JESSE ASHBURN FAMILY (#315) Source: Heritage of Putnam County Tennessee 2008 by Putnam County Heritage Book Committee and County Heritage Inc. Pg. 90 & 91 Jesse was the second child of Emanuel M. and Millia Milly Baldwin Ashburn of Fentress Co., TN. He was born 7 9 1857 and named for his great grandfather Jesse Ashburn. This first Jesse, with his family, was living in Overton County, TN by 1820. Ashburn s Creek in this county was named because they lived near it. The first Jesse had received 336 a. in land grants. He also shared 530 a. more with two other men. These were granted from 1813 till 1837. Five hundred acres was located in Fentress County and the rest was in Overton. Our Jesse, at 13 years of age, was residing in district 4 of Putnam county with his parents and seven siblings. He could not read nor write at that time and had not attended school that year. He met his future bride in this district. She was Martha Ann Randolph, daughter of Lancaster and Rebecca Sherley Randolph. Her birth date was 5 3 1857. She at thirteen could both read and write. They wed about 1877, probably in district 4 of Putnam County. By the 1880 census, taken that June, they were located in district 8 of DeKalb County. They lived beside his father s family. Jesse was then able to read. He and Martha had a two year old daughter Nancy Nannie Jesse. Jesse was farming land he probably did not own. He began to buy land as he could afford it. These properties were: 1 a. in district 8 of DeKalb County from L. L. Bozarth on 2 12 1895; 30 a. in district 8 from John L. Palmer on 11 9 1899; 25 a. in the Mine Lick area of district 8 from V. W. Anderson, 5 2 1901; and 30 a. in the Mine Lick area of district 8 for Hick Maynard on 11 11 1903. Meanwhile Martha bore him eleven more children: Jesse (Feb. 1879 Sept. 1879); Sam (7 15 1882 1 13 1968); William Albert (9 9 1884 Oct 1964); Lou Ann (11 11 1886 Feb. 1996); Lola B. (5 20 1889 10 12 1976); Lee P. (5 20 1889 1 30 1943); Bettie Josephine (5 13 1892 Feb. 1977); Allie Dee (8 31 1894 5 17 1951); Oval (3 21 1898 10 4 1967); and Arvil (3 21 1898 by 1900). By 1900 the family resided in the Bozarth Township of district 8. Nannie has been married six years to Tim Williams and Arvil has died. By 1910 Sam has been married to Mattie V. Carr nine years and was living in district 1 of Putnam County. The other seven children were in DeKalb County with their parents. Jesse bought a 1 ¼ a. lot on Puckett Lane in Silver Point 1 10 1912. He moved his family there. On 10 17 1918, he purchased land on the Smithville/Silver Point Road also in Putnam County. By 1920 all, but Lou Ann, of his remaining children are married: Lola to Willie Butts 4 23 1911; Bettie to Wilson Clemons 9 1 1912; Albert to Minnie Burton 11 1 1913; Lee to Pearly Carr 7 16 1916; Allie to Boda Puckett 9 5 1916; and Oval to Nola Brown 11 29 1919. Lou Ann, her widowed brother Lee with his son and her brother Oval with his bride lived with Jesse and Martha in Silver Point. Lou Ann married Evert Jones 6 11 1922. Martha died 5 9 1926 and was buried at the Burton Ashburn Cemetery on family land. In 1930 Lou Ann, Evert and their daughter Martha Elizabeth lived with Jesse, her brother Lee, and his son Malcolm D. Family stated that Lou Ann had helped rear Malcolm since his mother died when he was one. She cared for Jesse as he aged. He died 6 2 1941 and was laid to rest beside his wife. (Pictured left: Albert William and Minnie Bell Burton Ashburn about 1913). On 8 18 1927 Jesse, N. C. Burton, W. B. Burton, and M. B. Burton all sold a lot, for $1 only, to the trustees of the Church of Christ at Silver Point. This was land that came from a section where each joined the other.

This land was donated to construct a building at this site. Jesse and the Burtons were all members of the local congregation. Five months later, Jesse had sold his son Lee a lot joining this church property. Jesse s fourth child William Albert had, at twenty four, purchased a house and lot in Silver Point. By 2 25 1910, he had sold this place to his brother in law Tim Williams. Tim was farming, but Albert was a fruit tree agent. At twenty nine Albert wed Minnie Bell Burton in Putnam County. She was the daughter of William B. Campbell Burton (1850 1915) and his wife Amanda Green Puckett (1853 1938). Minnie was born in 1884. Their first child Clara Nell arrived in 1914. On 11 1 1916, the couple sold their 1/6 interest in real estate in both Putnam and DeKalb Co., TN, as well as that located in LaSalle and McMullin Co., TX. This total of 1000 a. and the personal property of the late William B. C. Burton and his widow Amanda was sold to L. D. Burton for $1,600 to be paid in three notes. The 1920 census revealed the family in district 13 of Putnam County on a farm they owned. Two years later, a second daughter Dorothy arrived. The Ashburns were members of the Church of Christ at Silver Point. They later inherited land that came down through the Burton side. Clara Nell married Tamer Denny. They resided in Buffalo Valley and reared their daughter Dorothy Nell there. She married Eldon Stout. They lived and work the family farm. They have three children: Lucinda married Russell Moss and had sons Frank and Andrew; Dr. Jeffery Bunker Stout married Amy Ewell and had children Samuel and Kirby; Patrick Denny Stout is the youngest. Albert s daughter Dorothy married Ralph Mitchell. This couple moved to Atlanta, GA. They had a daughter Clara and a son Ralph. Albert was a member of the Putnam County Court for a number of years. Minnie died 8 22 1964 and was buried at the family cemetery. Later that year, Albert died and was buried beside his wife of 51 years at the Burton Ashburn Cemetery in Silver Point, TN.
