Legacy Family Tree-Virtual User s Group Meeting September 5, 2014 Chat Log Got your indexing done today? Fun way to pass the time before we begin... Q: Nice indexing while you wait!! A: Yes, any chance I get. Q: LOL! I love that you are doing indexing!! Way to go! A: :) Q: TGIF A: :) Q: Is there a handout for this session? A: Here is the link to today's handout http://www.familytreewebinars.com/pdf/webinar-free5445.pdf Q: Hello. This is my first time here. A: Welcome! Q: Thank you for the link to the handout. Looks like another interesting session. New to Legacy 8 so I'm looking for all the help I can get.

A: Glad you're here! Q: Good evening from Wales A: Welcome! Q: Is there a syllibus for today's Webinar? A: There is no syllabus for live Webinars. Q: How can I enter pictures that are in photo gallery? Am stuck on the instructions in the Legacy manual. Mahalo A: See the support article on adding media at http://support.legacyfamilytree.com/article/aa-00337. Q: Will this be recorded so I can view later? A: This webinar session will be recorded for viewing in our archives section of our webinar site. Q: Do you need a membership to view all of the Legacy related videos that you just showed us? A: The Legacy related videos are free. Q: Why do some Events entries read differently on the screen vs. on reports? A: That will depend on the Event style you picked for the report. Click the Report Options button and select the Format tab and click the Event Narrative Format button.

Q: How should the locality be entered on dates before the US existed-i.e. 1745? A: See the article "Backup & Restore - how to backup Legacy 8 files" at http://support.legacyfamilytree.com/article/aa-00868. Q: It's the Family Group and the typed info sometimes differs. What do you mean by the Event style? A: Numbered, Bulletted, No number or bullet, or Events put into one paragraph. Check it out. Q: Is there a way to bring up the county a city is in if you don't know the county? Some entries have the counties other don't because I do not know the county. A: Use the Geo Location DB. Enter the city, leave the County field blank, enter the state and click Search. Q: Would you not put in the name of the church? Where would you put it? Terry D. A: Use the Address for the Event. To open the Address box, click the + button to the right of the location. ENter the church in the Address box. Q: I've stopped using the postal abbreviations such as TN. In style books they are only supposed to be used on a mailing address, not in narratives or reports. So I now use the appropriate abbreviation in the shortcut such as Tenn. Terry A: Each location in the Master Location List has a regular location name (long) and a short location name. I would put style guide location form like Tenn. in the Short Location name for the place in the Master Location List. You can select to use short location names when doing books and charts. Q: Scotland, for example, does not have counties, but I often get the parish level as the birth/baptism information. I've started putting "Fyvie Parish" in its place. Can you see a problem with this? A: Historically, Scitland had counties, so I enter a place like the following : "Auldearn, Nairn, Scotland"

Q: Is there a way to print the burial notes in the list of those buried in a particular cemtery? I put plot information there and it would make it very helpful to find the graves when I visit the cemetery. (escpecially in large cemeteries). A: Yes, in the report screen, click the big Report Options button. In the options screen, select the Include tab and then under Notes check mark "Birth, christening, death, burial." Q: Try this again with my question worded to make more sense: If a record, like a census, only shows the place as a township which inlcudes several townshow should we enter the the place when the specific town is not known? A: That is a user choice. I usually put in the township (when I know it) if the family did not live in a corporated town. Q: I don't want to time to look up the exmple, some towns, were listed as Glenwood Township, later is would read Glenwood. To be consistant would you drop the "Township" or keep it. A: We can't answer the specifics for each place. What was it called when your people lived there? Q: Is Legacy looking at doing verification for UK jurisdictions in the future? A: No. Q: I know you said label it what it was called then, but do you make a note of what it's currently called if its name has changed? A: I invented a "Current Location" Event. This was quite helpful for my ancestor from Galicia. After 1918, there village found itself in Poland. So for my great-grandfather's birth place I have his place as it was in 1859 "Oleszyce, Galiicia, Austria". My "Current Location" Event has it as "Oleszyce,, Przemysl, Poland."

Q: Currently, the mapping feature requires Internet Explorer. I'm sure others have abandoned IE as I have - will you make this feature available with other browsers (Firefox, Chrome)? A: Legacy uses Internet Explorer as its internal browser (which is why we use Bing Maps). I don't foresee any changes for Legacy regarding browser. Q: If you only had one location to clean up, would you use the Edit button rather than the combine? A: Yes, if there is only one location to correct/clean up there is nothing to combine it with. You can speed up Master Location List a little by clicking the Options button and selecting Purge Unused and then click on the Options button again and click on Combine Duplicates. Q: What do we do with "Saskatchewan"?? A: Here is how my Dad's Short Location name for his birth place looks "Lac Vert,, SK, CAN"
