The Universal Product Code (UPC), which labels items with barcodes, was introduced on April 9. It was a -digit code and its first use was in grocery stores to speed up the checkout process and to keep track of inventory. It was so successful that it quickly spread to other retail products. Over time, as its use spread worldwide, the UPC was found to be too restrictive. A new code extended the UPC to digits and was implemented by the European Article Numbering Association in December 9. It became known as EAN-. In essence, this added an extra digit at the beginning of the numbers, allowing the old code to still be readable by the barcode readers. This picture shows the -digit bar code on the back of a Nestlé Rolo chocolate bar. The bar code is 900. The first two digits represent the country that issued the code. The code for Australia is 9. Note that this is not necessarily the country of origin of the product. The following five digits show the company manufacturer identification code (Nestlé, in this case). The next group of five digits represents the product code (00 g Rolo chocolate bar, in this case). All the different products which Nestlé produces have a different product code. The last digit is a check digit to ensure that the code has been read correctly by the barcode reader. What is the company manufacturer code for Nestlé?
