As one of the leading vendors in wireless communications technology, Huawei launched a series of ac Wave 2 wireless access points (APs) and solutions to meet coverage requirements of different markets. Wall Plate Access Points AP2050DN/AP2050DN-E/AP2051DN/AP2051DN/E: Suitable for hotel rooms, student dorms, hospital wards, offices and other small and high density room scenarios. Access Point AP4050DN/AP4050DN-E/AP4051DN/AP4151DN: Suitable for medium and small businesses, airports, bus or train stations, stadiums, cafes, recreation centers, and other. business environment. Three-radio-band access point AP4051TN: Suitable for eclassrooms, conference rooms, and other environment with sudden large burst traffic. Tolly engineers evaluated Huawei access points performance and features in multiple scenarios and compared them with Cisco and Aruba devices. The Bottom Line 1 Huawei AP2050DN, AP2050DN-E, AP2051DN and AP2051DN-E supported 256 concurrent users per AP; Huawei AP4050DN, AP4051DN and AP4151DN supported 512 concurrent users per AP; AP4051TN supported 768 concurrent users per AP 2 Huawei AP4051TN supports three radios. 2 Test Results Office Environment Scenario Tests Tolly engineers simulated an office environment scenario in a room 16 meters long and 9.5 meters wide, and verified: load balancing, load balancing after stations (STA) roaming, video playing during movement of STAs, and edge throughput after automatic radio calibration of APs. See Figure 1 for the test environment. Huawei AP4050DN, AP4051DN and AP4151DN as well as Cisco Aironet 1832i and Aruba AP-305 were tested. In each test, Tolly engineers deployed four APs of the same model to cover the entire office environment scenario. 3 Multi-User Load Balancing The load balancing feature distributes stations (STAs) as evenly as possible to APs in the same load balancing group. This improves the system capacity and user experience. Tolly engineers placed 40 mobile phones randomly in the central area of the office environment. In each test, four tested APs (of the same model) were added to the same balancing group and configured to use the same SSID. After all the 40 mobile phones were connected to the SSID for 10 minutes, Tolly engineers checked the number of STAs on each AP to evaluate the load balancing capability of each AP. According to test results shown in Table 1, with the dynamic load balancing optimization, STAs were evenly distributed on each Huawei AP. Huawei's load balancing algorithm controlled the number of STAs connected to each AP, prevented a large number of STAs from connecting to a single AP, and could improve the capacity and quality of the entire network. Cisco and Aruba solutions distributed STAs less evenly than the Huawei solution in this test. 4 Multi-User Load Balancing after STA Roaming In an office scenario with multiple APs deployed, movements of STAs may cause STA roaming. Especially when a conference occurs, a large number of STAs may roam. Tolly engineers evaluated dynamic load balancing optimization of Huawei APs after STA roaming. Tolly engineers moved two mobile phones and verified that they roamed. After 10 minutes, engineers checked the number of STAs on each AP. According to test results shown in Table 2, Huawei APs performed dynamic load balancing optimization so loads were balanced on Huawei APs after STAs roamed. In the same scenario, Aruba did not dynamically adjust load balancing after STA roaming. 5 Video Playing During STA Movement A Tolly engineer played a 720p HD video on a mobile phone through Wi-Fi while walking along the path as shown in Figure 4, and checked whether lagging occurred. When Huawei and Aruba APs were used, the video played smoothly without lagging. However, with Cisco Aironet 1832i, the video lagged in some areas. 6 Edge Throughput After Automatic Radio Calibration Radio environments are ever changing. Radio calibration of APs allows for automatic monitoring, analysis, and adjustment of radios so that radio resources can be systematically and intelligently managed in real time. In this way, a wireless network can quickly adapt to radio environment changes, enabling the system to maintain the optimal network performance. In the office scenario, Tolly engineers used an Apple MacBook Pro to check the signal strength indicator (RSSI) at multiple points. Edge Throughput Test Environment With the Cisco Aironet 1832i AP, the client s RSSI was less than -65dBm. The signal was much better with the Huawei AP4050DN, AP4051DN and AP4151DN access points. Tolly engineer chose one edge location to evaluate single client performance. See Figure 6 for results. Note: Edge points are between APs. If the automatic calibration effect of APs is poor, signal at edge points will be low or the interference will be strong to affect client performance. 