Mobile Cloud Computing: Issues, Challenges and Future Trends In Partial fulfillment of the requirements for course CMPT 890 Presented by: Ahmed Abdel Moamen Agents Lab 1
Introduction It is widely believed that Cloud Computing (CC) is the latest big shift in the computing paradigm. Cloud computing not only provide services to classic personal computers, but it also affects and heavily impacts the mobile technology. When we introduce the concept of CC in mobile environment, the result is a new computing paradigm called Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC). The main contributions of this paper are: Present an overview about MCC including definition, architecture and applications Present a taxonomy of the key research areas in MCC Highlight the main directions for future work 2
Overview of Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC) Mobile Computing Cloud Computing Mobile Cloud Computing Limited resources Mobility problems Unreliable Connectivity On demand services Scalability Virtualization Access to cloud apps via mobile devices Data storage and processing are done on the cloud Definition: MCC is an infrastructure where both the data storage and the data processing happen outside of the mobile device. Mobile cloud applications move the computing power and data storage away from mobile devices and into the cloud. [Satyanarayanan et al., 2010]. 3
Mobile Devices in the Workforce In 2014, it is expected that 40% of all Internet traffic will be attributable to the smartphone [emarketer, 2012] Smartphone ownership rose by an annualized rate of 64% in 2Q-2012 [Comscore in Wall Street Journal, 2012] One in four Americans owns smartphone [Engadget, 2012] Apple Inc sold 20 million ipads in 2012 [Engadget, 2012] 4
MCC Architecture Mobile devices are connected to Internet via base stations Mobile users' requests and information are delivered to the cloud through the Internet. In the cloud, cloud controllers process the requests to provide the corresponding cloud services to mobile users. 5
Motivations and Challenges of MCC Motivations: Virtualization Usability and scalability Improved processing power and data storage Increased battery life Context-aware services Challenges: Unreliable connectivity Security and privacy issues The need for elastic applications 6
A taxonomy of existing approaches in MCC 7
1- Mobile Environment Approaches This table describes some key approaches that address the mobile environment issues in MCC Name Factor Description Virtual Compass [Banerjee et al., 2010] Hyrax [Marinelli, 2009] Localization Approach Faulttolerance Provide a peer-based localization system using short range signals (e.g., WiFi and Bluetooth) Provide fault-tolerance service by re-execution and redundancy [Rice et al. 2010] QoS Propose a power usage measurement framework to extend battery lifetime [Huerta-Canepa et al., 2010] Collaboration Scheme Propose a framework to overcome disconnection from the cloud 8
2- Cloud Environment Approaches This table describes some key approaches that address the cloud environment issues in MCC Name Factor Description E-Recall [Shen et al., 2010] Data access management Provide an efficient scheme to manage media resources on the cloud Cloudlet [Satyanarayanan et al., 2009] MAUI [Cuervo et al., 2010] Offloading Method Cost-Benefit Analysis Offload workload to a local cloud system (i.e., cloudlet) Construct cost/benefit optimization model to take the decision of offloading [Kumar et al., 2010] Application Partitioning Make program partitioning based on the estimation of the energy consumption 9
3- Application Models This table describes some key application models presented for MCC Name Model Description CloneCloud [Chun et al., 2011] Augmented Execution Replicate the whole smart phone image to the cloud MAUI [Cuervo et al., 2010] Elastic Application Developers annotate which methods can be offloaded for remote execution ISR [Satyanarayanan et al., 2005] Application Mobility Allow the application to move to other powerful machines, and then seamlessly resume work 10
4- Context Management Approaches This table describes some key approaches that use context information to provide useful services to mobile users Name Model Description [Klein et al., 2010] Service Provisioning Propose a framework for the use of context information to meet the application requirements MobiCloud [Dijiang et al., 2010] Context-aware Approach Use context information to facilitate risk assessment and routing decisions [La and Kim, 2010] Service Provisioning Present a framework for enabling context-aware mobile services provisioning 11
5- Security and Privacy Approaches This table describes some key approaches that address the security and privacy issues in MCC Name Model Description MobiCloud [Dijiang et al., 2010] [Zhang et al., 2009] Mobile cloud security Application Security Protect information belonging to mobile users by means of security isolation on the cloud Propose a solution for authentication between weblets running on the device and those on the cloud [Hyun et al., 2010] Privacy Enable mobile devices to securely store and retrieve their data in public cloud 12
Open and future research trends Low Bandwidth: Bandwidth limitation is still a big concern because the number of mobile and cloud users is dramatically increasing. Absence of Standards: There is a persistent need for open standards between different cloud computing service providers. Pricing: Both mobile service provider and cloud service provider have different services methods of payment and prices. 13
Conclusions MCC integrates cloud computing with the mobile environment to overcome the limitations of mobile devices. Although MCC is still in its infancy, it is expected to become the dominant model for mobile applications in the future. This paper presents a taxonomy of issues found in this area, and the approaches in which these issues have been tackled. We also present some open research problems in MCC along with the possible research directions in the evolution of MCC. 14
