to the minimum of fifty points which the student makes a good faith effort to meet the basic requirements determined by the Instructor Prior to the assignment given, if not, a zero will be provided to the student for the assignment. 4. Opportunity for Mastery: a. Per AACPS regulation, students may redo up to three assessments, assignments (Labs) or projects (Skill Assessments) each quarter. Students are encouraged, but not required, to participate in teacher-led re-teaching. All redo items must be completed within ten days from receiving original grade. b. Original assignment, assessment, or project must be submitted on time. c. Only one redo per assignment, counting the highest grade. d. Exceptions to redo include Homework assignments, the cumulative grade of multi part assignments (individual parts may be eligible), any item due the last week of the marking period, quarterly assessments, and Cisco specific End or Curriculum exams. e. Redo attempts will be tracked in the Power teacher gradebook. 5. Minimum Grades A minimum grade of 50% will be assigned to assignments or assessments for which the student made a good faith effort, as determined by the teacher, to meet the basic requirements. If a student does no work on an assignment or assessment, the teacher will assign a grade of zero. 6. Group Work Grades On occasion, students will be asked to work in small groups on a variety of assignments. In those cases, each student will be individually assessed and assigned a grade that reflects their own level of success in meeting the outcomes for that particular assignment. 7. Academic Integrity A student who exhibits academic dishonesty, as determined by the teacher and administrator will receive a zero on the particular assessment/assignment in question. Violations of the Academic Integrity Policy and Regulation may result in disciplinary action. Consequences for violations may vary according to the severity of the violation and shall follow the progressive interventions and discipline as outlined in the Student Code of Conduct. Students who continue to exhibit academic dishonesty, may be required to leave the program. 8. Credits Earned Students will earn 2 Computer/Networking Technology Credits for taking the year one course. 9. Proficiency Credits Students will be eligible for up to 8 proficiency credits from AACC if they successfully complete the two courses with a minimum of C on the Networking Academy gradebook for each course. Please note that the grading scale on the Networking Academy gradebook is aligned to AACC grading scale providing the students with a peak at college level grading scales.

10. Promotion In order to continue with this program, students are required to maintain a C average every semester. Assessment Information There will be at least one grade per week in each assessment category (formative and summative) for course content, skills, and mastery in addition to homework.
