1 EDSGN-100 Section 15 Team #3 Camera Report A Kodak Single Use Camera is a prime example of a simple circuit and the recycling process for large industries. Disposable camera's have a prime industry for reuse because all of their products must be shipped to a processing plant to develop the film. The consumers do most of the recycling by default. It is up to Kodak to process these cameras, and determine which parts can be used for what, what parts need to be recycled, and what parts are replaced. Breaking that category down further, the larger casing for the camera's interior is composed of a thick black plastic, in which three pieces are held together by another plastic sticker coated with adhesive. The lenses are another classification of plastic which is clear. The view finder, under the lens category, is the thickest of the clear plastic pieces, the sight pieces are the thinnest, and the actual concave lens is the intermediary in terms of thickness. Also clear plastic, the angular covering over the flash is also clear plastic. The mechanical systems, which includes the shutter mechanism, and the winding and shutter activator, are all composed of plastic as well. The

2 shutter mechanism, and a few skeletal pieces of the winding and picture taking mechanism are also black plastic. Two of the gears used in winding the camera are made of equally thick grey plastic, and the button to take the picture is also grey. The only white piece is the thinnest of gears in the winding mechanism. Moving into the electrical component of the camera, a circuit board, with solders, and wires is standard. The materials used in these components are solder, fiberglass, copper (in the wire and the circuit board), glass, and a low pressure gas which, when stimulated, produces the light for the flash. A capacitor is also a component on the board, and one of those is made using two cylinders of metal, and an insulating dielectric layer. The first step to disassembling a single use camera is to remove the stickers on the top of the camera covering one of the tabs. There are tabs on both left and right sides of the camera, as well as on top in the middle. Push down on the tabs using fingers or a small screwdriver and remove the plastic backing. Now that the plastic back is removed we need to discharged the capacitor to avoid shock. Do this by touching the red wire on the top right hand side with the screwdriver. Next, remove the film canister on the right hand side as well as the winding mechanism above it. At this point you should be able to remove the plastic framing inside the camera that holds most of the other pieces. Gently separate the inside framing from both outer frames. Then, remove the springs that are holding the circuit board, shutter lens and apparatus in place. Next, remove the circuit board which is connected to the battery. Than, remove the view finder and the lenses. Now all other pieces should be easily removable by hand in any order. Make sure all pieces are broken down to their smallest individual components. Kodak Single Use Cameras are recycled at an extremely high rate. Every piece inside of a single use Kodak camera, barring the film, can be reused multiple times. However, when the pieces no longer work, they are replaced by new parts. All plastic pieces in Kodak cameras are recycled, while the rest of the parts are discarded into landfills. The camera's recycling rate is higher than most things in the U.S. because most of the camera is made from recycled camera bodies. After the camera is sent back to the collection facility, the camera is sent to Mexico where the different parts are divided into two areas; recycled and reused. The main recycled part is the outer body of the camera. This is because the outer body is made of plastic, which can be easily recycled. Kodak put a great amount of time designing this recycle/ reuse program, and believe that it is an enormous accomplishment. They are very proud of the system that they have build, because nothing is really wasted a large portion of the camera is either reused or recycled. Focusing on the production of more cameras and their recirculation, to improve the reuse of camera's parts an alternative outer casing can be used. Our thought process was if we remove the petroleum plastic outer casing and replace it with laminate cardboard, adequate structure can be maintained while more usable plastic can be collected and ground up for broken and/or damaged cameras. To clarify, the replaced and discarded plastic outer shell will be repurposed to create unrecyclable parts of the camera. This will increase the circulation of the cameras while reducing the footprint per camera. The cardboard casing that will replace the petroleum outer casing will be of a thicker variety with a certain degree of water proofing. This would ensure that the film inside would not be damaged by water to a certain anticipated degree, and that the camera will not be destroyed if crushed.
