Integrating Gaming into Courseware Andrew Tietz, Art Director 1 Audience Polling: Poll #1 2 Page 1
What is Gameware? Game element has to prescribe to technological limitations of the courseware Has to be developed within confines of courseware budget. Game is designed to be modular for maximum reuse Traditional teaching methodologies still exist Uses small gaming vignettes throughout the courseware focused on specific objectives. Uses full game capability at end for assessment 3 Technological Limitations: Poll 2 4 Page 2
Addressing the delivery limitations Flash can only do rudimentary 3D graphics. Gameware must utilize 2D graphic engines for the game segments Younger audience expects 3D graphics to make game more immersive Our solution: Use rendered 3D graphics displayed in 2D engines. 3D Graphics much cheaper to produce today than when the various 2D engines were popular. Pre rendered 3D can be done more rapidly by employing game engine for real time rendering. High reuse of 3D assets possible 5 2D graphics engines Side Scroller Full Motion Video (FMV) Mode 7 Node Based Axonometric 6 Page 3
Side Scroller Background Uses 2d sprites for animations and scene objects Allows a users to move a character fluidly beyond the confines of a single screen The good Fast Low data requirements The bad Movement is limited to 4 directions (Up, Down, Left, Right) Low immersive quality Donkey Kong Country used rendered 3D in a side scroller engine 7 8 FMV Based games Background Popular in early 1990 s with the advent of the CD ROM and Laserdisc Considered a failure in video gaming Game types that used a FMV engine Rail Shooters Interactive movie adventures Music/dance games The good Allows for limitless graphic quality The bad Interactivity is greatly limited Requires heavy data transfer Wing Commander used many FMV sequences Page 4
Mode 7 3D effect using 2D Graphics Made popular by Super Nintendo System Can be achieved in Flash Useful for racing games Generally not useful for serious games Mario Kart uses Mode 7 engine for 3D effect on SNES 9 Node Based Background Employs a series of static nodes that a player navigates between by clicking on hotspots Myst 3 and 4 added panorama capabilities to each node to allow for 360 degree viewing in a 2d engine. A The Good Allows highly detailed graphics The Bad No movement shown between points Myst series is best example of node based game play 10 Page 5
Axonometric Form of graphics projection used to represent threedimensional objects in two dimensions. Sim City 1 4, Civ 1 3, Diablo 1 and 2 Good Allows reuse of sprites to build large complex environments with low file size Bad No perspective Scene can get repetative if tiles are overused 11 Sim City 4 large scale city rendering with Axonometric graphics Demo Time 12 Page 6
ARRT Purpose User is trained on using radiation detection equipment Uses Isometric graphics Live Demo 13 Triage Purpose Train Emergency First Aid Responders on triage tagging processes Uses Isometric and FMV graphics Live Demo Demo contains images of simulated human victims 14 Page 7
LLDR Purpose of the Training Provide an online recreation of the LLDR system for Joint Forward Observer Familiarization training Uses node based panorama engine Live Demo 15 IED Defeat Purpose of the training Train soldiers on how to indentify IED threats in an urban environment Uses Isometric and FMV graphics Live Demo 16 Page 8
CBRNE Purpose Train emergency response units on disaster management Uses Dimetric graphics Video Demo Demo created for customer to help support fielding this training Please mark status as green when video is done. 17 Q & A Contact: Andrew Tietz atietz@adayana.com 18 Page 9
