Our team s goal is to create a mechanical device and application for tablets to magnify and display text for visually impaired students that is both compact and cost effective. Objectives To improve the quality of life of visually impaired students To remove the hindrances of bulky, expensive magnification equipment To bridge the gap in opportunities between visually capable and visually impaired students To facilitate access to information written in small fonts such as in textbooks and novels for visually impaired students User Needs Application User Needs 30X Optical Zoom Zoom Control Color Options Battery Life Image Capturing Split-Screen Capability Intuitive User Interface Mechanical User Needs Cost: $1,095.00 Cost: $3,000.00 5 lbs Portability Luggability Direction Control $750 - $1000 Multiple Viewpoints Lighting Cost

Data collection & analysis Participants Comments Participants Pros Cons Participant1 XY table moves smoothly App interface is very simple & nice. App buttons should be marked which one has what function. App buttons should be brighter & bigger. Participant2 The colors of the icons in the app are clear The zooming button helps a lot The XY table is resistant towards moving to right Not too much delicate, sturdy looking, The icons are not very clear/ they also need to be bigger The white space when the page is split in two is too much. Instead the images should be bigger Participant3 The fonts are good Changing the colors on the app is easy The orange button symbol seems like a refreshing, or a back button. The icons are hard to read, too small When the page is split the images should be bigger Participant4 The XY table is easy to move Bigger icons would be much better The images in the split screen are small The XY table is not easy to write on, If the XY table was kept still at one point that would avoid any unwanted movements A small storage place for a pen or highlighter etc Participan5 No comments Not comfortable looking at led screem for a long time. The charger lime of ipad is bothering.

T Report & Suggestions

Suggestions 1. Buttons in ipad are so flat. It might be hard for them to find and remember which button goes where, because visually impaired people tend to rely on other senses beside eyes. Use sound or size of button for them. 2. Make a place for the charger in case charging was needed. Currently the wire seems to be in the way.

Suggestions 3. Make the screen bigger while having the split page.. The buttons on the app are small, and the symbols are sometimes hard to recognize for the users. According to Ms. Starrfield it s completely inaccessible. Making them bigger, would be a huge help. 4. Make a small storage place so that you can store a pen or a pencil,

Suggestions 5. Using ipad for a long time might have a bad effect on even people who don t have the visual impairment. If there was a way that could make it possible for the potential user to switch to something else (even for a short time) it would make it a lot easier to work with and much more efficient. 6. If the XY table had a stop, it would be much better and easier to work with. Currently it s not easy to write on, and also it s very easy to move in case of an unwanted hand touch.

T Thank you
