11 Knowing the Keys Key Function Power Key Hold to turn on or off Airplane mode, or to power off. Press to switch your phone to Sleep mode. Press to wake up your phone. Home Key Press to return to the Home Screen from any application or screen. Hold to see Google search. Menu Key Back Key Volume Keys Press to see recently used applications. Press to go to the previous screen. Press or hold to turn the volume up or down. NOTE: You can change the positions of the Back Key and Menu Key. 12 Installing the SIM Card Power off your phone before installing or removing the SIM card. 1. Insert the tip of the eject tool into the hole on the SIM card tray. 2. Pull out the SIM card tray and place the SIM cards on the tray. Slot 1 supports a microsim and is the under side of the SIM tray. Slot 2 supports a nanosim and is the top side of the SIM tray. 12

13 The top side of the SIM tray can also house a microsd card but then SIM 2 cannot be used. NOTES: Place your micro-sim card on the Card Slot 1. Place your nano-sim card on the Card Slot 2. Slot 1 will only accept a micro-sim card, while the Card Slot 2 can either be a nano-sim card or microsdhc card, but not both together. Installing the microsdhc Card (Not Included) If a microsdhc card will be installed, then only the Main (micro-sim card) can be installed as the microsdhc card uses the same tray space as the nano-sim card. 1. Insert the tip of the tray eject tool into the hole on the microsdhc card tray. 2. Pull out the tray and place the card on the tray, as shown. 13

14 Then carefully install the tray back. Charging the Battery Your phone s battery should have enough power for the phone to turn on, find a signal, and make a few calls. You should fully charge the battery as soon as possible. WARNING! Use only ZTE-approved chargers and cables. The use of unapproved accessories could damage your phone or cause the battery to explode. CAUTION: Do not remove or change the built-in rechargeable battery in your phone by yourself. The battery can only be changed by ZTE or ZTE authorised service provider. 1. Connect the adapter to the charging jack. Ensure that the adapter is inserted in the correct direction. 14

15 2. Connect the charger to a standard AC power outlet. 3. Disconnect the charger when the battery is fully charged. NOTE: If the battery is extremely low, you may be unable to power on the phone even when it is being charged. In this case, try again after charging the phone for at least 20 minutes. Contact the customer service if you still cannot power on the phone after prolonged charging. Extending the Battery Life Active applications, screen brightness levels, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi usage and GPS functionality can drain your battery. You can follow the helpful tips below to conserve your battery power: Reduce the screen backlight time. Lower the screen brightness. 15

16 Turn auto-sync, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth off when not in use. Disable the GPS function when not in use. Most applications using this function will periodically query the GPS satellites for your current location; each query drains your battery. Powering On/Off Press and hold the Power Key to turn on your phone. To turn it off, press and hold the Power Key to open the options menu. Touch Power off > OK. Setting Up for the First Time When you first power on your phone after you purchase it or reset it to factory settings (see Settings Personal Backup and Reset), you need to do some settings before using it. Flick the language field to select the language and touch. Then follow the prompts to set up Wi-Fi, Google Account, Google location and other options. Locking/Unlocking the Screen and Keys Your phone allows you to quickly lock the screen and keys (put the phone into sleep mode) when not in use and to turn the screen back on and unlock it when you need it. 16

17 To lock the screen and keys: To quickly turn the screen off and lock the keys, press the Power Key. NOTE: To save battery power, the phone automatically turns off the screen after a certain period of time when you leave it idle. You will still be able to receive messages and calls while the phone screen is off. To unlock the screen and keys: 1. Press the Power Key to turn the screen on. 2. Touch and swipe up to unlock the screen. NOTE: If you have set an unlock pattern, PIN or password for your phone (see the chapter Personalizing Protecting Your Phone With Screen Locks), you ll need to draw the pattern or enter the PIN/password to unlock your screen. Using the Touch Screen Your phone s touch screen lets you control actions through a variety of touch gestures. Touch When you want to type using the onscreen keyboard, select onscreen items such as application and settings icons, or press onscreen buttons, simply touch them with your finger. 17

18 Touch and Hold To open the available options for an item (for example, a message or link in a Web page), touch and hold the item. Swipe or Slide To swipe or slide means to quickly drag your finger vertically or horizontally across the screen. Drag To drag, press and hold your finger with some pressure before you start to move your finger. While dragging, do not release your finger until you have reached the target position. Pinch In some apps (such as Maps, Browser, and Gallery), you can zoom in and out by placing two fingers on the screen at once and pinching them together (to zoom out) or spreading them apart (to zoom in). Rotate the screen For most screens, you can automatically change the screen orientation from portrait to landscape by turning the phone sideways. Getting to Know the Home Screen The home screen is the starting point for your phone s applications, functions, and menus. You can customize your home screen by adding application icons, shortcuts, folders, widgets, and more. Your home screen extends beyond the initial 18

19 screen. Swipe the screen left or right to display additional screens. Simply swipe left or right on the screen to see the extended home screens. 19

