Geometry Ch. 4.1 Triangle Classification by Angles and Side Lengths Mr. Deyo

Learning Target By the end of the period, students will classify triangles by their angle measures and side lengths as well as use triangle classification to find angle measures and side lengths. Students will demonstrate this by completing a graphic organizer and solving problems in a pair activity.

Storm Check (Think, Write, Discuss, Report) In this house of cards, how can we be sure to make isosceles triangles? Why are they important? We can be sure to make isosceles triangles because. The isosceles triangles are important because.

Notes: Recall that a triangle ( ) is a polygon with three sides. Triangles can be classified in two ways: by their angle measures or by their side lengths. Sides Angles Equilateral Equiangular (3 Equal Sides) (3 Equal Sides) Isosceles Right (2+ Equal Sides) (1 Right Angle) Scalene Obtuse (No Equal Sides) (1 Obtuse Angle) Acute (3 acute angles)

A B Problem A notes: Find the side lengths of JKL.

A B Problem A Check: Find the side lengths of JKL. Step 1 Find the value of x. Given. JK = KL Def. of segs. 4x 10.7 = 2x Substitute (4x 10.7) for JK and (2x + 6.3) for KL. 2x = 17.0 Add 10.7 and subtract 2x from both sides. Divide both sides by 2. x = 8.5 Step 2 Substitute 8.5 into the expressions to find the side lengths. JK = 4x 10.7 JK = 4(8.5) 10.7 JK = JK = 23.3 KL = 2x KL = 2(8.5)+6.3 KL = KL = 23.3 JL = 5x + 2 JL = 5(8.5) +2 JL = JL = 44.5

A B Problem B SOLVE!! Find the side lengths of the triangle.

A B Problem A Check: Find the side lengths of the triangle. Step 1 Find the value of x. 3x + 2 = 4x 7 2 = x 7 9 = x Step 2 Substitute 9 into the expressions to find the side lengths. 3x + 2 3(9) x 7 4(9) x (9)

A B Problem A notes: If the perimeter is 47, find x and the lengths of the three sides.

A B Problem A Check: If the perimeter is 47, find x and the lengths of the three sides. 2x x x + 8 = 47 Def. of Perimeter 6x + 17 = 47 Combine Like Terms 6x = 30 Sub. Pr. Of Equality x = 5 Div. Pr. Of Equality Substitute 5 for x. 2x + 6 x + 3 3x + 8 2(5) + 6 (5) + 3 3(5)

A B Problem B SOLVE!! Find the side lengths of the equilateral triangle.

A B Problem A Check: Find the side lengths of the triangle. Step 1 Find the value of x. 3y 4 = 2y + 3 y 4= 3 y = 7 Step 2 Substitute 7 into the expressions to find the side lengths. 3y 4 3(7) y + 3 2(7) y 18 5(7)

Storm Check (Think, Write, Discuss, Report) What is the difference between scalene, isosceles and equilateral triangles? A scalene triangle has. An isosceles triangle has. An equilateral triangle has. How can these differences help you create equations to solve? These differences help me create equations because.
