It describes a special feature fr mdule IE r PM, realized by an ptinal firmware.
1 SNMP 1.1 Overview Functinal Descriptin and Specificatins SNMP Agent Page 5 With the SNMP ptin f any RUB Ethernet mdule (IE r PM) yur RUBIDIUM system is capable f being used as a SNMP Netwrk Element. Yu can easily mnitr and cntrl the system using centralized netwrk management sftware. Frame 1 Frame 2 Frame 3 GPS 10MHz GT DT SR SL SV GPS 10MHz GT DT Lcal Area Netwrk IE 10/100base-T If yu need detailed infrmatin abut SNMP prtcl yu shuld have a lk at the related dcuments, as RFC 1157 fr example. Basically there are three types f SNMP messages: GET: the management statin requests status infrmatin frm an agent. SET: the management statin requests an agent t change a parameter. TRAP: the agent sends a message t indicate an event. The access t a SNMP system is cntrlled by cmmunities, these are text strings included in the message. Often the text PUBLIC (read nly) and PRIVATE (read and write) are used. But yu can add thers names r erase existing names. Any accessible element can be uniquely identified by its OID (Object Identifier). Fr a grup f OIDs usually a MIB file (management infrmatin base) is defined, which is a text file cntaining all relevant infrmatin fr each single OID. Fr the RUBIDIUM System the rubidium.mib has t be created by the user utilizing the RUBIDIUM CONFIGURATION PC prgram.
Functinal Descriptin and Specificatins SNMP Agent Page 6 1.2 The MIB File Execute Rubidium Cnfig.exe n yur cmputer. Open the Tls menu and select Create MIB File.... Please fllw the instructins f the Rubidium MIB Maker. First step: d yu want t create a new MIB file r d yu want t change an existing ne? Secnd step: built yur RUBIDIUM system. The MIB structure windw indicates the current built system. Add r remve RUB frames pressing the buttns f Edit Frame. Clicking n a mdule at the MIB structure enables yu t select the type f the mdule ut f the Edit Mdule drpdwn list. The structure has t crrespnd exactly t the real system, regarding the frame and mdule numbering and the type f each mdule.
Functinal Descriptin and Specificatins SNMP Agent Page 7 Third step: select the functinal grups and the versin f the MIB file. The fllwing Functinal Grups can be selected: Signal Path System Health Trap Related Rarely used Obslete cntains the mst imprtant status infrmatin t mnitr the signals f the system. Especially it cntains the warnings and alarms f the RUB switcher mdules. cntains the mst imprtant status infrmatin t mnitr the general RUBIDIUM system behaviur. Especially it cntains the status f the fan, f the temperature and f the pwer supply. cntains all the traps the mdules are able t generate. cntains all the rest. It may be used fr special applicatins nly. may be used if yu want t update an existing installatin which might n lnger be cmpatible. Fr mre infrmatin please cntact PLURA cmpany. MIB Versin: Please select a frmat which is cmpatible t yur SNMP manager.

Yu will see the screen flickering, but dn t wrry and dn t interrupt the prcess. Click n the OK buttn at the end, the MIB file has been created successfully.
Functinal Descriptin and Specificatins SNMP Agent 1.3 Cmmunities Page 9 The fllwing cmmunity strings are used by the RUB Ethernet mdule fr default. It is recmmended t change them in rder t avid unwanted access by guessing these strings. Read Cmmunity: public Write Cmmunity: private 1.4 Mnitring All status and setup infrmatin can be queried via SNMP fr every mdule that is present in yur Rubidium system. That means that yu can chse between the status mnitr frm the Ethernet mdule and yur SNMP management applicatin t cntrl the status f yur system. Hw yu get the setup and status infrmatin yu require depends n the special SNMP mnitring sftware yu are using. The mst likely and prbably best methd t gain infrmatin frm the MIB file is allwing yur management system (r a special MIB brwser) t lad the MIB file and then presenting the MIB s cntent as a tree r smething equivalent. Example f a simple MIB brwser:

The OID cnsist f a fixed part and a variable part that includes the physical lcatin f the mdule inside the frame and the mdule s type. 1.6 Traps Functinal Descriptin and Specificatins SNMP Agent Page 11 Several traps can be generated and sent t yur netwrk management applicatin. The kind f trap depends n the type f the mdule. Traps can be transmitted t indicate an event quickly. In particular, the fllwing trap-events are available: Any Mdule Cld Bt Cnfig Mdule Switcher (SL / SI / SV / SR): System Errr System Failure Changever Signal Failure Signal Warning Additinally, the Ethernet mdule can send traps fr special events, fr example n rebting, cmmunity changing and sme security related events. When yu first set up yur netwrk, yu may want t generate a test trap t test if all settings are crrect and ready t wrk. Yu may use the Cnfig trap fr this purpse. It s generated every time yu try t cnnect t r discnnect frm a mdule using the Rubidium Cnfig sftware via PC cnnectr at the RUB chassis.
Functinal Descriptin and Specificatins SNMP Agent Page 12 1.7 Set-Up 1.7.1 Web Interface The cmplete set-up can be made via the web interface f yur Ethernet mdule. Just type the IP address in the address field f yur brwser as described in the manual f the Ethernet mdule. Then chse Cnfiguratin, then click the red buttn t access the Ethernet mdule, then SNMP, and fllw the menu. Here is a list f the mst imprtant features available by the web interface: View and edit Cmmunity names Cnfigure the IP-address fr the trap receiver Set system infrmatin s Enable / disable sending f traps in general Enable / disable sending f individual traps 1.7.2 Enable/Disable Traps Traps can be cnfigured (enabled/disabled) via the SNMP prtcl as well. Just use the SNMP Set cmmand t send 1 r 0 n the trap yu want t enable r disable. Yu ll find the trap enable bits in the System part f each mdule.
