Accessing your Inter-Library Loan document via the British Library s On Demand service When you request an article from a journal or conference proceedings, or a book chapter, it will be supplied by the British Library as a downloadable pdf. Here is a simple, step-by-step guide on how you can retrieve and view your document. Once the British Library has prepared your document they will send an email which contains a special link to their On Demand website which can be used to access and download your document. The email will either be forwarded from interloans@city.ac.uk, or sent direct from noreply@bldss.bl.uk. This is an example of what the email will look like: Please select the first link (blue URL) which is the unique link to your document. You should now see the following page with the heading, Download your encrypted document :

Registering with On Demand In order to access your document you must be registered with the On Demand service. Registration is simple and you only need to complete this process once (please note, there is a 5-10 minute delay after registering before you can download your document). Once registered, you will have a Username and Password which you can use to open your document. If you have not already registered, you can do so now by selecting the Register for On Demand link. A web form will open:

To use On Demand you will need a British Library Online Account: If you already have a British Library Online account (perhaps from having visited the BL and using their Reading Rooms), then you will be able to use this account to register with On Demand. If so, enter your username and password in the top half of the screen and skip to the next section. If you do not have a British Library online account, select the Register link at the bottom of the screen, then follow the instructions provided. Once you have created an online account you will be able to login and use the On Demand service.

When you register for a British Library Online Account, you will be sent an email from the British Library asking you to confirm your registration: It is important that you select the link provided to confirm your registration- if you do not confirm your registration, you will not be able to access your document. Once you have confirmed your registration you will be directed to an online form and asked to confirm contact details including your delivery address. Select Next to confirm that you accept the British Library s Terms and Conditions before completing the process by selecting Finish. Congratulations, you have now successfully registered to use the On Demand service. Accessing your document To download your document go back to the Download your encrypted document page, either by returning to the tab/window it is open in, selecting through from the email again, or using the Back button in your browser:

Test document Before downloading for the first time, please check that you are able to download your document by trying the Test Document. First, select the PDF Test icon in the bottom right of the screen, enter the email account you have used to register with the British Library, then select to Open the downloaded document. With both the Test Document and your Inter-Library Loan, you will need to sign-in using your BL Username and Password when prompted:

You will be given the option to be remembered on your own personal device so that you do not have to sign-in again each time you access a downloaded document. Next you will see this dialogue box appear: Select Yes if you are using your own personal device where it will be fine to be remembered or view content offline, but select No if you are using a publicly shared device.

If successful, your test document will display a congratulations message: If the document does not open, check to make sure you have Adobe Reader installed on your device. You can return to the previous screen: and download Adobe Reader for free by selecting the Adobe icon (bottom left of screen). If you have successfully opened the Test Document then you should now be able to open your Inter-Library Loan. Return to the document download screen again:

Now, enter your On Demand username or email address in the box available and then select the Download your document link. You should be able to download your pdf. document and then save it to a location of your choice. From now on, anytime you wish to open your document, all you will need to do is select to open the pdf. and enter your Username and Password when prompted. Important information about your Inter-Library Loan As soon as your Inter-Library Loan request is available, you will be sent an email containing a link to access your article You will have 30 days in which to access the link and open the document When you access the link the file is locked to your account and cannot be downloaded by another user You are able to access this document for up to 3 years You are only permitted to print one copy.

Troubleshooting If you have any problems accessing your article, or if you would prefer to collect a hard copy from the Library, please let the Inter-Library Loans Team know by including details on the request, or by emailing us directly: interloans@city.ac.uk. Here are some tips to solve common problems experienced when trying to access documents for the first time: There is a 5-10 minute delay after registering before you can download and access your Inter-Library Loan document Clearing your device s cookies/cache can often help with problems logging-in with your On Demand Username and Password Using Google Chrome as your web browser?
