Start > Settings > Ease of access > Magnifier Colour filters If you have difficulty seeing red, green, blue/yellow light, you can turn on colour filters, and set the display to one of the following options: Greyscale (no colours) Invert colours Greyscale inverted (no colours) Deuteranopia (sensitive to green light) Protanopia (sensitive to red light) Tritanopia (sensitive to blue/yellow light) To change this setting: Start > Settings > Ease of access > Colour & high contrast > Colour filters Eye control If you have difficulty using your hands to control a mouse or use the touch screen, you use your eyes to operate an on-screen mouse, keyboard, and text-to-speech. This feature requires a compatible eye tracker device such as the Tobii Eye Tracker 4C, Tobii Dynavox PCEye Mini, PCEyePlus, EyeMobile Plus, and I-series.) If you are interested in this feature, you need to follow the instructions on this site: https://blogs.windows.com/windowsexperience/2017/08/02/announcing-windows-10-insiderpreview-build-16257-pc-build-15237-mobile/#bv0zwjxa8ytgylr5.97

Security protections There are new protections in Windows Defender to help safeguard against malicious apps and threats, particularly ransomware. The two major features are Controlled folder access and Exploit protection. These two new features, along with other security features of Windows 10 makes most 3 rd party security apps redundant. Controlled folder access This powerful security feature is off by default. You can choose to turn on or off at anytime. Turning it on helps protect for personal files from rogue ransomware and other malware that seeks to damage your files. This feature may not be available if you use a 3rd party antivirus. Controlled Folder Access is off by default. If you decide to turn it on, you may find that some of your Desktop apps, including apps recommended by EuroSCUG such as KeePass, Photofiltre, Picasa, GIMP, SyncToy, are blocked from saving files. If this occurs, you need to allow them access. Allowing access requires that you can locate the exe file for the app. If you are unsure about how to do that, seek assistance at our meeting or your Local Area Group. Click here to view a document on our web site that explains how to change the settings in Controlled folder access, to allow your trusted apps access. Exploit protection Exploit Protection is now an integral part of Windows 10. It will operate whether Windows Defender or a 3rd party antivirus is used. It detects exploits using behavioural techniques. You can access some Exploit protection settings in the Windows Defender Security Centre, however, the settings are complex and it is best to leave them at the default settings. You would only change these settings if you were having conflicting issues with a 3 rd party security application; but in that case it may be better to disable exploit protection in your 3 rd party app. To access the Exploit protection settings, click the Defender icon (bottom right of the screen, may be in Hidden icons), alternatively Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Defender > Open Windows Defender Security Centre. Then click on App & browser control and scroll to the bottom of the screen to find Exploit Protection. Click on Exploit Protection settings. OneDrive Files on-demand If you use OneDrive, this version has a new feature called Files On-Demand. If Files on-demand is turned on: You can see a list of all your files in File Explorer and get new information about each file, but some files will not be stored locally New files created online or on another device appear as online-only files, which don t take up space on your device When connected to the Internet, you can use the files like every other file on your device. When you view the files in OneDrive in File Explorer, a little status icon indicates whether the file is stored locally, or in the cloud. The problem with this feature is that you may not be able to access some of your files off-line (i.e. if not connected to the internet). If you do not want this feature, make sure it is turned off. Click here to display a document from Microsoft that explains the new OneDrive feature in detail; and how to access and modify various settings.

Microsoft Edge Browser Edge browser has quite a few improvements. Browse full screen To see a web page full screen, go > Zoom then click the double-ended arrow To revert to normal screen, bounce the mouse of the top right of the screen and click on the inward pointing arrows. Pin your favourite websites to the taskbar (or the Start menu) You can place an icon on the Taskbar that will directly open a commonly used web site. Go > Pin this page to the taskbar Drag a site to Favourites bar The Favourites bar is at the top of Edge is very useful for getting to commonly used web sites. If you don t see it, you can turn it on - > Settings > turn on Show the Favourites bar. To quickly add a site to the Favourites bar, click on the web site id icon next the the web site address and drag it down to the Favourites bar. In this example we will add Google Maps to the bar. From now on, Google maps can be accessed by clicking on the icon on the Favourites bar

Microsoft Edge Browser (continued) Save new Favourites in a folder tree You can now view your new Favourites as a folder tree, and collapse or expand folders from within the Add to favourites option. Just click the Save in and navigate the folder list where you want the Favourite saved, or create a new folder. To add our Google Maps page to a new folder called Maps : Click on the Add favourites star, the open the Save in box If you want to add the new folder to the top level, select Favourites, otherwise select the folder where you want the new folder added - in this case we want a new top-level folder. Click Create new folder.

