Some useful lemmas on the ege Szege inex arxiv: v [math.co] 5 Jun 018 Shengjie He 1 1. Department of Mathematics, Beijing Jiaotong University, Beijing, , China Abstract The ege Szege inex of a graph G is efine as Sz e (G) = uv E(G) m u (uv G)m v (uv G), where m u (uv G) (resp., m v (uv G)) is the number of eges whose istance to vertex u (resp., v) is smaller than the istance to vertex v (resp., u), respectively. Recently, Wang et al. [G. Wang, S. Li, D. Qi, H. Zhang, On the ege-szege inex of unicyclic graphs with given iameter, Appl. Math. Comput. 336 (018) ] ientifie the minimum ege-szege inex of the n-vertex unicyclic graphs with a given iameter. By using another approach, we characterize the graph with minimum ege Szege inex among all the unicyclic graphs with given orer an iameter in this paper. Keywors: Ege Szege inex; Szege inex; Wiener inex; Unicyclic graph; Diameter. 010 MSC: 05C40, 05C90 1 Introuction Throughout this paper, all graphs we consiere are finite, unirecte, an simple. Let G be a connecte graph with vertex set V(G) an ege set E(G). For a vertex u V(G), the egree of u, enote by G (u), is the number of vertices which are ajacent to u. Call a vertex u a penent vertex of G, if G (u) = 1 an call an ege uv a penent ege of G, if G (u) = 1 or G (v) = 1. For any two vertices u,v V(G), let (u,v G) enote the istance between u an v in G. The iameter of a graph G is the maximum istance between pairs of vertices of G. Denote by P n, S n an C n a path, star an cycle on n vertices, respectively. Let N represent the set of natural numbers. If a an b are two natural numbers with a b, [a,b] enote the set {n N a n b}. The Wiener inex is one of the olest an the most thoroughly stuie topological inices. The Wiener inex of a graph G is efine as W(G) = (u,v G). {u,v} V(G) For any ege e = uv ofg, V(G) can be partitione into three sets by comparing with the istance of the vertex in V(G) to u an v, an the three sets are as follows: N u (e G) = {w V(G) : (u,w G) < (v,w G)}, N v (e G) = {w V(G) : (v,w G) < (u,w G)}, N 0 (e G) = {w V(G) : (u,w G) = (v,w G)}. Corresponing author. s: he @16.com (Shengjie He) 1
The number of vertices of N u (e G), N v (e G) an N 0 (e G) are enote by n u (e G), n v (e G) an n 0 (e G), respectively. If G is a tree, then the formula W(G) = n u (e G)n v (e G) gives e=uv E(G) a long time known property of the Wiener inex. Accoring to this result, a new topological inex, name by Szege inex, was introuce by Gutman [4], which is an extension of the Wiener inex an efine by Sz(G) = n u (e G)n v (e G). e=uv E(G) For other results on the Wiener an Szege inices, we refer to [3, 8, 16, 17]. An ege version of the Wiener inex (resp., Szege inex) is also introuce, name ege Wiener inex (resp., ege Szege inex). Ife = uv anf = ab are two eges ofganw is a vertex of G, then the istance between e an w is efine as (e,w G) = min{(u,w G),(v,w G)} an the istance between e an f is efine as (e,f G) = min{(u,f G),(v,f G)}. The ege Wiener inex [] is efine as follows: W e (G) = (e,f G). {e,f} E(G) For e = uv E(G), let M u (e G) be the set of eges whose istance to the vertex u is smaller than the istance to the vertex v, an M v (e G) be the set of eges whose istance to the vertex v is smaller than the istance to the vertex u. Set m u (e G) = M u (e G) an m v (e G) = M v (e G). Gutman an Ashrafi [5] introuce an ege version of the Szege inex, name ege Szege inex. The ege Szege inex of G is efine as Sz e (G) = m u (uv G)m v (uv G). uv E(G) In [5], some basic properties of the ege Szege inex were establishe by Gutman. It can be checke that the penent eges make no contributions to the ege Szege inex of a graph. Najafi-Arani et al. [1] prove that for every connecte graph G, Sz e (G) W e (G) with equality if an only if G is a tree. A unicyclic graph of orer n is a connecte graph with n eges. In [1], Cai an Zhou etermine the n-vertex unicyclic graphs with the largest, the secon largest, the smallest an the secon smallest ege Szege inices, respectively. Li [9] establishe a relation between the ege Szege inex an Szege inex of the unicyclic graphs. Let U n, be the set of unicyclic graphs of orer n with iameter for n. Tan [14] an Shi [13] inepenently etermine the graph in U n, with minimum Wiener inex. Liu et al. [11] characterize the graph in U n, with minimum Szege inex. Recently, Wang et al. [15] ientifie the minimum ege-szege inex of the n-vertex unicyclic graphs with a given iameter. By using another approach, we etermine the graph in U n, with minimum ege Szege inex in this paper. In orer to state our results, we nee more notations. Suppose that l 1, l an a are three nonnegative integers. Let P = P l1 +1 be a path on l 1 +1 vertices with a terminal vertex u an P = P l +1 be a path on l +1 vertices with a terminal vertex v. Let S = S a+1 be a star on a+1 vertices with center vertex w. We enote by P a l 1,l the tree obtaine from P, P an S by ientifying u, v an w to u, an call u the root vertex of P a l 1,l (see Fig. 1). For convenience, we write P a l 1 for P a l 1,0 (see Fig. 1). Note that Pa 0,0 = S a+1.
