Executive Summary Supplier capability in China Connectivity applications and interactive information platforms are spurring growth in China s line as makers shift from traditional nonconnected devices to connected versions. Companies are investing in new ICs and solutions, introducing niche designs, and integrating value-added functionality to broaden acceptance. Such endeavors will entail higher spending for components, although many suppliers interviewed for this report actually plan to lower prices. Some are keeping quotes stable. Others are augmenting rates, albeit minimally, to offset capital and R&D expenditure. Differentiation and price competition with product lines that have also joined the connectivity bandwagon is a challenge for most suppliers. The growing popularity of car infotainment systems, -equipped mobile phones, and tablet PCs with modules is expected to impact product sales. Key findings 1. Enhanced Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and GPRS functions are the popular connectivity options and interactive information platforms integrated in latest product releases. Wireless RF technology for communication is also adopted in some models. 2. In the area of software development, recent breakthroughs from some companies allow tracking even in blind spots. This mechanism uses a GPRS module to approximate the location and communication with cellular base stations. 3. With regard to product mix, the majority of businesses are either sole manufacturers of in-car devices and vehicle tracking systems, or accessories. Several companies are also engaged in mixed production, specifically of portable and personal devices, and car- and large vehicle-use models. 4. More than 75 percent of output is exported, comprising mostly of accessories and in-car devices and vehicle tracking systems. The EU and North America are the primary destinations. In coming months, exports to Central and South America, and Africa will be increased. Shipments to these locations, however, are industryspecific. 5. Half of surveyed manufacturers are expecting sales from overseas shipments to increase by more than 20 percent in coming months. Suppliers are boosting production capability and broadening their respective selections. Scope & methodology This report covers the major products of China s industry, namely portable devices, personal trackers, in-car and vehicle tracking systems, and accessories. For each category, details about the different types offered, their features and price determinants are provided. The Industry Overview elaborates on issues affecting production and exports. It also identifies the strategies employed to boost sales and enhance overall competitiveness. To reflect the industry structure, the majority of suppliers featured in this report are local, privately owned enterprises. Hong Kong- and Taiwaninvested businesses are also covered. The majority of the companies are based in Guangdong province. The hub accounts for nearly 80 percent of mainland China s export sales, and is currently the center for R&D in the line. To produce the report, Global Sources interviewed a wide range of suppliers. Instead of focusing simply on high-profile makers, we compiled a representative sample of large, midsize and emerging manufacturers. All profiled companies are export-oriented professional suppliers that are verified by Global Sources. Each supplier is confirmed to be authentic with a legally registered business. All companies are visited three or more times by Global Sources to ensure they are export-ready and have real offices and products. The listed contact person has been verified to represent the registered company. In each case, companies were required to answer specific questions designed to verify their manufacturing and export credentials. All profiled suppliers participated in a survey designed to provide insight into price trends, sales outlook and target markets in the next six months. All questions are single choice. Results were calculated based on the actual number of valid responses to each question. Global Sources supplier rankings Suppliers are ranked using a 6-star ranking system. Industry Overview Industry Overview Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and GPRS applications are propelling China s industry as demand for devices with various connectivity options enabling interactive information platforms rises, especially overseas. Although market growth of portable navigation devices is incomparable to that of smartphones and tablet PCs with modules, a steady increase is still forecast. Upcoming models will utilize digital broadcasts and GSM networks as the thrust of product development continues to shift from traditional and nonconnected PNDs to connected units. Such devices will be able to obtain realtime data for traffic, stocks, weather and information on nearby establishments. By 2015, about 88 percent of all PNDs manufactured are forecast to support connectivity functions, according to Berg Insight. China makers are likewise releasing niche designs and integrating valueadded functionality into personal trackers, optimistic that expanded Main production center usability and the popularity of PNDs will bolster sales of the former. To stimulate adoption and encourage broader acceptance, suppliers are developing user-targeted products. To ensure that device specifications are well-suited for the intended applications, companies are also improving ease of use and practicality. Wireless RF technology for communication is embedded in some models to eliminate additional network costs from telecom carriers. Other R&D targets include improving positioning response times and miniaturization. Distance tracking, data logging via a 4MB internal memory, motion sensor and information retrieval in blind spots are also examples of value add-ons. Meanwhile, -enabled car electronics is still mainstream, with logistics, transportation and fleet management applications propelling the automotive tracking industry in China. Guangdong Guangdong province is home to 80 percent of suppliers in mainland China. Shenzhen is the largest manufacturing hub there, and is bolstered by the province s rich supply of raw materials, strong R&D capability and lower costs. In coming months, production is forecast to shift away from Taiwan, Japan and South Korea in favor of this area. The capability to detect a car s position, speed and fuel status is typical in new models. Increasing demand for 3D map viewing, high-definition resolution displays and multiple functions are also prompting domestic car manufacturers to underscore upgrades. Many have started enhancing product configurations, using faster processors, larger memory and bigger screens to add value. capability is likewise being added in entertainment devices such as in-dash car DVD players. As for accessories, market demand follows the trend in portable devices. Universal models that can be used for mobile phones, and MP3 and MP4 players are prioritized. Hurdling the connectivity shift With rising demand for connected units and the growing popularity of car navigation systems and -equipped handsets, most China makers face the challenge of product differentiation. By 2014, sales of cell phones are expected to reach $770 million, according to Berg Insight. This will be driven by demand for smartphones and plans by some telecom companies to incorporate capability in midrange handsets. In response, small and midsize suppliers are adopting new solutions that will increase efficiency and boost product performance. Value add-ons such as these, however, entail higher manufacturing costs. Built-in communication modules in portable devices increase production outlay by $50, while a Bluetooth equivalent adds $2. In the case of portable devices and personal trackers, suppliers need to design models with better and targeted applications to generate sales.
