1 Product Adlib PDF is the next-generation of document-to-pdf technology designed to provide accurate, scalable and highly available transformation services to improve business process automation. Its design offers a high degree of flexibility for developing systems and an intuitive, interactive interface enables administrators to set up, configure, and troubleshoot systems that are easily configured to fulfill each user s unique requirements. 2 Documentation The following documents can be accessed by clicking the Help button within the Adlib PDF application: Adlib PDF Quick Start Guide Adlib PDF User Guide Adlib PDF Installation Guide Adlib PDF Technical Reference Guide Adlib PDF SharePoint Workflows Connector Guide Page 4 of 16

3 New Features The following features have been added since the Adlib PDF 1.2 release. 3.1 Architecture New Feature Oracle Database SQL Express Database Growth Management Table 1 Database Features Support has been introduced for the Oracle Database, version 11G. We now offer customers the option to install a SQL Express database along with Adlib PDF for those who do not require the large scale capacity of an enterprise database. Adlib PDF now offers customers an automated tool to control database size. For SQL Express users, the database size is automatically capped at 4 GB for Express 2005 and 10 GB for Express 2008. For SQL Server and Oracle Databases, administrators can configure a by-age record clean-up. This process runs once a day and purges any job information that is older than the configured age. By default, the Database Growth Management procedure will purge jobs and any associated child records older than 90 days at 2:00am local time, but these parameters can be modified to suit the user s specific needs. Table 2 Connector Features New Feature SharePoint Workflow Connector Multiple Sources SharePoint Workflow Connector Installer Improvements SharePoint Workflow Connector Installer Option to Hide Solution Users can now create multiple connections (Sources) to Microsoft SharePoint so that multiple collections of job processing rules (Instruction Sets) can be configured to service the needs of each user group. Previously, only one set of rules had to meet the needs of all users as each Source can be associated with only one Instruction Set. The SharePoint Workflow Connector can now be installed only once and deployed across an entire SharePoint farm. During installation of the SharePoint Workflow Connector, the administrator now has the option to hide the site collection feature in the site collection feature gallery in order to limit access to our workflows. A shell script can be Page 5 of 16

run to expose it for use as necessary. 3.2 Job Processing Table 3 Management Console and Components New Feature User Account Email Search Instruction Sets Logging Web Services Improvements Re-Initialize Components Upon Publish of Environment An email address is now captured during installation which will be utilized by future functionality. In order to better manage a large number of Instruction Sets, users can now search for Instruction Set names using full or partial search terms. In an effort to simplify job monitoring, Info level logging messages have been streamlined and reduced. The Web Services interface Component registration process has been simplified. Changes to Component configurations can now be enabled by performing a Publish event of the Environment where the Component is located. The user is no longer required to restart the Process Manager service in the Component location in order to activate changes. Table 4 Rules and Job Processing New Feature PDF Optimization PDF/A 1a New OCR Settings Available By default, duplicate fonts, images, ICC profiles and other data streams are removed when jobs are processed in order to produce optimized PDF output. Image down-sampling settings for compression and maximum resolution of black and white, greyscale and color images can also be configured according to user requirements in the Optimize Transformation Rule Setting. Adlib PDF can now produce PDF output that reliably meets the PDF/A 1a standard. The following three settings have been added to the OCR Transformation Rule Setting: Rotate Deskew Word Correction The rotate and deskew settings are enabled by default when the OCR Rule Setting is added to an Instruction Set. These settings may improve the accuracy of text Page 6 of 16

recognition. Page 7 of 16

4 Known Limitations 4.1 License Transactions Feature Adlib License Manager Table 5 License Transaction Limitations Online license transaction Port 80 requirement The Online license transaction method requires Port 80 to communicate with the Adlib License Server. Note: Please ensure that this Port is not blocked by a Firewall or other security measures. Offline license transaction Initial installation On systems where Adlib PDF has never been previously installed the Offline license transaction method will require the Request and Response file steps to be performed twice. All subsequent Offline license transactions will only require a single Request and Response file step to be performed. 4.2 Job Processing Feature PDF/A Table 6 Known Job Processing Limitations Font width interpretation e_pdfa3_6_1: Widths in embedded font are inconsistent with /Widths entry in the font dictionary. This PDF/A validation error is a result of ambiguity in the PDF/A specification: "6.3.6 Font metrics Note: For every font embedded in a conforming file, the glyph width information stored in the Widths entry of the font dictionary and in the embedded font program shall be consistent." Currently the Transformation Server PDF/A preflight interpretation of "consistent" errors on the strict side. This tolerance may be loosened slightly in a future release PDF input files with CMYK output intent Page 8 of 16

