VERTICAL A MOBILE APP FOR VERTICAL VIDEO EDITING GENERAL ASSEMBLY SFUXD 61_TESS HANNEL

LET S BE REAL. You. Love. Videos. Of course you do! They re delightful, entertaining, and a great way to make fun of your friends.

Eternal love and happiness You Video content

But also...

Smartphone users hold their phones vertically about 94% of the time. Medium Rather than looking upon vertical video as a negative, social networks are embracing the format. Medium The future of video, it turns out, just may be vertical. The New York Times

RESEARCH GOALS 1 2 3 How much video content are people watching and sharing on mobile? How do people watch and share video content on mobile? What s frustrating about watching and sharing video content on mobile?

USER INTERVIEWS I m constantly watching videos on my phone on Tumblr, Instagram, and YouTube. For some reason I m never able to trim in editing apps. I d like to be able to select a very specific part of a video. I don t have Instagram, but use videos/photos on social media to promote my personal film work. Conley,28 Cole,25 I HATE turning my phone sideways to watch videos. I d rather die. Jim,26 I rarely watch videos over 1 minute long. Jim,26 Amasha,20 I mainly use video for humor and to connect with friends. PJ,26

USER INTERVIEWS I watch video content on my phone! I like making videos, but I don t have a lot of time. I haven t found an editing app I like enough to use consistently.

PROBLEM STATEMENT People need a way to easily edit and view videos on their phone, because that is where they watch the majority of video content.

HYPOTHESIS I believe that if tech-conscious groups and creative professionals have a way to easily edit video on mobile, they will create more engaging content that audiences (and friends!) want to watch.

PERSONA 1: GEORGE MICHAEL Sometimes it feels like my whole job is just posting Instagrams. I want more time to think about strategy! Age 26 Occupation Social Media Manager Income $70,000 Residence San Francisco Education College Grad George Michael works at a small ad agency as a social media manager. He enjoys his job because the small company size allows him to be creative and take a lot of control over his projects. However, he doesn t have a technical background in editing or design and finds the creation of social assets for his company and his clients time consuming. The agency provides top-of-the-line phones and computers, but his issue is understanding and using the tools at his disposal. User Goals Save time while editing Create engaging content Pain Points Doesn t consider himself an editor No technical background Overloaded at work

PERSONA 2: LULU I m like totally into this trip to Death Valley because my girlfriend @boobabe did it and it s like actually soooo beautiful and if I wear white I ll be channeling some major Solange visual album vibes which is really what I m going for in 2018 you know? Age 21 Occupation Content Creator Income $90,000 Residence Los Angeles Education College Grad Lulu aka @lululady aka Louise aka Lu works a part time job as a hostess, but is trying to make it in the world of branded content. She has hundreds of thousands of followers on multiple social media platforms and her numbers just keep growing, partially due to the barrage of content she feeds them every day. She s a young and savvy tech user who understands that constant, high quality content is the key to success in her industry. User Goals High quality video content High volume of content Pain Points Short on time Always on her phone, almost never desktop

NAME PLATFORM Website Mobile app UI/EASE OF USE DESIGN/BRANDING Easy to use and fairly intuitive. Benefits from using a lot features users knew from Snapchat. Retro gradient with black and white text let s the content do most of the talking. Gallery visuals work well to pack a lot of options/content in. Script wordmark and retro gradient color feel fun, young, and artistic. EASE OF CONNECTING WITH OTHER USERS Easy and addicting. Large user base already exists. EASE OF MAINTAINING A RELATIONSHIP PRICING STRUCTURE Easy. Free service with lots of existing users and incentive to revisit the app to communicate and share with friends. Free Other users are your contacts. Easy to share through text or email with export button. Not sure if group message is possible. Easy enough, free service. Feels isolated. I would visit the app with the intent of creating a video, no browsing option like Instagram. Free Can create a profile and share / save GIFs. Easy. Free service. Offers extensions like GIPHY keyboard and GIFCam. Free Newer features like direct messages groups makes communication even easier. Stories is just one element of the larger app. Fairly intuitive. Mobile app More editing options than Insta. Not sure if you are able to record vertical video could be fixed frame. Feels like an Apple product, black backdrop with simple white iconography for tools. Feels more mature than Instagram. Less sticker/gif options than Insta and updated less often. Website Mobile app Easy to use. Huge amount of content to search through. Neon and retro with black backdrop. A bit like Clips meets Instagram. Youthful, modern, and of the internet.

PROJECT BRIEF Objective Vertical is a mobile video application designed to allow users to create short, engaging content, grounded in the reality of our short attention spans and voracious appetite for content.
