Introduction Welcome to The Paper Tiger Single User Edition 4.1. This Quick Start Guide will assist you in setting up The Paper Tiger Single User 4.1 for both the Basic and Professional edition. Setup of The Paper Tiger Single User Edition 4.1 consists of four stages, the Pre-Planning Stage the Installation Stage, Configuration Stage(which includes the data conversion if applicable), and Uninstall Stage (for owners of Version 1.x, 2.x, 3.x and 4.0). After the Installation process is completed, you should review the Notes about Database Administration for important tips about maintaining your database. Installation Pre-Planning Please be aware that there are some technical tips we suggest you follow prior to starting the installation process. Please read through the following section before you attempt to install the software. Very Important: Sometimes software installations can be impacted by software that is running on your computer. The Server Module is particularly vulnerable to this. When selecting a computer to be the server, you should select a computer that is not heavily used by other applications. Also, select one if possible that is not regularly used by a desktop user. Please temporarily disable your anti-virus program s auto-protect function. Also, temporarily close down any applications that are running in the tray. These can be restarted after the installation has successfully completed. Following is an example of the applications running in the tray. The tray is located at the bottom of your screen, to the left of the time. Conversion Pre-Planning If you are moving to The Paper Tiger 4.1 from an older version of The Paper Tiger there are some things that you need to do before starting the Installation process in order to successfully move your data from the older Version to Version 4.1 If you are running a 1.x, 2.x or 3.x version of Paper Tiger, do a database backup and save it in a place where you can find it later on. If you are running version 4.0 you have several options you can choose from: 1) Create an export file containing all of the locations in your database and save it in a place where you can find it later. If you are running the Network version, this does not convert your Network User information. They will have to be re-entered in your 4.1 version later. a) Go to the File\Export Menu. b) Check the Select All box to select all locations c) Click on the Browse button to select a place to keep the Export file and give it a name. d) Click on the Export button to create the file. 2) Save a Database Backup file to load into the Version 4.1. If you are running the Network version, this does not convert your Network User information. They will have to be re-entered in your 4.1 version later. a) Go to the File\Database Backup Manager Menu. b) Check the Full Database Radio button and click on Backup Database to ensure that you have a full Database as the last backup on the file. Page 2

c) Then check the Create New Backup File button and click the Backup Database button. This creates a new backup file so that you can archive the file from the previous step. d) Select the second entry in the Backup File Name grid and click on the Archive Backup File button. It will then ask you to locate a place to keep the archived file. Save it in a place where you can find it later. 3) Use the Copy Database(s) from Another Paper Tiger Installation feature that is in Version 4.1. This is the easiest method and does not require any special action before installing Version 4.1. For the Network Version, this is the only method that automatically moves the Network User Information. Regardless of which method you use to convert your data, never uninstall your old version of Paper Tiger until Version 4.1 is successfully installed and your data is successfully loaded into it. Installation Stage To install The Paper Tiger Single User Edition Version 4.1, follow the steps below. Step Action 1. Insert the The Paper Tiger Single User Edition 4.1 CD-ROM in your CD-ROM drive. Click the Windows Start button; select Run and type D:\setup.exe where D is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive. Click OK to run the setup program. Note: If you need to change Installation settings at any point during the installation process, you can click the Back button. 2. After the initial welcome screen is displayed, click next. The License Agreement will be displayed. Be sure to read this agreement thoroughly. If you agree to the terms of this agreement, click Yes, and the installation will continue. If you do not agree to the terms of this agreement, click No, and the installation program will exit. 3. The next screen will display the directory in which The Paper Tiger will be installed. It is recommended that this remain unchanged; however, if you do need to change the directory, you may do so by clicking the Change button. Once you have chosen the installation directory, click the Next button. 4. Setup is ready to begin copying files onto your computer. Press the Next button to begin the installation. Setup will copy the files. The majority of this portion of the installation happens on the SQL Server setup process; which may take a few minutes depending on the speed of your system. When the installation program has finished copying the program files, you will receive a message that setup is complete. 5. Click Finish to exit the setup program. Configuration Stage The following prompts will occur when the program is run for the first time.: Step Action 1. Upon starting the program for the first time, you will be asked whether you want to enter Serial number (if you click OK) or you want to continue with trail (Start free trail) this serial number can be found on the back of the CD-ROM jacket. Enter the Number and click OK. 2 If you click on Start Free Trail, it will open another window which will show the trail information from this window you will be able to Buy the product (click on Buy Now!), Enter Serial Number and Continue with trail. Note: If you are continuing with trail version, you will not be able to see all the Paper Tiger Options. Page 3

Step Action 3 Once you enter the serial number and click on OK, it will show you another window with below 3 options: If you click on Learn Software it will open the learning resources at the Paper Tiger website. If you click Create New Database, go to Creating Your Single User Database If you do, click Open Existing Database and you will go into the database conversion process. Please refer to the Data Conversion Instructions later in this document. After the conversion is completed, go to Completing the Configuration. You can see above wizard later, by selecting File \ Startup Wizard. Creating Your Single User Database If this is not the initial use of The Paper Tiger Single User Edition, please skip this section and continue to the section entitled Opening an Existing Single User Database. Otherwise, follow the steps below to create a new single user database. Step Action 1. You will be presented a wizard and it will allow you to create new database in the steps. In the first step it will show you the summary of the wizard, click on Next to proceed. 2 It will allow you to enter the database name, once you enter the database name and click on Next, it will take while to create the database. 3 It will allow you to enter password, if you don t want to give the password you can check I do not want a password and click Next to proceed. 4 This step allows you to setup a location. If Paper Tiger resides on another drive that C:, replace the C: with that drive. 7. The older version will uninstall. Your new version of The Paper Tiger Single User Edition Version will remain on your computer. The Paper Tiger Administrator Functions At least one user of Taming The Paper Tiger Network Edition 4.1 should be given the role of Administrator. Administrators are responsible for backing up the database, adding new user accounts, creating new databases, deleting locations, emptying trash, and updating the Network License. Most organizations backup their network drives on a regular basis. If this is the case, you may rarely need to open the network database for administration. However, it is very important that you remember your administrator s password even during long periods of not using it! There are a few things to keep in mind about administrative mode: 1. With multiple users tossing items regularly, the trash bin can quickly become the largest location you have. It is a good idea to check the number of items in the trash periodically and empty the trash accordingly. 2. It is important that you do database backups regularly even if the Network drives are backed up on a regular basis. This gives you as an administrator more capabilities to restore your database if you need to. Paper Tiger uses the SQL Server backup process to back the database files up. The backup files are stored in the PaperTiger PTNetwork41 DBBackups folder. SQL Server controls this folder, so you should be very careful in manually moving files in or out of this folder. Typically, the database is automatically backed up when the Administrator closes down Paper Tiger. It is not automatically backed up when Network Users close the system down. 3. The database can be backed up at any time by the Administrator using the Database Backup Manager. It is located under the File menu. Page 10

d. If you wish you can copy a backup file to an archive location and delete it from the Paper Tiger Backup folder. Select the Backup file that you want to archive. It cannot be the latest file. That one must be maintained on the system for backup purposes. Then click the Archive Backup file button. Page 14