PDF/A document creation with an output intent of CMYK is not supported via OCR processing. Crystal Reports input files Crystal Reports files are not currently supported. Microsoft Word 2003 Adlib CAD Support Microsoft Word 2003 rendering on Multi-CPU Servers and/or Multi-Core servers When processing complex Word documents with Word 2003 on servers with Multiple CPUs and/or Cores, dialog boxes may start popping up and either slow down rendering by several hours, or make documents not render at all. Note: Switching to Single CPU/Single Core or upgrading to Microsoft Word 2007/2010 will mitigate this issue. Pen width Pen width cannot be explicitly set. 3D CAD files 3D CAD files are not supported except for DWG and DGN which will be printed as wireframe. Adlib CAD Evaluation The Adlib CAD evaluation only supports 1000 rendered CAD pages (regardless of the 30-day Adlib PDF evaluation period). Net-It Enterprise.NET Service (permissions) The service: Net-It Enterprise.NET Service needs to have permission to access the location where the input files reside. The service also needs permission to read and write to the defined Transformation Engine Work folder (e.g C:\Adlib Engine\Work) and all of its subfolders. The default service account is: Local System Account. If the above is not configured ECAD will fail to render the input file. Debug logs will report that ECAD could not read the input file. Content Hyperlinks Embedded Resources Hyperlinks within embedded resources, like Microsoft Visio, are not supported. Endnotes/Footnotes Some endnotes/footnotes, that are marked with a color by the Track Changes feature (aka Markup Options), will not be available Page 9 of 16

as links (this is a Microsoft Word limitation). Microsoft Word 2007/2010 (NAS) Multiline hyperlinks will appear as multiple boxes (1 per line), not as one combined box. Only the hyperlinks on first page will function for multiline hyperlinks that span multiple pages in a table. Internal hyperlinks which point to invalid/removed locations inside document will not be preserved. Hyperlinks within headers/footers are not supported. Some content hyperlinks are not positioned correctly when Track Changes has been enabled in the source document. Note: Requires the installation of Microsoft Office 2007 Service Pack 2 in order to accommodate accurate content hyperlink creation. Adlib Viewer Support Post Script Using the Adlib Viewer to convert PostScript files to PDF may result in lower quality PDFs with missing data. MSG Processing Email attachment processing is not supported by the Adlib Viewer and is only supported via Native Application (Microsoft Outlook) or the Generic Viewer. Note: MSG files may only be rendered using the Generic Viewer option when the Transformation Engine has been configured to run as a Service. Content Bookmarks The creation of content bookmarks (ie. MS Word heading styles/ms Excel worksheets -> PDF bookmarks) is not supported through Adlib Viewer processing. Bookmarks with JavaScript in PDF input files are not supported. Create PDF Pop-up Notes (from MS Word Comments) The creation of PDF Pop-up Notes from MS Word Comments is not supported through Adlib Viewer processing. Font Embedding Non-Unicode TrueType fonts will be fully embedded. Type 1 fonts will be fully embedded. When specifying the font name of a TrueType font (using the FontExtended functionality), the name as it appears in MS Word Page 10 of 16

font list should typically be used. Lossy Compression Lossy compression does not provide significant file size reduction compared to lossless compression. Generic Viewer Support XSL-FO MSG Processing Microsoft Outlook must be installed in order for the Generic Viewer to successfully render the MSG file. The reason for this is that specific Outlook libraries are utilized by the Generic Viewer to read specific MSG information. Content Bookmarks Ensure that the setting Retain Existing PDF Bookmarks is enabled for the bookmarks defined within the XSL-FO itself to be maintained in the output PDF. PDF Compression Settings The following settings (defined in the UI or Job Ticket) are not applied to the output PDF: Convert Colors to Grayscale, Page Content Compression, Resolution, Downsample Images to PDF Resolution, Color Image Compression, Compression Level. Windows Server 2003 In some cases, a file with an.fo extension will cause Adlib PDF to hang if.fo is registered under Windows Explorer as a known file type to be opened by a specific application. The work around is to remove.fo from Windows Explorer's list of known file types. InfoPath Requires at least Microsoft Office InfoPath 2003 with Service Pack 1 installed to perform rendering The template file referenced in the form data XML file must be accessible by the Transformation Engine doing the rendering (UNC recommended) InfoPath form template files (.XSN) are not supported Create PDF Pop-up Notes Images/WordArt in MS Word comments are not supported; it will cause all pop-up note creation to fail. Text formatting (font, style, size) in MS Word comments are not supported; pop-up notes are created with plain text. Asian (and other non-latin) character sets are partially supported, based on the limited Unicode character sets supported by Adobe Acrobat/Reader. Page 11 of 16