P l +1 P l1 +1 P l1 +1 a u a u P a l 1,l P a l 1 Fig.1 Graphs P a l 1,l an P a l 1 Let C 3 (P n,p ,S 1) be the graph obtaine from the cycle C 3 = v 1 v v 3 v 1 by ientifying the root vertex of P n with v 1 1, an ientifying one en vertex of P 1 +1 with v (see Fig. ). u u 0 u 1 1 w 1 w 1 w 0 u 0 u u 1 u 1 u n n 1 C 3 (P n 1,P 1 +1,S 1) T n,, Fig. Graphs C 3 (P n,p ,S 1) an T n,, Let G be a unicyclic graph of orer n with iameter. Then 1 n. If = 1, then G = C 3. If =, then G {C 4,C 3 (P1 0,S 1,S 1 )} for n = 4; G {C 5,C 3 (P1 1,S 1,S 1 )} for n = 5 an G = C 3 (P1 n 4,S 1,S 1 ) for n 6. For 1, it is not ifficult to etermine Sz e (G). Hence throughout the paper, we assume that n 6 an 3 n. Our main result is the following theorem. Theorem 1.1. Among the unicyclic graphs of orer n 6 with iameter for 3 n, C 3 (P n,p ,S 1) is the unique graph with minimum ege Szege inex. The rest of this paper is organize as follows. In Section, we present some useful lemmas. In Section 3, we establish some transformations of graphs which keep the iameter an the orer of the graphs, but ecrease the ege Szege inex of the graphs. In section 4, Theorem 1.1 is prove. Useful lemmas We first introuce a result useful for computing the ege Szege inex of a unicyclic graph. Let g 3 be an integer, an let C g = v 1 v v g v 1 be a cycle on g vertices. Let T 1,T,,T g be vertex-isjoint trees, an let the root vertex of T i be u i for 1 i g. Denote by C u 1,u,,u g T 1,T,,T g the unicyclic graph obtaine from C g by ientifying the root vertexu i oft i with v i for each 1 i g. If there is no confusion, we write C g (T 1,T,,T g ) for C u 1,u,,u g T 1,T,,T g. Any n-vertex unicyclic graph G with a g-cycle is of the form C g (T 1,T,,T g ), where g i=1 T i = n = g i=1 E(T i) +g. For v V(G), we efine D(v G) = (v,w G). For an integer g, efine δ(g) = w V(G) { 1, if g is o ; 0, if g is even. 3
Lemma.1. [9] Let G = C r (T 1,T,,T r ) with V(G) = n. Then Sz e (G) = Sz(G)+ r i=1 { D(v i T i ) n nr if r is o ; + r if r is even. The following are some lemmas which will be use in our proof. Lemma.. [7] Let G an G be the graphs shown as in Fig.3, where G consists of G 0 an G 1 with a common vertex u, an G consists of G 0 an G with a common vertex u. Then each of the followings hols: (i) For any ege e = w 1 w E(G 0 ) an 1 i, we have where m wi (e G) = m wi (e G 0 )+τ(u) E(G 1 ), τ(u) = (ii) If E(G 1 ) = E(G ), then m w1 (e G)m w (e G) = e=w 1 w E(G 0 ) { 1, u Nwi (e G 0 ) ; 0, otherwise. e=w 1 w E(G 0 ) m w1 (e G )m w (e G ). u u G 0 G 1 G 0 G G G Fig. 3. G an G in Lemma. Lemma.3. [7] Let G be a graph of orer n with a cycle C g = v 1 v v g v 1. Assume that G E(C g ) has exactly g components G 1,G,,G g, where G i is the component of G E(C g ) that contains v i for 1 i g. Let G = G g i= {wv i : w N Gi (v i )}+ g i= {wv 1 : w N Gi (v i )}. Then Sz e (G ) Sz e (G) with equality if an only if C g is an en-block, that is, G = G. Lemma.4. [5] If T is a tree with orer n, then Sz e (T) = Sz(T) (n 1). Note that if T is a tree, W e (T) = Sz e (T) an W(T) = Sz(T). The conclusion of Lemma.4 can also be written as W e (T) = W(T) (n 1). Let n 3 an n 1 be integers. Let P +1 = u 0 u 1 u be a path of orer +1 an T n,, be the tree obtaine from P +1 by attaching n 1 penent vertices to u (see Fig. ). Note that T n,, = P n 1,. Lemma.5. [10] Among the trees of orer n with iameter n, T n,, has minimum Wiener inex. 4
Lemma.6. [11] Let C g = v 1 v v g v 1 an i,j = (v i,v j C g ) for i,j {1,,,g}. (i) If g is an even number, (0,), if j g ; (,j 1,j +1, g,j 1,j +1) = (0,0), if j = g +1; (,0), if g + j g 1. (ii) If g is an o number, (0,), if j g 1 ; (0,1), if j = g+1 (,j 1,j +1, g,j 1,j +1) = ; (1,0), if j = g+3 ; (,0), if g+5 j g 1.
