Commas Rule with some Comma Rules Commas can be confusing. Remembering a few basic rules can help! For the best performance of this presentation, open this slideshow to fullscreen view so that all applications and animations are fully engaged.

Objectives Both young and older writers usually commonly confused comma rules. Through will show you how to fix the following two scenarios: 1. Where to place a comma when combining two independent clauses (complete sentences) with a coordinating conjunction. 2. Where to place a comma when starting a sentence with an introductory phrase or dependent clause.

Step 1: Identifying Independent and Dependent Clauses In order to really understand WHEN to use a comma when combining clauses, you first have to determine whether the parts of the sentence you are combining are independent clauses or dependent clauses. Independent Clause: A part of the sentence that could stand on its own as sentence (contains subject and verb). Dependent Clause: A part of the sentence that CANNOT stand on its own as a sentence (is missing either a subject or a verb).

Try to identify whether the following clauses are independent or dependent. Then, click to see if you are correct! I ran into the store and bought some milk. Independent Clause (Contains both subject and verb.) Dependent Clause (Missing the subject- Depends on the subject from the previous clause.) (Contains both subject and verb.) I ran into the store, and I bought some milk. Did you notice? This sentence Independent Clause contains a comma before the conjunction. See Independent Clause Rule 1 for an explanation. (Contains both subject and verb.)

Rule 1: Use a comma between two independent clauses that are joined by a coordinating conjunction. An easy way to remember some coordinating conjunctions is to think of FANBOYS. Independent Clause (complete sentence), For And Nor But Independent Clause (complete sentence) COMMA Or Yet So Sally is going shopping today, and I will go with her. I really like country music, but I also like classical music. I am not feeling well, so I should make a doctor s appointment

Another Example: Combining Independent Clauses with a Coordinating Conjunction Coordinating Conjunction (FANBOYS) I wanted to knock on the glass, but I could not move. A comma is needed because this sentence combines two independent clauses with a FANBOYS conjunction ( but ). Independent Clause (contains both subject and verb- could stand alone as its own sentence.) Independent Clause- (contains both subject and verb- could stand alone as its own sentence.)

Still need more clarification? Watch the following video:

Rule 2: Use a comma between dependent and independent clauses if the dependent clause comes first. Dependent Clause (introductory phrase/incomplete sentence), COMMA Independent Clause (complete sentence) After school, let s go to Chipotle. Well, I would rather order a pizza. Sally, what would you like to order? After all of this comma instruction, I am starving!

Using a dependent clause before an independent clause. Over the past few years, I have been practicing my soccer skills. COMMA Dependent Clause (Missing the subject- Depends on the subject from the previous clause.) Independent Clause- (Contains both subject and verb.)

However... If you move the dependent clause to the end of the sentence, you DO NOT NEED a comma because the independent clause comes first. I have been practicing my soccer skills over the past few years. Independent Clause NO COMMA Dependent Clause

Still need more clarification? Watch the following video:

YOU TRY! Where should you place a comma? Read the sentence and guess. Then, click to see if you are correct. 1. I am a wife and I am a mother. Answer: I am a wife, and I am a mother. 2. I am a wife and a mother. The above sentence is correct. No comma is needed. 3. He was surrounded by fifty people yet he felt all alone. Answer: He was surrounded by fifty people, yet he felt all alone. 4. Under the pile of clothes we found his wallet. Answer: Under the pile of clothes, we found his wallet. 5. Before the movie starts let s get some popcorn. Answer: Before the movie starts, let s get some popcorn.
