-PO Technology Dr. Frank Effenberger Huawei Fellow HUAWEI TECHOLOIES CO., LTD.
Bandwidth rowth Promotes PO Development High-speed Internet(Actually a wide range of speeds) Video conference SDTV VOD File Sharing, Home Video Sharing/Streaming Multi-Player aming, Interactive Distance Learning HDTV / VOD 3D TV E-everything, cloud computing long term, symmetric (per sub) long term, asymmetric Upstream near term Mbps Downstream -PO will be necessary if bandwidth requirement of per end user beyond 100Mbps al access will evolve toward 500Mb/s~1b/s (long term) HUAWEI TECHOLOIES CO., LTD.
A short history of PO 1994: pi-po. 50 Mb/s, 1310nm bidirectional, circuit switched 1999: A/B-PO. 6/155 Mb/s, 1550nm down, 1310nm up, ATM-based 004: -PO..4/1/b/s, 1490nm down, 1310nm up, packet-based 009: -PO1. 10/.5b/s, 1577nm down, 170nm up, packet-based 014: -PO. 40+ capacity but how? (and when?) (and why?) HUAWEI TECHOLOIES CO., LTD. Page 3

Protocol and management of -PO Mainly, -PO s protocol (the TC layer), management (the OAM layer), and the service architecture (TR-156) is the same as X-PO1 (similar to -PO) X-PO1 OLT OMCI Control PO OLT OMCI Control Wavelength Control Traffic Manager Traffic Manager HUAWEI TECHOLOIES CO., LTD. Page 7
So it s a PO over DWDM, so what? Activation in multi-wavelength, PO is different from DWDM multi-operator, multi-vendor o mux on the OU side case is non-trivial o link engineering allowed Worst-worst-worst case assumed Interoperable specs required If OU is not calibrated, how can it learn without jamming others? Synchronized ranging windows? Extreme dynamic range OU s must have spectral purity The system to support DWBA? Downstream tuning is slow Upstream tuning medium TDMA is very fast Burst mode tunable lasers Power -> Temp -> Wavelength Very weak photon ranging? HUAWEI TECHOLOIES CO., LTD. Page 8

TWDM-PO Prototype System Mark II 4 OU wavelength management based on.multi protocol Integrated OLT transceiver in enhanced CFP module 3 Integrated TOSA/ROSA on PLC platform for CFP module 1 Low-cost tunable OU transceiver in SFP Innovations 1. Tunable OU with low-cost SFP transceiver;. 4x10 OLT transceiver with integrated EDFA 3. Integrated TOSA/ROSA on PLC platform 4. OU wavelength control based on.multi standard Achievements 1. Leading TWDM PO standard at FSA/ITU-T. Award-winning research deliverables 3. FSA Shanghai demo; Lab test at many Tier 1 4. ECOC PDP paper: World First TWDM PO Tcvr HUAWEI TECHOLOIES CO., LTD. Page 10
Markets to watch for driving -PO Large MDU and FTTdp (.fast) deployment MDU applications have high aggregate bandwidth for each OU Also a low sensitivity to optical interface costs (optics are shared) MDU and FTTdp are therefore a reasonable first step for PO systems Wireless backhaul and fronthaul Wireless demand is exploding, and 5 is coming In rural areas, 4 and 5 may become the defacto answer Effectively, this becomes FTTnode with wireless drops etwork rebuilds The main body of deployments are -PO and 1E-PO However, before those systems, there was B-PO This base of B-PO is nearing EOL, and will need replacement etwork extension First optical deployments took the easy ground There is still 50% of the territory uncovered but it tends to be less desirable Can next generation technologies help by more fiber sharing?
