This Quick Start Guide covers the basics for initial setup and usage of your SuperNova. For complete instructions on all features and functionality, refer to the device User Guide (preloaded in the device) after you have completed the device setup process. To open the User Guide, tap on the User Guide cover on the Home screen (in the My Books widget), or tap the Barnes & Noble application icon tap on the User Guide cover in My Library. Unlocking the Screen To unlock the screen after sleep mode, finger-slide the Unlock bar towards the Sound bar. To extend or reduce the delay for sleep mode, at the bottom of the Home screen, tap Display Screen timeout. Touch-Screen Navigation The touch-screen allows for quick, easy and convenient navigation for all applications using the following navigation methods: Tap = simple touch and release of your finger. Press-hold & scroll = press your finger on the screen, hold in place and then slide up or down to scroll the screen (i.e., scrolling on B&N Bookstore and web pages). Finger-slide = touch & slide your finger across the screen and release (i.e., turning pages in a book). Touch & hold = touch your finger and hold in place until a response by the application. Touch & drag = touch & hold an item, and without lifting your finger, move your finger on the screen until you reach the target position. Pinch-Screen Zoom This device supports the pinch-screen zoom feature to zoom in and out on application screens. Zoom in: Spread finger and thumb, place on screen and pinch together. Zoom out: Place finger and thumb together on screen and slide apart. Not all applications support the Pinch-Screen zoom feature. 3
Navigation Buttons The navigation buttons at the bottom of the device can be used as follows: HOME ~ Return to the Home screen from any application (leaves apps running in background). ~ Press and hold to display the most recent apps you launched; tap on an app icon to re-launch. MENU BACK SEARCH ~ Display the Home screen Function Menu. ~ Display individual application Menu options. ~ In applications, return to previous screens or EXIT the application. ~ Clear pop-up menus. ~ In the Reader, turns pages back. ~ Perform quick Web, Apps and Music searches. ~ In the Reader, turns pages forward. Getting Started 1 Charge the device Plug the power adapter into an electrical wall outlet, and then connect to the device to fully charge the battery before use (approx. 5 hours). You can use the device s full functionality if the battery is charging via the power adapter. Power adapter Wall outlet Device top 4
You can also charge the battery using the USB cable connected to a powered-on computer or a USB power adapter when the device is off or in sleep mode. If you want to charge the device via USB cable while using the device (i.e., ereader in night-read mode) you must reduce the screen brightness to near the lowest level or the device will not charge. For more information, refer to the User Guide. USB Power adapter Computer (powered on) USB cable Wall outlet Device top If the LED blinks while the device is connected via USB cable, you can either increase the screen brightness to begin discharging the battery (LED goes off) or reduce the screen brightness to start charging the battery (LED becomes steady green). IMPORTANT: When charging with the USB cable, the required charge time is longer than when using the AC adapter. 2 Turn the Device On 1. Press & hold the power button until the Pandigital logo appears. If you are charging the device, the Pandigital logo appears after the battery icon appears. 2. During the boot up process, the Pandigital logo is displayed a second time, followed by the Pandigital splash screen, and then upon completion the setup wizard Welcome screen is displayed. 5
3 Initial Setup To set up your device and register accounts, follow the setup wizard prompts as they appear on the screen. Select your Desired Language Accept End User License Agreement You must accept the Agreement to proceed with the setup. Set Up Your Wi-Fi Network IMPORTANT: If you skip the Wi-Fi setup, the setup wizard automatically skips the steps for setting up your Gmail and Barnes & Noble accounts. Refer to the User Guide for instructions on setting this up later. Tap Wi-Fi. When the check mark turns green, a list of local Wi-Fi networks is displayed. Select your network and enter the password. When the device connects to the network, a Connected to... message is displayed under Wi-Fi. If you are connecting via a public Wi-Fi hotspot, you may be prompted to enter the hotspot login information prior to having an active internet connection. Identify your News Preference This determines the default RSS news feed that will be displayed in the InTouch application. Set up Gmail and Barnes & Noble Accounts This will not appear in the setup wizard if you did not set up your Wi-Fi network. If you enter an incorrect Gmail account or password, a Network Connection Timeout error message is displayed. To access your Gmail via the Email application, you must also set up the account in that app. Refer to the Email section of the User Guide. 6
Identify Your Location You must select a location before you can proceed; this data is used by applications that display information based on a specific geographic location. Setup Complete Tap Start to display the Home screen and begin using your device. 4 Set Date & Time IMPORTANT: Many applications require the Date and Time to be set correctly according to your geographic location in order to connect with your accounts or display correct data. 1. On the Home screen, tap the Settings icon Date & time. 2. Set the time zone, date and time according to your location. 3. Press to return to the Home screen. 7
