2 KEY REQUIREMENTS: Petroleum Development Oman is the premier hydrocarbon exploration and production company in the Sultanate of Oman. It explores oil fields and develops them into productive assets by drilling wells and constructing and operating various hydrocarbon treatment and transport facilities. The company has some restricted areas where entry is not allowed. Main challenge in implementation: Risk of intruder disrupting operations due to theft of equipment and materials such as cables, or by causing damage to machinery, being very difficult to track and stop as these are sparse barren lands with extreme temperatures. Need to protect these remote installations and their equipment by creating a virtual fence through wireless equipment. Locating intruder movement inside the perimeter area through visual and motion capture devices, at any time of day or night. Ability to identify the intruders so that this acts as a deterrent against crime. SOLUTION: Essen RFID offered a specialized radio frequency based Integrated Perimeter Intruder Detection and Tracking System. Through this system, any intruder found within its range is tracked along with photo capture through camera and video recording. The system uses sophisticated object recognition technology that incorporates infrared for night time operations, microwave antenna, as well as long range wi-fi connectivity. IMPLEMENTATION: The tracking system is installed at remote pumping stations. The system consists of various technologies that complement each other and have been integrated to provide a solution at a level suitable for local requirements. It deploys high frequency Doppler radio waves with a constant 360 degree spin, employing laser range finders that send and return pulses that are detected to create a virtual map of the protected area. The device detects movement over a long distance from vehicles as well as humans in either running, walking or crawling postures. On top of the radar are mounted robotic pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras that have a 100 meter range with infrared capability for night time operations. An attached tracking controller gives physical co-ordinates for the cameras to zoom based on RF Doppler detection. The RF Doppler and cameras both operate using brushless motor technology for uninterrupted working. Also deployed is a microwave antenna that captures the intruder s cell ID location. The entire system uses Wi-Fi connectivity to send and relay video and data to a back-end server. 2

3 WORKING: The company s pumping station wells are spread over hundreds of kilometers of remote terrain and are largely unmanned. In order to automatically detect and track intrusion within these restricted areas at any time of day or night, the Integrated Intruder Detection and Tracking System is deployed to provide automatic perimeter security. The system is configured to operate at day or night in local extreme weather conditions. Process Flow: 1. Each pumping station well is fitted with a pole-mounted very high frequency RF Doppler device that detects moving or stationary objects appearing anywhere within a range of 100 meters to 300 meters. It constantly scans 360 degrees up to 100 meters a second, rotating and sending laser pulses and detecting return pulses to create a virtual map by measuring the distance from the device to all surrounding objects. 2. When an intruder enters within tracking range, the device intelligently detects meaningful change in the protected area that has occurred from vehicles or from human movements through running, walking or crawling, identifies it as a target and transmits an alert signal to the tracking controller device. 3. The controller calculates the intruder s physical coordinates and aims the pan-tilt-zoom camera that is mounted above the RF Doppler device, at the intruder. RF Doppler Pan-Tilt-Zoom Camera 3

4 4. The system is integrated with complete-angle pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras that have infrared night vision capability for 24-hour day-night operations. When the controller aims a camera at the intruder s co-ordinates, the camera s sensors detect the intruder s movements and automatically track him. The camera tilts and sets the angle to automatically capture photographs without any operator interaction. It also zooms in to capture detailed images. The system starts simultaneous recording of video footage of the intruder. 5. A microwave antenna attached to the system captures the intruder s cell ID location as having been physically present in a restricted area. This provides supplementary evidence and is also useful if the intruder s face is masked. 6. The system is fitted with a longrange Wi-Fi antenna that transmits video and data to a distance of 15 kilometers. This is used to send and relay data wirelessly over the remote terrain to the back-end server. Transmission begins as soon as there is detection alert and intruder tracking starts. Wi-Fi Antenna 7. The controller also sends alert data to the server if the laser beam pulses are stopped by shooting down the device or any such long-range attempt is made to disable monitoring. 8. The system also detects multiple intruders within range and simultaneously triggers tracking alerts. With a fully automated detection capability, the perimeter Intruder Detection and Tracking System removes any possibility of human error and quickly catches the intruder through photographs and videos that easily identify him.
