Defining the Environment Variables The following environment variables are used to point to files that TDP for Informix uses: DSMI_CONFIG The fully qualified name for the client user option file (dsm.opt). DSMI_DIR Points to the Tivoli Storage Manager API installed path. This environment variable needs to be defined only if the Tivoli Storage Manager API is installed under a different path from the default path. DSMI_INF_DIR Points to the Tivoli Storage Manager for Informix install path. This environment variable needs to be defined only if the Tivoli Storage Manager for Informix is installed under a different path from the default path. DSMI_LOG Points to the directory that contains the API error log file (dsierror.log) file. For the error log file, create a directory for the error log to be created in, then let the DSMI_LOG environment variable point to that directory. The following example shows how to set up these environment variables for Solaris: export DSMI_DIR=/opt/tivoli/tsm/client/api/bin export DSMI_LOG=/home/user_a/logdir export DSMI_INF_DIR=/opt/tivoli/tsm/client/informix/bin export DSMI_CONFIG=/opt/tivoli/tsm/client/api/bin/dsm.opt The following example shows how to set up these environment variables for AIX: export DSMI_DIR=/usr/tivoli/tsm/client/api/bin export DSMI_LOG=/home/user_a/logdir export DSMI_INF_DIR=/usr/tivoli/tsm/client/informix/bin export DSMI_CONFIG=/usr/tivoli/tsm/client/api/bin/dsm.opt You can add these environment variable statements to the user s.profile file. 6 Tivoli Data Protection for Informix: Installation and User s Guide

Editing the Client Options Files TDP for Informix and the Tivoli Storage Manager Server communicate using the Tivoli Storage Manager API. The communications protocol and option parameters are specified in the dsm.opt and dsm.sys options files. For additional information on specifying the communication method, see Installing the Clients. During the initial installation and set up of Tivoli Storage Manager on your workstation, you are provided with a sample client system options file that is called dsm.sys.smp. The dsm.sys.smp file contains just the communication options, and a sample include-exclude list. These basic options are the ones you need to get started quickly. Tivoli Storage Manager also provides a sample client user options file (dsm.opt.smp) to help you get started quickly. The client system options file resides in your Tivoli Storage Manager API installation directory. The sample options files that are distributed with the Tivoli Storage Manager API can be used for TDP for Informix. Editing the Client System Options File Tivoli Storage Manager uses the following options in the client system options file (dsm.sys): v SERVERNAME option (to identify the Tivoli Storage Manager server) v COMMMETHOD option (to identify the communication method) v PASSWORDACCESS option (specify GENERATE to automatically generate the TSM password) For other options you can specify in dsm.sys, see Tivoli Storage Manager Installing the Clients. The root user should edit the dsm.sys file. It must refer to the correct Tivoli Storage Manager server and communication method. Chapter 2. Installing TDP for Informix on UNIX 7

Assigning a Management Class for a Backup When you back up a database, the default management class for your node is used. You can override the default value with a different value that is specified in the include option. This option is placed in the include-exclude options file. The file name of the include-exclude options file is placed in the client system s options file. For more information, see Installing the Clients. There are object naming conventions for the ON-Bar files. For a database backup, use the following naming convention: /dbservername/dbservername/dbspacename/level For a log backup, use the following naming convention: /dbservername/dbservername/server_number/unique_logid For a database back up, an example of the include statement is as follows: Include /dbservera/dbservera/dbspacea/* InformixDbMgmt For a logical log back up, an example of the include statement is as follows: Include /dbservera/dbservera/55/* InformixLogMgmt 8 Tivoli Data Protection for Informix: Installation and User s Guide

Registering TDP for Informix with the Tivoli Storage Manager Server Before backing up to and recovering from a Tivoli Storage Manager Server, you must have a Tivoli Storage Manager registered node name and a password. The process of setting up a node name and password is called registration. Once the TDP for Informix node is registered with a Tivoli Storage Manager Server, you can begin using the TDP for Informix to back up and restore your Informix databases and logical logs. If your workstation has a node name assigned to the Tivoli Storage Manager backup-archive client, we recommend that you use a different node name for TDP for Informix. For information about performing the registration process, see Installing the Clients. Initializing the Password Note: The root user must run the tdpipswd program before using TDP for Informix. Follow the steps below to initialize the password: 1. Start the tdpipswd program. This program is located in the directory pointed to by the DSMI_INF_DIR environment variable. This program sets up a connection with the server that you specified in the dsm.opt file. Chapter 3. Configuring TDP for Informix This section steps you through the setup of TDP for Informix. Some steps require that you, as the Informix database administrator, and the Tivoli Storage Manager administrator exchange information. The steps are: v Step 1 Edit the configuration file v Step 2 Ensure ON-Bar compatibility Step 1: Editing the Configuration File For Informix IDS 7 After the Informix ON-Bar product is installed, you need to edit the Informix configuration file. A sample configuration file is shipped on the Informix CD-ROM named onconfig.std. The Informix file (onconfig.std) is located in directory $informixdir/etc. Copy onconfig.std to onconfig. Edit the onconfig file. This step is required only if you are using Informix IDS 7. The onconfig file contains a parameter BAR_BSALIB_PATH which sets the value for the TDP for Informix library. The parameter should be set as follows: BAR_BSALIB_PATH=/usr/tivoli/tsm/client/informix/bin/bsashr10.o (for AIX) BAR_BSALIB_PATH=/opt/tivoli/tsm/client/informix/bin/libTDPinf.so (for Solaris) Step 2: Ensuring ON-Bar Compatibility After installing ON-Bar, make sure that it is compatible with the current version of the Tivoli Storage Manager client. Copy sm_versions.std to sm_versions. Edit the sm_versions file before running oninit. Follow these steps: 1. Edit the file $INFORMIXDIR/etc/sm_versions. 2. Create a line for the current Tivoli Storage Manager level: 1 3.7.0 adsm 3 The fields in this line are: 1 Always use 1. 3.7.0 Tivoli Storage Manager version.release.level adsm Name used to identify TSM for On-Bar. 3 Tivoli Storage Manager version If the current Tivoli Storage Manager version is not in this table, you will get an error about an incompatible version. Copyright IBM Corp. 1999 11
