NiceLabel PowerForms Desktop Multiuser 6.x Installation The Multiuser installation consists of two parts: the server and the workstation part. First, you need to install the server part of NiceLabel software and make all files accessible to the clients. Then you can install the workstation part of NiceLabel software on individual workstations (clients). The server part of the installation is installed on a computer that has the role of a file server. Server computer can be any computer in the group. Server part of the installation is a bunch of files which are merely shared for the clients. Important! The folder where the server part is installed must be shared to the clients. The share mode for all files can be set to read-only mode, with the exception of one folder. The System folder must be shared in full mode (read-write, delete) to the client computers. Every client must be able to update the files contained in the System folder. The client part of the installation can be performed from the server or from the product CD. The server and the client must be accessible in the same LAN (Local Area Network). The Multiuser edition is not designed to run if the server and client are connected over WAN, internet or similar long-distance connection. A common issue that may surface is client licensing crashes when the long-distance connections interrupts briefly. While some practical applications of the Multiuser edition over WAN exist, and the recent development of high-speed internet links is making them more viable, this is not an officially supported functionality. In more demanding environments we recommend using NiceLabel Control Center edition. Define Access Rights for Network Clients Administrator rights to the local computer at the install time Read-write access to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE key at install time, read-only access at the run time The user that is installing the labeling software on the client computer must have Administrator rights or be a member of the Administrator group. It is vital to have Administrator rights to be able to update labeling software related information in the registry. Windows Registry is used to store information about the software installation, file folders and to register the labeling software components and modules. Read- 2

write access is required at install time. Read-only access is required at any other time when the software is run. Read-write access to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE key Read-write access to the System folder in the server installation of the labeling software Access to the printer drivers User-specific software settings are stored within this registry key. Every user that logs on the computer has unique settings. The user must be able to update his information. The server edition is installed on a computer that has the role of a file server. No labeling software is running on this server computer, the files are merely shared for the clients. The folder where the server is installed must be shared to the clients. The share mode for all files can be set to read-only mode, with the exception of one folder. The System folder must be shared in full mode (read-write, delete) to the client computers. Every client must be able to update the files contained in the System folder. The user has to be able to access printer drivers in order to use them for label printing. It depends on the Windows system that is used, but Print and Read permissions should be sufficient. Installation of NiceLabel PowerForms Desktop Multiuser 6.x - Server component Follow these steps to install the labeling software on the server computer: 1. Make sure that you have full access rights to the folder on your server, where you wish to install the labeling software. 2. Put the product CD in your CD-ROM drive. An installation window will open automatically. Note: If the Installation Wizard does not start automatically, go to the main CD directory of your product CD and double-click on the file START.EXE. 3. Click on Install. A new window will open showing all software editions. 4. Click on Install NiceLabel products. 5. Click on Install NiceLabel PowerForms Desktop Multi-user. 6. Follow the installation prompts. 7. When prompted to Select Server Location, type in the network location where you will install the server component of NiceLabel PowerForms Desktop Multiuser edition and click on Next. Note: Make sure to use UNC syntax when referring to the network location. Use the syntax \\server\share and NOT the syntax for mapped drives such as W:\share. 8. You may enter the location of a secondary server that will take over when the primary server fails. If you have a computer to act as a secondary license server, enter the UNC path of the appropriate folder. 3

Note: If unsure, leave the edit field empty. The secondary server is optional. 9. You can create an MSI installation file if you wish to automatically deploy the client software on workstations using the Active Directory group policy. You can use the MSI file for silent and unattended installations of software. Note: If unsure, skip this optional step. 10. Click on the Next button to finish the installation. Note: You should select a server and disk share that is visible to all workstations in the domain where you intend to use the software. 4

5

Installation of NiceLabel PowerForms Desktop Multiuser 6.x - Client component There are two ways to install NiceLabel PowerForms Desktop Multiuser Client on the workstation: Installing the client from the network - recommended Install the software client by running the installation file NiceLabelDesignerProPowerForms6.exe from the NiceLabel server computer. If the server part has been activated already then the activation is performed automatically. Installing the client from CD Install NiceLabel PowerForms Desktop single user software from the product CD as described in the chapter Installing Software. In this case the activation of the client must be done manually. Follow these steps to install the client from the network: 1. Open Windows Explorer. 2. Browse to the labeling software server computer in My Network Places. 3. Browse to the folder where the labeling software is installed on the server. 4. Double click on the file NiceLabelDesignerProPowerForms6.exe. 5. Follow on-screen instructions. Make sure to install NiceLabel PowerForms edition, not NiceLabel Designer Pro. For detailed instructions, refer to the installation of the single user edition in the chapter Installing Software. Click on the Finish button to complete the installation. 9

Activation You can activate NiceLabel PowerForms Desktop Multiuser edition with a 25-digit software key. The multiuser edition does not provide the activation option with a parallel or USB hardware key. Before you start the activation process of NiceLabel, get familiar with the following terminology: Key number: The 25-character sequence key provided with NiceLabel. Registration number: Unique number generated during the activation process. The registration number validates the entered software key. Activation code: Issued on the activation Web site. The activation code activates NiceLabel on your computer. To activate the multiuser edition, do the following: 1. After you have installed the server and client parts of the multiuser edition, run NiceLabel from your server computer. No valid license is found. Click on the button Manage License. 2. Select Network Software Key and click on Next. 3. The primary network location path should be the same as the one entered at installation and click on Next. Note: Make sure to use UNC syntax when referring to the network location. Use the syntax \\server\share and not the syntax for mapped drives such as W:\share\. 4. Enter the required customer information and the key number and click on Next. 5. To activate the software automatically, click on the link Connect to the Activation server (recommended). 6. To activate the software manually, click on the provided Internet link for Web page activation. Your Internet browser will open the Network Key Number Activation Web site. Enter the key number and the registration number. Enter other user information if prompted. Click on the Activate button to retrieve the Activation code. Copy the Activation code and paste it in the field Activation Code in the open Manage License Activation code window of the opened labeling software. 7. Click on the Next button and follow the prompts to complete the activation process. Note: You can still activate NiceLabel if the computer does not have access to the Internet. 12

If the computer does not have Internet access, do the following: For the successful activation you need internet access to connect to the Activation server and get the Activation code. Sometimes the computer with NiceLabel installation does not have internet access. In such case you need to get the Activation code on some other computer where internet is available. The program License Manager is used to monitor and manage licenses. License Manager displays the information of the current client and also provides an overview of the total license occupation. You can also use it to enable/disable off-line mode for workstations. Off-line mode enables selected workstations to function in spite of the fact that the computer with licenses is not available or not accessible. It is used in environments where mobile label printing is required or in events where server system failure would otherwise stop the label production. The table at the bottom of the dialog box displays the occupation of the licenses.
