2 GSA - origins A number of suppliers have agreed the need to market and promote GSM products and services to preserve and grow their markets in GSM as the de facto world digital cellular standard. Agreed as essential for future success of GSM. An initiative from industry:? preliminary discussions in Cannes (2/98)? Core Group formed to develop ideas Founders Meeting (6/98) decided to proceed Information, proposals and membership invitations distributed to GSM suppliers community worldwide 2

3 GSA - objectives To strengthen promotion of GSM world-wide and ensure its continuous growth and geographical spread as the de facto world digital cellular standard To promote GSM as the de facto basis for delivery of 3G mobile wideband multimedia services, within the context of global ITU IMT-2000 initiatives To enhance customer and service orientations of GSM To co-operate with, and complement other bodies working in the GSM field, e.g. GSM MoU, UMTS Forum, ETSI-SMG, ECTEL TMS 3

10 ECTEL TMS Influencing body on European regulatory developments: - membership comprises national trade associations Principally concerned with GSM terminal aspects:? terminal and network compatibility? type approval? GSM MoU Association Voluntary Conformance Scheme No regular activities or budget for promotion No overlap between GSA and ECTEL TMS Co-operation invited by GSA; now being considered 10

11 UMTS Forum Possible areas include: Reinforcement of key messages concerning 3G Timely supply of equipments for 3G Backwards compatibility Joint promotion 11
