WARNING... Not To Be Used f Personnel Protection Never use these products as sensing devices f personnel protection. Doing so could lead to serious injury death. These senss do NOT include the self-checking redundant circuitry necessary to allow their use in personnel safety applications. A sens failure malfunction can cause either an energized de-energized sens output condition. Overview The easy-to-use QC50 series true col sens uses modulated white light with red, green, and blue (R, G, B) electronic filters to scan f the presence of one, two three cols. Its compact size allows it to be mounted almost anywhere. Configuration options include Programming mode f col detection parameters and Setup mode f selecting an adjustable output OFF-delay selecting between two response speeds (some models). Three solid-state outputs may be set individually f col differentiation f col-plus-intensity differentiation (see Sensing Modes below). The sens has two push buttons, Set and Select, plus a 4-digit LED display, an Output LED, and three Output Status LEDs (one f each sensing output), f easy programming and status moniting during operation. Push buttons can be locked out f security (see page 5). Figure 1. Sens features Sens Configuration Outputs The QC50 can be programmed to sense one, two, three cols. Three outputs are available f this purpose. When a programmed col is sensed, the yellow Output ( OUT ) indicat LED and the associated green Output Status LED turn ON, and the respective output conducts. Sensing Modes The Sens functions in one of two sensing modes: Col only (expressed C on the 4-digit display) Col-Plus-Intensity (expressed C_I ). In Col sensing mode, only cols are sensed. This is most useful f sting obvious col differences (f example, red black green). The Col-Plus-Intensity option refines the sens s capabilities to include grayscale as well, broadening the spectrum of cols and shades which the sens can be programmed to detect. This feature allows batch sting identifying within a col family (f example, light blue medium blue dark blue). Tolerance Levels The Sens can be configured f one of 10 levels of tolerance (0 to 9). A higher number (f example 9, expressed tol9 on the 4-digit display) permits the sens to accept a wider range of target conditions, compared with lower tolerance levels. A tolerance level of 0 (expressed tol0 ) causes much me precise discrimination and a narrower range of target conditions. OFF-Delay An output OFF-delay value up to 40 milliseconds may be set (see page 5). This value represents the time interval, following termination of sensing, during which the outputs remain active (see Figure 3). NOTE: The selected delay will apply to all three outputs. Sensing Response Speed The QCX50 models feature two selectable sensing response speeds: Nmal and Fast. At either speed, sensing resolution is improved over that of the QC50 models. The faster the speed, the lower the resolution. Nmal speed is the recommended mode f most applications and provides the best resolution. Nmal speed enables such high-resolution sensing as differentiating between similar shades of beige. Figure 2. A quick sens programming guide Figure 3. 20 ms OFF-delay (d_20): output continues f an interval after sensing stops (applies to all outputs) 2 Banner Engineering Cp. Minneapolis, MN U.S.A.

Sens Programming Programming mode determines the cols the sens will detect f each of the three outputs. Repeat the following steps f each output. Refer to Figure 2 f a quick overview of this process. The procedure is identical f all models. NOTE: The sens has a 12-second time-out. If a period longer than 12 seconds elapses between steps, sens will return to Run mode without saving settings. Procedure LED Display Sample Col Position new col to be sensed within scanning distance, typically 20 mm (0.8"); sens will sample the col to be sensed* Output LED: OFF Output Status LEDs: All OFF Display: run (no OFF-delay) rund (OFF-delay selected) Select Channel Press and hold Set 2 seconds Channel 1 ( SEt1 ) is selected by default Click Select repeatedly until desired channel is displayed Click Set to save selection Output LED: OFF Output Status LEDs: All OFF Display: SEt1 (channel 1) SEt2 (channel 2) SEt3 (channel 3) Sensing Mode Click Select to choose: Col Col + Intensity (Col is the default mode) Click Set to save selection Sens saves col settings** Output LED: OFF Output Status LEDs: All OFF Display: C (Col) C_I (Col + Intensity) Output LED: ON (if saved) Output Status LEDs: Selected channel ON Display: updt (flashing 2 seconds) Tolerance Level Click Select repeatedly until desired tolerance level is displayed; 10 levels available Click Set to save tolerance setting** Output LED: ON Output Status LEDs: Selected channel ON Display: tol0 (most selective) tol1 (tolerance level 1) tol9 (least selective) * If the col being taught is out of the sens s range, a FAIL message will appear in the 4-digit display, followed by a Hi Lo message (indicating too much too little light, respectively). ** Remembering Settings: Save selected sens settings by clicking the Set push button at the end of Programming mode. The settings are saved in the sens s EEPROM memy and the sens remembers the current settings, even after being powered off. Banner Engineering Cp. Minneapolis, MN U.S.A. 3

Indicat Displays To review the sens s settings, press Select f 2 seconds me. The output channel, sensing mode, and tolerance level will then be displayed sequentially (see Figure 4), followed by the delay interval (applicable to all channels) and nmal fast mode (f QCX50 models). At the end of the sequence, the display will indicate run rund (depending on the delay setting). Non-Initialization Display Messages When using a sens f the first time, the message E2Pr may be displayed (see Figure 5). This indicates the memy has yet to be used. To crect this situation, set up a channel accding to the procedure described earlier in Programming Mode. When any channel is set up successfully, a run rund message is displayed. Run Mode Nmal sens operation is called Run mode. The LED indicats and the 4-digit display indicate current operating status. F example, if the col sens is detecting the col f which output 1 is programmed and no delay is selected, the indicats will appear: Output ( Out ) LED: ON Yellow Output 1 Status LED: ON Green 4-digit display: run Fast Mode When a QCX50 model sens is operating in Fast mode, the display will flash FASt f approximately 5 seconds of every 40 seconds. } Figure 4. Sequential display of setting Application Notes Using the Gating Function The output function of the sens s col detection can be gated using the sens s red wire (see hookups, page 7). Using this function controls the sens s output and permits output to occur only when signaled by the use of the red wire. This output control feature is most useful when multiple repeats of a col could occur, such as with registration marks in a margin, yet only one point on the wk is needed f an accurate determination. Gating is also known as triggering, windowing, inhibiting, synchronization. In the sens s nmal operating state (output enabled, red wire open low), the sens responds to all taught cols (the Output LED, Channel Status LEDs, and all outputs respond to target conditions). When the red wire is held high (output disabled, red wire at high supply potential), the sens does not respond to the taught cols (LEDs do not light and outputs do not conduct; i.e., inhibit). Push Button Disable It is possible to lock out the push buttons to prevent accidental unauthized adjustments on the production flo. See page 5 f the procedure. 4 Banner Engineering Cp. Installing the Col Sens NOTE: When sensing glossy surfaces, install the sens at approximately a 15 angle with respect to the target. See Figure 5. 1. Determine the best position f the swivel connect (back, side, bottom of the sens). 2. Measure the appropriate operating distance from the front surface of the sens optics to the point where the sens is to be fastened. Typically, the ideal distance is 20 mm (0.8"). 3. Fasten the sens to its intended location using two screws (M4x35 longer). Any two of three holes in the housing may be used f this purpose. 4. Attach the power cable to the sens s connect; see hookups on page 7. NOTE: When the sens is ON, the white emitter beam is ON and a message ( run rund ) appears on the 4-digit status display.
