Gale Business Insights: Essentials (formerly Business & Company Resource Center) Why search Business Insights: Essentials? Business Insights: Essentials combines all of the content formerly found in Business & Company Resource Center with a new interface. Easily find information on companies, industries and more in the context of timely news, statistical data, and in-depth reports. To access Business Insights: Essentials 1. Go to the library website at http://hickeycollegelibrary.wordpress.com/ 2. Use your mouse to hover over Research Databases on the navigation bar at the top of any page at the site, and then choose Gale Databases. 3. On the next page, click on Search Gale Databases Remotely and On Campus. a. Note Accessing remotely? You will need to enter the password available in the Library Research Databases (Remote Access) folder in the G: drive. If you are off-campus and do not have the password, email library@hickeycollege.edu or call 314.434.2212 ext. 141 (Westport) or 113 (Lindbergh). 4. SCROLL DOWN towards the bottom of the page at Gale and click on Business Insights: Essentials. Search: A basic Search bar is available on the home page and the upper right corner of all other pages at the site. Type in a company name, ticker symbol, industry, SIC or NAICS code, product, brand name or topic and click Search. All results are available in a single results list at Business Insights: Essentials. Closer look at the Results Page: On the results page, you will find company or industry profiles, followed by links to brands and/or articles related to your search term(s). The Company Profile (followed by Industry Profiles) will always be first on the list of search results. At the left, you will find the content types listed, along with the number of items in each type. Click to access only that type of content, i.e. Journal articles 206 are available. You may also search within your results, as well as limit your results by publication type and by subject. 2
Company Finder Click on this tab to view companies by location, industry, revenue or number of employees. For example, if you were looking for companies within a particular state, choose the state and click Update. The Company Finder returns a list of companies headquartered in that state, along with their locations, number of employees and revenue. The default order is by revenue. Use the arrows to re-sort your results by ascending or descending order. To narrow your results, select another category, fill in the information and then click Update. o If you would like to download your results (up to 500 items) into Excel, click Download as CSV Click on a company name to access the Company Profile. Remember that you can use the Advanced Search form to perform more complex searches. Industries (Industry Profiles) Search on industries from the basic Search box on the home page or on the banner in the upper right corner of all other pages. Just enter an SIC or NAICS code or industry name in the Basic Search box and click Search. The results page will give you any company profiles containing that term, followed by a link to the industry profile. Click on the Industry Profile name to access the entry for that industry (see next page in this handout). 3
Industry Profiles (It is also possible to access a browsable, searchable list of industries by clicking on Industries.) Article Search It is very easy to perform an article search in Business Insights: Essentials, as any search in the database brings back all results accessible from one page. If you are interested only in journal articles, select Journals from the content type list on the left side of the results screen. You can sort your results by publication date, article title, publication title or relevance. You may also search within your current results list, as well as limit your results by publication type and by subject. A typical Industry Profile Provides key statistical information about the industry o links to great graphs and charts Links to profiles of top companies Overview essays related to the industry Rankings of companies from many categories and editions of Gale s Business Rankings Annual Unions and business associations related to the industry Market share rankings for many categories of companies in that industry from the Market Share Reporter. 4
Comparison Charts A GREAT new feature to help you analyze and compare statistical data on companies and industries. To create a chart, click the Comparison Charts tab and then select either Companies or Industries. Click Add/Remove to add up to 6 companies or industries to compare. Begin typing in a company or industry in the Search to Add field. If it is in the database, choose it from the drop-down list. Continue to Add/Remove until you have chosen all companies or industries of interest (or until you reach the maximum number of six companies or industries. Choose revenue, sales or employee metrics to display in your chart. Easily switch to a Table format or search for related articles. Print or download as a jpg or pdf file. 5
Other Features of Business Insights: Essentials Saved Items - It s easy to gather documents into a list by clicking on the STAR icon next to the article title. The icon turns GREEN if you have marked a document. All documents marked in this manner will be easily accessible under the Saved Items tab at the top of any page at the site. Print or email a list of documents by clicking on Print or Email. Search History tab lists all searches that you have conducted during the current search session. To reexecute a search from the list, click the hyperlinked term in the list. To modify one of your previous searches, click the Revise link. Document Tools are provided in the upper right corner of an article or document. Save Saves your document to the Saved Items list (see above) Print Preview Reformats the current page for printing Generate PDF Creates a PDF file of the document Citation tool Choose MLA7. Click Download Save and then copy/paste the citation into your paper s Works Cited list. Share Includes sharing by Email, Bookmark URL or Social Media Sites. Advanced Search and Subject Guide Search Use Advanced Search if you know the title or author of a document, or want to search for documents within a certain date range from a publication. Use Subject Guide Search (access from Advanced Search screen) to browse and then search from a dynamic, alphabetical list of topics, people, products, organizations and more. 6
