Online Reading List Guide for Academic Staff Getting Started Our online Reading Lists system (Talis Aspire)is a web-based system for managing and sharing reading lists: A single, easy to use, place for students to access their reading lists via the VLE: SurreyLearn. The process of ensuring your students can accessall listed resources via the Library begins with module convenors updating their lists on a regular basis and submitting these for library review. To access Online Reading Lists, visit aspire.surrey.ac.uk or follow the link in your SurreyLearn module. When you access Aspire for the first time: Contact your Faculty Engagement Librarian, who will send you an invitation to create a new account and accept the role of List publisher. When you accept the invitation, log in to the Online Reading Lists system (Aspire) using your university username and password. You will be prompted to set up a quick user profile. Please make your profile public so that the library can pass ownership of lists to you. Aspire will work on any browser, but we recommend that you use Google Chrome which is faster and less prone to problems. This button will allow Go to the My Bookmarks tab Click Install Bookmark Button Follow the instructions they will appear as below. This will allow you to add the button to your bookmarks/favourites bar. Note that the instructions differ slightly according to which browser you use, which Aspire automatically detects.
1. Bookmarking Save resources to your profile using a simple process called bookmarking The general steps for bookmarking a resource are as follows: 1. Find the item online 2. Click 3. Check the bookmark and edit if necessary: Resource Type Choose the appropriate resource type from the drop down menu, e.g. book, article or journal For the clearest bookmarks, try to include: 1. Resource Type 2. Title 3. Author/s 4. Date Add Field Add extra fields if necessary, e.g. volume, issue or page nos. Add a manual bookmark You can easily create a bookmark from scratch by going to My Bookmarks and clicking Add->Add manually Click Create Your bookmark will be stored in the My Bookmarks tab of your Aspire profile.
2. Adding bookmarks to your list Open your list and go to Edit>Edit list. Your bookmarks will appear on the right hand side and can be dragged and dropped into the list using the cursor. Once the item appears in the list, please click on the link and select a reading category from the drop-down list, e.g. Essential, Recommended or Background Reading. Click on Edit notes and importance to: enter a student note, e.g. to advise them to read a specific chapter or section; enter a library note with anything you would like library staff to be aware of; change item importance.
3. Requesting digitisation of material In edit list mode you will see a link below each item that says Request Digitisation Click on this link and follow through the form on the screen, entering the required information (specific section, author/s, page numbers, etc) The course details fields should automatically populate from the list. Please ignore the needed by date. If you have a copyright cleared PDF of the item (please note it MUST be copyright cleared before it can be uploaded if you are unsure do NOT upload and instead refer to the Library), then click Choose file to find the PDF and check the tick box to confirm the PDF complies with the information given about the item. If you wish to request more than one chapter s worth or 10% of content from the same item, please be aware this falls outside the scope of the CLA HE Licence and additional copyright permission will need to be sought. The Library is happy to seek permission for multiple chapters from one item or items not covered by the CLA HE licence. Create separate bookmarks for each chapter or section that you require, and submit the requests in order of preference of requirement. The Library will then seek copyright permission for these. If permission is not obtainable, the request(s) (over and above the first chapter/section) will be rejected.
4. Publishing and sending for review A. When your list is finished, it will need to be published To publish your list: From Edit mode, click the dark grey Publish button at the top right of the screen Or if you have saved the list as a draft, click on Edit and then Publish B.