Type in the folder name and hit the Enter button Then click Add to add the current page to your new Favourites folder Edit URL for Favourites You can now edit the URL of any favourite in the Favourites menu or the Favourites Bar. You can use this to update the location of a site that has moved, or to create Bookmarklets in the favourites bar. To change the URL, right click on an entry in either the Favourites bar or the Favourites menu and choose Edit URL. [Note: at the time of writing, the preview version of the Fall update will only show the option for entries on the Favourites bar]

Microsoft Edge Browser (continued) Translation extension You can enhance Edge with extensions that are available from the Microsoft Store. To get this extension, go > Extensions Then click Get extensions from the Store This will open the Store The Store app will open - locate Translator for Microsoft Edge in the Store, click on it and install it.

When the extension is installed you will have a new icon top right in Edge, Now open a web site in a foreign language, for example: http://www.bosch-presse.de/pressportal/de/de/contact.html To convert it to English (or any other language, click the Translate icon and chose the From and To languages (it should correctly guess the From), then click Translate this page The page then appears in English Of course, you can convert a page from English to some other language as well.

Microsoft Edge Browser (continued) Read aloud Edge can now read web pages and PDF files to you with a new feature called Read aloud. You can choose from a selection of voices, and the speed of the voice. You can skip forward/back and pause. With web sites, you can highlight where you want the reading to start. With PDF files it will start at the beginning of the PDF. Example, open the EuroSCUG web site and select some text starting at Looking Go > Read aloud It may take a few seconds to get going. A tool bar will appear which contains skip forward/backward, Pause, and a voice control. You can also close the Read aloud toolbar to stop reading. Now click on the voice control.

With the voice control open you can choose the speed and select the voice you prefer. PDF improvements New Rotation and Layout options Clicking on a PDF opens the PDF Tool bar that now includes tools to rotate the PDF and display 1 or 2 pages, and display Table of Contents of the PDF. Fill in fillable forms directly within Edge You can now fill in fillable PDF forms directly in Edge, then save the edited form, for example this membership form: https://www.governanceinstitute.com.au/media/881782/gov-inst_appforassociate_fellow_membership_fields_apr_2017.pdf However it does not fill in forms containing fields with boxed characters correctly, such as: https://solutions.auspost.com.au/mrsocoan/formgeneration/holdmail Make notes directly on PDFs You can now make notes directly on PDFs using Web notes, and save the PDFs.

Microsoft Edge Browser (continued) Import Cookies and Settings from Chrome to Microsoft Edge This option makes it easier for you to move to Microsoft Edge as your primary browser. To do this, go > Settings > Import from another browser, select Chrome and follow the prompts. More EPUB improvements Copy and Ask Cortana: Now, when you select your text, you can Copy and Ask Cortana in addition to adding notes, highlighting and underlining. Cortana can help you do a little research while you are reading an EPUB book Ink Notes: Add a note and write or draw on it with your pen. Reset/Repair Edge If Edge is not operating correctly, you can now repair it or reset it. To do this (in Windows, not Edge) - Start > Settings > Apps Scroll down to Microsoft Edge, click on it and choose Advanced. There you will see the two options.

Windows Update Pause all updates for 7 days This useful option will prevent Windows update from installing updates for 7 days, for example if you are away from home for a while. Note that it is important that Windows security updates are not delayed, if possible. Settings > Update & security > Windows Update > Advanced options Delivery Optimization settings As we have advised before, Windows update will use YOUR internet data allocation to upload Windows updates (i.e. that have already been downloaded on your computer) to other computers on the internet. As before, you can change these settings: Settings > Update & security > Windows Update > Advanced options > Delivery optimization > Allow downloads from other PCs Note although the setting mentions only downloads, if you read the small print, it also allows uploads. Now there are additional settings associated with Windows update that you can change to your liking, for example, to reduce the bandwidth (i.e. percentage of your internet speed) consumed by Windows Update: Settings > Update & security > Windows Update > Advanced options > Delivery optimization > Advanced options. There is also a Windows update activity monitor where you can view the internet usage by Windows Update: Settings > Update & security > Windows Update > Advanced options > Delivery optimization > Activity monitor. (The data reflects the amount used since the first day of the month)
