CHAPTER 1 Introduction The ACTI-777 all-in-one single board computer is designed to fit a high performance Pentium-III FC-PGA based CPU and compatible for high-end computer system application with PCI/ISA bus architecture. It is made to meet today s demanding pace, and keep complete compatibility with hardware and software designed for the IBM PC/AT. With the on-board AGP VGA and fast Ethernet interface being supported, it's beneficial to build up a high performance and high data availability system for VARs, or system integrators. This single board computer can run with one or dual Intel Pentium-III (Coppermine) processors up to 800 MHz, and support RIMM module up to 512MB. The enhanced on-board PCI IDE interface can support 4 drives up to PIO mode 4 timing and Ultra DMA/33/66 synchronous mode feature. The on-board Super I/O Chipset integrates floppy controller, two serial ports, one Infrared port and one parallel port. Two high performance 16C550-compatible UARTs provide 16-byte send/receive FIFOs, and the multi-mode parallel port supports SPP/EPP/ECP function. Besides, two USB (Universal Serial Bus) ports provide high-speed data communication between peripherals and PC. The PICMG standard makes the ACTI-777 works with the legacy ISA, ISA/PCI or multi-slots PCI-bus backplane. The on-board 32-pin DIP sockets support M- systems DiskOnChip 2000 product up to 144MB. The Watch-Dog Timer function can monitor your system status. One 6-pin Mini-DIN connectors (with Y-cable) is provided to connect PS/2 Mouse and Keyboard. The on-board Flash ROM is used to make the BIOS update easier. Two Standard 5-1/4 disk drive power connectors are reserved to directly get more power energy for large power applications, and the additional 5-pin shrouded connector is reserved for connecting Keyboard interface on the backplane. The high precision Real Time Clock/calendar is built in to support Y2K for accurate scheduling and storing configuration information. One 4-pin header is designed to support ATX power function. All of these features make ACTI-777 excellent in stand-alone applications. ACTI-777 User s Manual 1-1

What are RDRAMs? Rambus technology is incorporated onto dynamic-random-access-memory (DRAM) chips and the logic devices that control them. The current generation, Direct Rambus DRAM, delivers more than ten times the performance of conventional DRAMs. A single RDRAM currently transfers data at speeds up to 800MHz over a narrow, Rambus Channel to Rambus compatible ICs. What are the benefits of Rambus memory systems? Rambus memory allows your PC to reach best-of-class performance. That means you have more performance for today s applications, and in particular, for tomorrow s emerging data-intensive applications like voice recognition and image manipulation. Higher memory performance means you ll be more productive and enjoy longer life of your PC. Why is Rambus memory needed in PCs today? Powerful PCs are now required to quickly and easily navigate the tremendous amounts of information available to users as the Internet is increasingly used for business and entertainment. Rambus memory is designed to meet that challenge and future challenges. How will PC users benefit from the faster Rambus memory? Rambus memory is designed to help power an Internet experience filled with rich audio, video, animations and 3-D graphics that makes information come alive. Whether on or off the Internet, Rambus' high performance is ideal for the Pentium III processor s Internet Streaming SIMD Extensions. The Pentium III and Rambus memory provide the most advanced computing experience for business users as e-commerce, data visualization, streaming audio, video and speech recognition applications become more pervasive. What are the benefits of Rambus DRAM versus PC100 SDRAM? Rambus DRAMs provide the increased performance headroom to enable the next generation of applications requiring more bandwidth than current memory technologies can provide. A single RDRAM will deliver three times the bandwidth of a comparable SDRAM PC100 memory system. Can Rambus RIMM modules be used in PCs that support PC100 SDRAM Modules? Rambus RIMM modules can only be used on motherboards and with chipsets that are designed specifically to support Rambus memory. Existing PCs that use PC100 SDRAM memory cannot be upgraded to support Rambus memory without upgrading the motherboard and chipset. ACTI-777 User s Manual 1-2

Are Rambus memory systems able to support Error Checking and Correction (ECC)? Yes, similar to today s PC100 SDRAM memory, OEMs are able to offer Rambus memory with ECC support for higher end systems, or with non-ecc support for more cost-sensitive computer systems. The Intel 840 chipset and Rambus memory were specifically designed to meet the needs of high performance single- and multi-processor systems. The 840 chipset, dual Rambus Channels providing up to 3.2 GB/sec memory bandwidth together with the latest Intel Pentium lll processors, enables new levels of performance, scalability, and end user productivity. Platforms using the Intel 840 chipset and two Rambus memory Channels provide high performance and ample headroom for maximum productivity. ACTI-777 User s Manual 1-3