7 Access Restriction of Weak-signal STAs When a large number of STAs are connected to one AP channel, STAs share the air time of that AP channel. As a result, the network access quality of each STA drops. Weak-signal STAs may occupy the channel for a longer time to ensure their network access quality. As a result, network access of other STAs on the AP will be affected. To ensure network experience of online STAs, Huawei AP4050DN, AP4051DN and AP4151DN can deny access of weak-signal STAs. In Figure 7, the RSSI at the red point was about -85 dbm. Huawei AP4050DN, AP4051DN and AP4151DN were configured to deny access of STAs whose RSSIs were lower than 65 dbm. The RSSI Low Check feature was enabled on Cisco Aironet 1832i and the RSSI threshold was set to 65 dbm. The test result shows that the STA could not connect to Huawei APs, which means that Huawei APs could deny access of weaksignal STAs. The STA could still connect to the Cisco AP, which means that Cisco Aironet 1832i could not deny access of weak-signal STAs. 8 Voice Call Quality According to Huawei's description, Huawei adopts an application protocol identification and classification engine. This engine uses application awareness technology to identify packets of protocols (such as HTTP and RTP) by checking Layer 4 to Layer 7 information in the packets. This engine can significantly improve voice call quality of common voice services in the industry that use SIP and RTP and applications such as Skype for Business, QQ, and WeChat. Huawei supports QoS on the Access Controller (AC) and the Access Point (AP) while Cisco Aironet 1832i only supports QoS on the controller. In the test, Huawei and Aruba used the QoS function on the AP in the direct forwarding mode while Cisco used the QoS function on the controller in the tunnel forwarding mode. Test results showed that with background traffic, Huawei AP s voice quality was better than Cisco and Aruba s. MOS (Mean Opinion Score) is an important metric to judge voice quality. MOS score of an acceptable VoIP call is generally between 3.5 and 4.2 (higher is better). 2. Test was run with the 5GHz band, HT20 mode, channel 149 on 20 Mi Note smart phones. Every two phones had one VoIP call session. One laptop was used to generate 50Mbps TCP background traffic via the AP under test. 9 Standalone AP Tests This test involves the following Huawei AP models: 2x2 MIMO and 2 spatial streams wall plate AP: AP2050DN/AP2050DN-E; 2x2 MIMO and 2 spatial streams wall plate AP with smart antennas: AP2051DN/ AP2051DN-E; 2x2 MIMO and 2 spatial streams standard AP: AP4050DN/AP4050DN-E/AP4051DN/ AP4151DN. Test cases include the maximum number of STAs supported on a single AP, single-client performance, MU-MIMO performance, high-density video streaming, application recognition, non-wi-fi interference detection, traditional and cloud mode switching, Access Controller (AC) hot standby (HSB), dual PoE power supplies, smart antennas, 200m long distance PoE power, bluetooth positioning and Internet of Things (IoT) applications. User Capacity Huawei AP2050DN, AP2050DN-E, AP2051DN and AP2051DN-E supported 128 concurrent users on each radio and 256 concurrent users on each AP; Huawei AP4050DN, AP4050DN-E, AP4051DN and AP4151DN supported 256 concurrent users on each radio and 512 concurrent users on each AP; Huawei AP4051TN supported 256 concurrent users on each radio and 768 concurrent users on each AP; See Table 4 for results. 10 Maximum Performance 2x2 MIMO wall plate APs under test include Huawei AP2050DN, AP2050DN-E, AP2051DN and AP2051DN-E as well as Cisco 1815w, Ruckus H510 and Aruba AP-303H. One Apple MacBook Pro was used to test the single STA performance with the 5GHz radio. 2x2 MIMO standard APs under test include Huawei AP4050DN, AP4051DN and AP4151DN as well as Cisco Aironet 1832i. One Apple MacBook Pro was used to test the single STA performance with the 5GHz radio. Huawei AP4051TN and New H3C WA5530 support 3 radios each. The two 5GHz radios support 4x4 MIMO 4 spatial streams and 2x2 MIMO 2 spatial streams. Two Apple MacBook Pro laptops were used to test dual 5GHz radios performance. Comparing to the same level access points, Huawei AP s TCP performance was similar to Cisco s and was better than Aruba and New H3C s; Huawei AP s UDP performance was better than Cisco, Aruba and New H3C. See Figure 10 and 11 for detailed results. 11 Multi-client Performance In practice, one single AP typically has multiple clients connected. Tolly engineers tested each AP s aggregated throughput of all connected clients. Huawei wall plate AP and standard AP s multi-client throughput was higher than Ruckus and New H3C s. See Figure 13 for detailed results. 