Home Screen Tap on any application icon or widget to launch it. Touch, hold and slide icons or widgets to reposition them on the screen. Touch, hold and slide icons onto to remove them from the Home screen. Press and hold to display the most recent apps you launched, then simply tap on an application icon to re-launch. Notification icons (i.e., Email, downloads, etc.). Finger-slide down on the notification to view the details, then tap on a detail listing to access corresponding application. Wi-Fi connection status Battery charge level status Indicates Alarms are activated Current Date and Time Widgets (i.e., Search) and Shortcuts can be added to the Home screen. The My Books widget shows the most recently read books, magazine and newspaper. Simply tap on a cover to open the media file again. The My Wi-Fi widget allows quick access to setting up and connecting to a local Wi-Fi network. After successful connection, simply tap the globe icon to launch the browser. 8
Dots on left and right side of screen indicate the visible space of the 5 available screens. Tap the left or right dots (or finger-slide the screen) to display other screens. Touch & hold to pop up thumbnails of all 5 screens; tap on a screen to display it. Settings quick launch icon. Applications screen quick launch icon. Touch & hold on the icon to pop up thumbnails of all 5 screens. Tap on a screen to display it. Browser quick launch icon. Home Screen Function Menu On the Home screen, press to display Function Menu. Add Add Shortcuts, Widgets and Folders on your Home screen. If the Add option is not available, the visible screen space is full. You won t be able to add shortcuts, widgets or folders until you either delete items to free up screen space or slide the screen left or right to display extended screen space. Wallpaper Assign a different photo as your background image. Manage Apps View app properties and uninstall your apps. Search Perform quick Web, Apps and Music searches. Notifications List of pending notifications (i.e., new email, events, completed downloads, etc.). Settings Set multiple functions and personal preferences that affect the usage of the device. 9
Applications Screen Your Pandigital SuperNova includes many preloaded apps (listed below). As you download more Android TM apps, they can also be accessed on the Applications screen. On the Home screen, tap to display the Applications screen. Barnes & Noble ~ Shop on the Barnes & Noble Bookstore, download purchased media, and access My Library. Browser ~ Access the Internet and surf the web. Calculator ~ Perform basic math equations. Calendar ~ View calendar and schedule events. Camera ~ Use the built-in cameras for video conferencing, taking pictures, and recording videos. Clock ~ Display a digital clock and schedule alarms. Contacts ~ Create a list of personal contacts, which can be linked to your email. Dictionary ~ Quick access to the built-in dictionary. Downloads ~ View history of items you ve downloaded from websites. You can also open and delete downloads Email ~ Send/Receive email using your existing email addresses. ES File Explorer ~ View and manage files and apps, backup files to your microsd TM card, and install third party Android TM apps. 10
Facebook ~ Quick access to the Facebook website. Firmware Update ~ Update the device Firmware. Gallery ~ View and manage photo and video files. GetJar ~ Market offering thousands of FREE third party Android TM applications. InTouch ~ Quick connect to view your Facebook, Twitter, Gmail and RSS news feed data all in one easy place. Music ~ Play and manage audio files. Notes ~ Convenient and quick way to write yourself notes. OfficeSuite Viewer ~ Open and view files of the following formats: DOC, DOCX, TXT, XLS, XLSX, CSV, PPT, PPTX, PPS, PPSX and PDF Search ~ Perform quick Web, Apps and Music searches. Settings ~ Personalize and enhance the device as desired. Speech Recorder ~ Create a WAV file by recording your voice or other sounds using the built-in microphone U Player ~ View popular YouTube videos, and play a variety of other popular video formats. Weather ~ Check the weather forecasts for multiple locations of your choice. 11
Barnes & Noble Use the Barnes & Noble application to: Shop on the Barnes & Noble online store Buy and download Books Buy single issues or subscriptions to Newspapers and Magazines Buy, download and read Digital Replica Plus (DRP) magazines Get free and Sample Books Support Books copied from SD cards and from your computer Support Adobe ebooks transferred from Adobe Digital Edition (ADE) DRM-free Books downloaded from web browser Manage and read Books Overview of Buying & Downloading Barnes & Noble Media On the Home screen, tap the Barnes & Noble application icon. If you don t have an existing Barnes & Noble account, create and register with a valid credit card. Tap the B&N Bookstore tab. The first time, you are prompted for your Barnes & Noble login info if you did not enter it during the initial device setup. After a successful login, the Barnes & Noble Top 100 Books are displayed. To view the Newspapers and Magazines, tap Favorites: Favorites. Select your desired category. Shop and purchase Books, Newspapers and Magazines, or get Free Samples. To scroll the store listings, press-hold & scroll the screen. After a successful sync with your account, your media is added to your B&N Library. Tap a title s Download button to download to My Library (SD card is required to download DRP magazines). In My Library, tap on a title cover to open it. 12
Reader Use the Reader to display your ebooks and magazines. 1. Tap the Barnes & Noble application icon. 2. In My Library, tap on a media listing to open it in the Reader. Finger-slide or tap on either side of the screen within 200 pixels to turn pages. You can also press and to turn pages. Touch & slide the dot on the progress bar at the bottom of the screen to jump to other pages. Refer to the User Guide for complete B&N application instructions. 13
