Integration Integrating the BACnet MS/TP Communication Module into a BAS involves three steps: 1. Connecting the unit controller to the network 2. Addressing and establishing communications with the unit controller 3. Configuring the unit controller Required Equipment Laptop with a serial port Serial terminal device application (such as Windows HyperTerminal) Null modem serial cable for setting the device instance number. Refer to the MicroTech III Unit Controller Protocol Information document, ED 15103 (available on www.mcquay.com) for details. Connecting Unit to the Network After inserting the BACnet Communication Module to the unit controller, connect the unit controller into the BACnet network following the three steps below: 1. Replace network cable plug in P3 (see Figure 3.) 2. Set the MAC Address in Address Switch S3. Note: A MAC (Media Access Control) address must be assigned to the BACnet MS/TP Communication Module. See your network administrator for assistance, if necessary. 3. Apply power to the unit controller. Note: You must maintain the polarity of the signal throughout the network. Always connect + to + and to. Addressing and Establishing Communications Once the unit controller with attached BACnet Communicaiton Module has been connected to the network, it is ready to be addressed so that communicaiton can be established. The steps below describe this process (see Table 2 for additional BACnet parameters and their default values). 1. Verify that the MAC address of the unit controller is unique on the BACnet network. 2. Change the default BACnet MS/TP Address of the unit controller. The BACnet MS/TP device address (MAC) Address of the unit controller in a BACnet MS/TP network is set in an eight-position dipswitch (i.e. address switch) on the BACnet MS/TP Communication Module. The address is physically set using eight binary switches. Bit 0 of the address corresponds to switch position 1 and bit 7 of the address corresponds to switch position 8. All MicroTech III unit controllers must be masters; therefore, bit 7 (switch 8) is always equal to 0 (open). Table 1summarizes the various ways to describe a dipswitch setting. A closed switch (switch ON) is a 1 and an open switch is a 0. Figure 5 shows the address switch as set from the factory with all switches OFF = open (i.e. in the up position). Table 2 summarizes the address values when the dipswitches are ON. Figure 6 shows an example of the dipswitch settings for a common network address. Note that he MAC address of the device must be unique on the BACnet network. Table 1. Explanation of Dipswitch States (ON or OFF) Address Switch State Description ON Closed = dipswitch in down position = 1 OFF Open = dipswitch in up position = 0 IM 928-2 11

Figure 5. BACnet Communicaiton Module Address Switch (S3) Default Settings to OFF (Open)* * Note that the switches on the actual BACnet Communication Module are numbered: 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 from left to right when the module is attached on the unit controller baseboard (as shown in Figures 1 and 3). Table 2. Address Switch Values When Switch is ON (Closed) Switch # Value Value When Switch is ON = Closed 1 2 to the zero power 1 2 2 to the 1 st power 2 3 2 to the 2 nd power 4 4 2 to the 3 rd power 8 5 2 to the 4 th power 16 6 2 to the 5 th power 32 7 2 to the 6 th power 64 8 Must always be in the up (OFF) position N/A Figure 6 shows an example of a typical address setting. The digital switch positions as read from right to left are: 01001100. This provides an address of 76 as illustrated below. Figure 6. BACnet Communicaiton Module Address Switch (S3 )- Example of Common Network Address Setting* 0+ 64 + 0 + 0 + 8 + 4 + 0 + 0 = 76 * Note that the switches on the actual BACnet Communication Module are numbered: 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 from left to right when the module is attached on the unit controller baseboard (as shown in Figures 1 and 3). 3. Cycle power to the unit controller. Note: After you set the address in the switches, you must cycle power (turn the unit controller off and then on again) in order for the new address to take effect. 4. Change the data transmission rate, if necessary. The D4 LED flickers when the module is receiving data from the network, and the D3 LED flickers when the communication module is sending data to the network. See Figure 1 for details. 5. Verify the network address using the Wink Command process as described below (optional). Verifying the Network Address using the Wink Command The BACnet Communication Module implements a unit identification mode command to the unit controller by using the BACnet ReinitializeDevice request with a password of wink (all lower case). The Wink unit identification function allows verification of an individual unit network address without opening the unit access panels. The compressor shuts off during this period and the Minimum Compressor Off Countdown Timer must expire before the compressor is allowed to run again. The Wink command can be used during all operating and non-operating modes (ex. Alarms) except for Brownout Mode. Upon receiving a wink command from a network management node, the unit controller exhibits the following identification sequence (all occur simultaneously): 12 IM 928-2

Room Sensor Status LED: Flashes (on 0.5 sec, off 0.5 sec) for 15 seconds. Fan: The fan turns off for 5 seconds, turns on for 5 seconds, then off again for 5 seconds. Compressor: The compressor turns off for a minimum of 15 seconds. Configuring the Unit Controller All unit controllers are loaded with software and configured at the factory for standalone operation. The unit is ready to operate with default setpoint parameters that can be changed via the BAS (building automation system). Refer to the Protocol Document, ED 15103 (available on www.mcquay.com) for descriptions of the available BACnet objects. Restoring the BACnet Communication Module to Default Values Setting the BACnet Communicaiton Module back to its default configuration requires the following steps: 1. Press and hold the DEFAULT switch S2. While holding this switch, press and release the RESET switch S1. The LEDs should flash once, turn off and turn on one after another. 2. Release the DEFAULT switch S2 (once all four LEDs are steady) to restore the BACnet Communicaiton Module to default values. Factory Configuration Settings for the BACnet Communication Module If the unit controller is equipped with a factory-installed BACnet MS/TP Communication Module, the unit controller is preconfigured with the values shown in Table 3. Field-Installed BACnet Communication Module A BACnet MS/TP Communication Module can be added to a unit controller in the field for these reasons: The unit did not originally ship with a communication module. The unit originally shipped with a LONWORKS Communication Module but requires replacement with a BACnet Communication Module. Table 3. Default Communication Setup Parameter Settings Parameter Name BACnet MSTP MSTP MAC Address 1 Switch Setting MSTP Baud Rate 38400 (9600, 19200, 38400 and 76800) Device Instance Number 2 300 Max APDU Length 3 480 Device Object Name 4 WSHP = MTIIIUC_WSHP_0000300 FCU = MTIIIUC_FCU_0000300 Important Notes 1. The MAC address is set by switch setting on the BACnet MS/TP Communication Module. 2. The device instance number is factory set at 300. This number must be unique on the network and must be set in the field. 3. The Max APDU Length parameter should not be set higher than 480 for BACnet MS/TP (this value can not be adjusted through the Configuration Menu). 4. The Device Object Name is set to factory default. This must be unique on the network and must be set in the field. 5. You need a computer with a serial port, and serial terminal device application (such as Windows HyperTerminal), and a serial null modem cable for setting the device instance number using the Configuration Menu. Refer to the Protocol Information Document, ED 15103 (available on www.mcquay.com). IM 928-2 13