Visible markup (track changes, comments) will result in improperly positioned pop-up notes. 4.3 PDF Version Compatibility Table 7 PDF Version Downgrade Known Problems Known Problem Enhanced Support for Fonts with Unicode or Unicode like Encodings Missing Fonts from Resource Dictionary Transparencies Not Supported Occasional Exception Error PDF Open Settings are not Maintained Documents that implement fonts with Unicode or Unicode like encodings may produce PDF text dissimilar from the original document. Some fonts will fail to be referenced properly in a resource dictionary for certain PDF object dictionaries. A message box will appear displaying the following error: Could not find a font in the Resources dictionary using Helvetica instead. Transparencies are not supported. This includes watermarks/headers/footers produced by Adlib PDF with the opacity property (C or little c for both stroking and non-stroking operations) set. The following error may occur intermittently: The server threw an exception. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80010105 (RPC_E_SERVERFAULT)). Specific open settings defined in the original document are not maintained in the resulting document. The general PDF viewer application defaults will be used instead. PDF Text Positioning not Maintained Optimize for Fast Web View Large Documents PDF Annotation Support PDF Documents that implement Widgets, Crop Boxes and JavaScript PDF Documents with Text position adjustments specified in a TJ array in the original document are not maintained in the resulting document. This causes some characters to be spaced too close or too far away from each other. Adlib PDF will not retain the Optimize (aka Fast Web View) setting as it is set in the source PDF. Note: Adlib PDF will set the Optimize for Fast Web View setting according to the explicit value set in the Fast Web View Transformation Rule. Large PDF documents (documents with 1000+ pages) may have difficulty successfully downgrading. Partial support for link annotations. Documents of this type will produce a PDF with errors or an incorrect page size. Documents that use these fonts may cause the following error to Page 12 of 16

Geneva, T1 and Helvetica Condensed PDF Documents that Implement Solid Stroked Lines Document Uses Layers appear in Acrobat: The font <font name> Condensed contains a bad /BBox or The font <font name> Condensed contains an invalid width array. Documents that implement this PDF feature may produce documents that cause the following error in Acrobat Reader: Dash arguments are invalid. Some PDF documents that implement layers may not flatten and therefore will not be PDF Version 1.4 compliant. 4.4 OCR Processing Limitation PDF documents with CID Keyed Fonts JPEG Compression GIF Support Multi-page GIF Support PDF/A with CMYK output intent Table 8 OCR Processing Limitations CID-keyed fonts consist of CIDFont files which contain the character descriptions (outline, hinting information) and a set of CMap (Character Map) files, which are used for the mapping from the CID (Character ID) to the character code in the desired encoding. The recognition engine will interpret the Character ID as the character code (instead of retrieving the character code from the CMap) and cause the image text and invisible text to be garbled. TIFF documents that implement legacy JPEG compression are not supported. Conversion and recognition of GIF images will assume that the GIF image resolution is 200 DPI (105143) Potential for the resulting PDF to be slightly larger than the original image size since many GIF images do not store resolution information For instance: o Image size of 2550 x 3300 pixels will produce a PDF with a page size of 12.75 x 16.5 When 300 DPI is assumed, the resulting PDF will have a page size of 8.5 x 11.0 Conversion and recognition of multi-page GIF documents will result in a PDF document of the first page of the original image (105127). Multi-page GIF documents are not fully supported. PDF/A document creation with an output intent of CMYK is not supported. Page 13 of 16

4.5 Extended Outputs Limitation HTML Output Table 9 Extended Output Limitations Image Resolution Setting the Image Resolution to anything other than Automatic may cause some documents to fail. Hyperlinks Setting the Image Resolution to anything other than Automatic may cause some documents to fail. PDFProcessing Post-processing is not supported when using Export schemas (e.g. MicrosoftExcelExport, MicrosoftPowerPointExport, MicrosoftWordExport). PDF Encoding PDF files (Acrobat 5+) with certain types of text encoding will cause processing to fail. Mozilla Firefox Compatibility <SPAN elements are created in the Output file (HTML). These elements are not interpreted by Mozilla Firefox (Microsoft Internet Explorer does handle them). Removing the <SPAN elements (in their entirety) will allow the Output to load in Mozilla Firefox. Note: Output created via the Export schemas will not contain <SPAN elements and will load in Mozilla Firefox. PDF Forms PDF source documents that contain PDF Forms may have fidelity issues (ie. positioning, shifted content, incorrect rotation) Image Output Color LZW Compression The Color LZW compression option is not supported Font Substitution When fonts are not available on the system performing the conversion, font substitution will occur in the resulting document unless the font is fully embedded in the source PDF. Page 14 of 16

Pagination Issues Adlib PDF does not implement the Preserve Character Spacing option in the Office Output module. This does cause pagination issues from time to time but the resulting document is easier to edit. Secured PDF PDF documents that are secured with a PDF password cannot be processed. Page 15 of 16