20 Personalizing Changing the System Language 1. Touch the Home Key > > Settings > Language & input > Language. 2. Select the language you need. Setting the Date and Time 1. Touch the Home Key > > Settings > Date & time. 2. Uncheck Automatic date & time and Automatic time zone if you want to set the date, time and time zone by yourself. 3. Set the date, time, time zone, and date/time format. Changing Ringtone and Notification Sound You can customize the default ringtone for incoming calls and the default notification sound quickly. 1. Touch the Home Key > > Settings >Sound & notification>. 2. Touch Phone ringtone or Default notification sound. 3. Scroll through the ringtone list and select the ringtone you want to use. 20

21 4. Touch OK. Adjusting Volume 1.Touch the Home Key > notification>. > Settings >Sound & 2.Drag the sliders to adjust the volume for each type of audio. NOTE: You can adjust the media volume when a media application is in use by pressing the Volume Up/Down Key. If no media application is active, press the Volume Up/Down Key to adjust ringtone volume (or the earpiece volume during a call). Applying New Wallpapers You can set the wallpaper for the Home Screen. 1. Press Home Key to return to the Home Screen. 2. Press and hold Home Screen and select WALLPAPERS. 3.Choose the image or animation you want to use as the wallpaper. Some cropping may be needed for Gallery images. 4.Touch Set wallpaper. Changing Screen Brightness 1.Touch the Home Key > > Settings > Display > Brightness level. 2.click next to the Adaptive brightness to turn it on to make 21

22 the phone adjust the screen brightness automatically, or drag the slider to adjust the brightness manually. Protecting Your Phone With Screen Locks You can protect your phone by creating a screen lock. When it is enabled, you need to touch and hold certain icon, look at the front camera, draw a pattern or enter a numeric PIN or a password to unlock the phone s screen and keys. 1.Touch the Home Key > > Settings > Security. 2.Touch Screen lock. 3.Touch Pattern, PIN or Password. If you touch Pattern, you re guided to create a pattern you must draw to unlock the screen. The first time you do this, a short tutorial about creating an unlock pattern appears. Then you re prompted to draw and redraw your own pattern. If you touch PIN or Password, you re prompted to set a numeric PIN or a password you must enter to unlock your screen. NOTE: Screen lock options are listed in the approximate order of the strength of their security, starting with None, which provide no security. A pattern provides minimal security, although it can be more convenient than the stronger options. 22

23 Protecting Your Phone With Encryption You can encrypt all the data on your phone: Google Accounts, application data, music and other media, downloaded information, and so on. If you do, you must enter a numeric PIN or a password each time you power on your phone. WARNING! Encryption is irreversible. The only way to revert to an unencrypted phone is to perform a factory data reset which erases all your data. Encryption provides additional protection in case your phone is stolen and may be required or recommended in some organizations. Consult your system administrator before turning it on. In many cases the PIN or password you set for encryption is controlled by the system administrator. Before turning on encryption, prepare as follows: Set a lock screen PIN or password. Charge the battery. Keep the phone connected to the charger. Schedule an hour or more for the encryption process. You must not interrupt it or you will lose some or all of your data. When you're ready to turn on encryption: 1.Touch the Home Key > > Settings > Security > Encrypt phone. 2.Read the information about encryption carefully. The Encrypt phone button is dimmed if your battery is not 23

24 charged or your phone is not plugged in. If you change your mind about encrypting your phone, touch the Back Key. WARNING! If you interrupt the encryption process, you will lose data. 3.Touch Encrypt phone. 4.Enter your lock screen PIN or password and touch Next. 5.Touch Encrypt phone again. The encryption process starts and displays its progress. Encryption can take an hour or more, during which time your phone may restart several times. When encryption is completed, you're prompted to enter your PIN or password. Subsequently you must enter your PIN or password each time you power on your phone in order to decrypt it. 24

25 Knowing the Basics Monitoring the Phone Status The status bar at the top of the home screen provides phone and service status icons on the right side. Below are some of the icons you may see. Flight mode Wi-Fi in use Wired headset connected Battery full Battery charging Signal strength Alarm set Ringer off Vibrate mode Bluetooth on Managing Notifications Notification Icons The status bar at the top of the home screen provides notification icons on the left. Below are some of the icons you may see. New SMS New MMS microsdhc card removed GPS on 25

26 New New Gmail message Missed call New Wi-Fi network detected Updates available USB connected Open/Close the Notification Panel Notifications report the arrival of new messages, calendar events, and alarms, as well as ongoing events, such as when you've configured your phone as a Wi-Fi hotspot. You can open the notification panel to view the details of notifications. To open the notification panel, swipe your finger down from the top of the screen. To close the notification panel, swipe your finger up from the bottom of the screen or touch the Back Key. Managing Shortcuts and Widgets Add Shortcuts 1.Touch the Home Key >. 2.Touch and hold a shortcut and drag it to the Home Screen. Add Widgets 1. Press Home Key to return to the Home Screen. 26