12 Smart Antennas Huawei AP2051DN and AP2051DN-E are 2x2: ac Wave 2 wall plate APs with smart antennas for precise coverage, low interference and high signal strength. Ruckus H510 has similar specifications. New H3C s counterpart AP WA5320H does not support smart antennas. AP Location Smart Antennas Test Environment 34 Meters Client Location Tolly engineers chose one non-line-of-sight client location (34 meters away from the AP with obstacles in between) to evaluate single client s signal strength and performance. Engineers changed the AP facing angle and ran 3 tests. Huawei AP2051DN and AP2051DN-E s performance was always better than Ruckus H510 and New H3C WA5320H s. See Table 5 for detailed results. 13 MU-MIMO Performance MU-MIMO is an important feature of the ac Wave 2 protocol and enables the WLAN AP to communicate with multiple STAs simultaneously on the 5GHz frequency band. Tolly engineers tested SU- MIMO and MU-MIMO performance of each AP model and verified the gains brought by the MU-MIMO feature. APs of different vendors provide similar SU- MIMO performance for 1x1 MIMO STAs. However, the MU-MIMO performance of Huawei APs is better than that of Cisco, Aruba and New H3C APs. See Figure 15 and 16 for detailed results. 14 High-Density Video Streaming In daily use, a large number of STAs may watch videos or browse web pages via the AP. Tolly engineers verified that each Huawei AP under test allowed a large number of users to concurrently watch videos without lagging or simultaneously browse web pages smoothly. Figure 17 shows the test environment and Table 6 lists the detailed test results. 15 Application Recognition Huawei AP2050DN, AP2050DN-E, AP4050DN, AP4051DN, AP4151DN and AP4051TN support application recognition on the AC and the AP. According to Cisco s documentation, Aironet 1832i is not in supported models of Cisco AP side application recognition. In this evaluation, Tolly engineers used the application recognition feature on the AC. Engineers selected 17 applications and websites, and tested the application recognition capabilities by using the client to access the Internet. Huawei s application recognition repository includes 1,600 applications. Huawei recognized all 17 applications/websites under test while Cisco missed 7 of them. See Table 7 for detailed results. 16 Interference Recognition Working with the Huawei AC, Huawei APs support spectrum analysis for non-wi-fi interference sources and can identify interference sources such as baby monitors, Bluetooth devices, 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz wireless radio transmitters, and microwave ovens. Test results show that Huawei AP2050DN, AP2050DN-E, AP4050DN, AP4051DN, AP4151DN and AP4051TN could accurately recognize the five types of interference sources mentioned above, while Cisco and Aruba APs could not or could not accurately identify some of them. See Table 8 for detailed results Traditional/Cloud Mode Switching Huawei AP2050DN, AP2050DN-E, AP2051DN, AP2051DN-E, AP4050DN, AP4051DN, AP4151DN and AP4051TN can work in traditional modes: Fit and Fat modes. Meanwhile, they can switch to the cloud mode without the need of hardware replacement. Tolly engineers verified that Huawei APs could go online, be managed, and transmit data in either traditional or cloud mode. PoE Out Huawei AP2051DN-E supported one PoE Out port to provide PoE power to an IP phone or an IoT device. 17 High Availability AC Hot Standby In the hot standby mode, the active and standby ACs back up related information in real time. During an active/standby switchover or switchback, STAs do not need to get authenticated again. Dual-system hot standby provides advantages such as fast switchover, small impact on services, and high availability. Tolly engineers performed a fast ping test and ran ping commands every 10 ms. The ping operation times out if no response is received within 10 ms. Tolly engineers verified the switchover and switchback time of ACs in direct forwarding mode and tunnel forwarding mode when the link between the AC and the switch was disconnected and when the active AC was powered off. If no packet was lost during the switchover, the switchover time was considered as shorter than 10 ms. If one packet was lost, the switchover time was considered as about 10 ms. If five to six packets were lost, the switchover time was considered as about 60 ms. In the direct forwarding mode, link failure and device failure s failover time was about 10 ms; in the tunnel forwarding mode, link and device failure s failover time was about 60 ms. See Table 9 for detailed results. Dual PoE Power Supplies To ensure stable network operation and facilitate future O&M, Huawei APs under test support dual PoE power supplies. For the Huawei AP4051TN, the AP could continue operating normally when one PoE link failed. For AP4051DN and AP4151DN, when one PoE link failed, clients need to login to the SSID again for proper use.
