INFORMATION SYSTEMS SERVICE NETWORKS AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS SECTOR User Guide: Connecting to the University of Cyprus wireless network ucywifi for Windows XP operating systems ΥΠΣ ΕΔ/55 Last review date: 26/04/2012 General information on the ucywifi wireless network can be found at the end of this guide, Section General Information Step 1: Click on the Start button located on the bottom left side of the taskbar and select Control Panel:
Step 2: From the available options under Control Panel, click to open Network Connections: Step 3: Locate your computer s wireless connection, right click on it and choose Properties from the list that will appear: 2
Step 4: From the new window that will appear, go to the second tab Wireless Networks: Step 5: Ensure that the option Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings is checked and then click on the Add button: 3
Step 6: On the Wireless network properties window that will appear, complete the fields as follows: Network name (SSID): ucywifi Network authentication: WPA2 Data encryption: AES Click on the box next to Connect even if this network in not broadcasting in case it is not enabled (marked with a tick ) Step 7: In the same window, move to the second tab Authentication. Select Protected EAP (PEAP) for the EAP type fields and then click on Properties: 4
Step 8: In the new window Protected EAP Properties that will appear, un-check the Validate server certificate option. Select Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2) for the Authentication Method field and then click on Configure Step 9: The EAP MSCHAPv2 window will now appear. Ensure that the option «Automatically use mu Windows logon name and password (and domain if any) is not checked and then click OK. 5
Step 10: Click OK (you will have to click ΟΚ in three windows in total) in order to close the open windows and to save your changes. Step 11: Click on the Wireless Connection icon located on the right side of your computer s taskbar to show the available wireless networks: Step 12: Select the ucywifi wireless network and then click the Connect button to the bottom right side of the window: 6
Step 13: A new window will appear in which you will be prompted to enter your username (with the suffix @ucy.ac.cy) and password (username/password are those you use for accessing your University email account). The Logon domain should remain empty. Once you fill in the required information, click OK. IMPORTANT: If your email address is of the following format: georghiou.george@ucy.ac.cy, and you have been given an alias email such as ggeorge@ucy.ac.cy for example, then you must use ggeorge@ucy.ac.cy as the username for accessing the service. 7
Step 14: You have successfully connected to ucywifi wireless network. In order to confirm that you are connected to this network and view further details, click on the Wireless Connections icon located on the taskbar. A window resembling the picture below will appear: 8
General Information The ucywifi wireless network access service allows for the establishment of a wireless connection and access to the Internet and is available to all the members of the university community who have been assigned a University of Cyprus unique username (academic and administrative staff, students) The ucywifi wireless network uses the security protocol WPA2 Enterprise / AES, which enables a secure connection and communication. Supported devices on which the service has been tested successfully and the respective user guides can be found at the following page http://www.ucy.ac.cy/goto/iss/en- US/ucywifi.aspx The advanced settings configuration procedure described in the above user guide needs be performed only the first time a connection to the ucywifi is attempted. 9