27 2. Press and hold Home Screen and select WIDGETS. 3.Touch and hold a widget and drag it to the Home Screen. Move Shortcuts or Widgets 1.Touch and hold a widget or shortcut on the Home Screen. 2.Drag it to the place you need. Remove Shortcuts or Widgets 1.Touch and hold a widget or shortcut on the Home Screen. 2.Drag it to Adjust Widget Size to remove it. 1.Touch and hold a widget on the Home Screen and then release it. 2.An outline appears around the widget. Drag the outline to resize the widget. NOTE: Not all widgets can be resized. Rearranging the Favorites Tray The Home Screen includes a customizable favorites tray at the bottom visible from all Home Screens. You can drag apps, shortcuts, folders, and other priority items in or out of the favorites tray for instant access from any Home Screen. 27

28 To remove items from the favorites tray: Touch and hold an item in the favorites tray and drag it out of the tray. To add items to the favorites tray: Touch and hold an item on the Home Screen and drag it into the favorites tray. If the favorites tray is full, you need to first remove an item from the tray. Entering Text You can enter text using the onscreen keyboard. Some apps open it automatically. In others, you open it by touching where you want to type. You can touch the Back Key to hide the onscreen keyboard. Change Input Methods 1.When you use the onscreen keyboard to enter text, the icon appears on the notification bar. 2.Open the notification panel 3.Select an input method you need. Android Keyboard The Android Keyboard provides a layout similar to a desktop computer keyboard. Turn the phone sideways and the keyboard 28

29 will change from portrait to landscape. The landscape keyboard is not supported in all applications. Touch the alphabetic keys to enter letters. Touch and hold some specific keys to enter associated accented letters or numbers. For example, to enter è, touch and hold and the available accented letters and number 3 appear. Then slide to choose è. Touch to use uppercase. Double-tap to lock uppercase. This key also changes to indicate the current case you are using: for lowercase, for uppercase, and when locked in uppercase. Touch to delete the text before the cursor. Touch to select numbers and symbols. You can then 29

30 touch to find more. Also, often used symbols are displayed above the keyboard. Touch to use Google s networked voice input. Google Voice Typing Google Voice typing uses the Google voice recognition service to convert speech to text. You must have a data connection on a mobile or Wi-Fi network to use it. 1. Flick down the status bar when entering text and touch Choose input method, and then select Google voice typing. Or touch to access the voice typing when you are using the Android Keyboard. 2. When you see the microphone image, speak what you want to type. 3. You can continue entering text to keep it or to delete it. NOTE: Say "comma," "period," "question mark," "exclamation mark," or "exclamation point" to enter punctuation. Input Settings Choose input settings by tapping > Settings > Language & input from the Home Screen. In the Keyboard & input methods section, you can set the default input method and choose the settings for input methods. 30

31 Connecting to Networks and Devices Connecting to Mobile Networks Select Network Operator 1. Touch the Home Key > > Settings > More > Cellular networks > Network operators. 2. Touch Search networks to search for all available networks. 3. Touch a network in the network list to register manually. You can also touch Choose automatically to select preferred network automatically. Select Preferred Network Mode 1. Touch the Home Key > > Settings > More > Cellular networks > Preferred networks. 2. Touch the network mode you would prefer the phone to connect with. Control Mobile Data Use To enable or disable data access: 31

32 1. Touch the Home Key > > Settings >Data usage. 2. Check to enable data access over the Cellular data. Clear the check box to disable data access. To get data services when roaming: 1. Touch the Home Key > > Settings > More > Cellular networks. 2. Check Data roaming. NOTE: Data roaming may incur significant roaming charges. Set Access Point Names To connect to the Internet you can use the default Access Point Names (APN). And if you want to add a new APN, please contact the service provider to get the necessary information. 1.Touch the Home Key > > Settings > More > Cellular networks > Access Point Names. 2.Touch. 3.Touch each item to enter the information you get from your service provider. 4.Touch the > Save to complete. NOTE: To set the APN to default settings, touch the default. > Reset to 32

33 Connecting to Wi-Fi Wi-Fi is a wireless networking technology that can provide Internet access at distances of up to 100 meters, depending on the Wi-Fi router and your surroundings. Turn Wi-Fi On and Connect to a Wi-Fi Network Network 1.Touch the Home Key > > Settings > Wi-Fi. 2.Slide the Wi-Fi switch to the ON position to turn on Wi-Fi. 3.Touch a network name to connect to it. 4.If the network is secured, enter the password and touch Connect. NOTE: Your phone automatically connects to previously used Wi-Fi networks when they are in range. Get Notified of Open Networks 1.Touch the Home Key > > Settings > Wi-Fi. 2.Slide the Wi-Fi switch to the ON position. 3.Touch the > Advanced. 4.Check Network notification. When Wi-Fi is on, you receive notifications in the Status bar when your phone detects an open Wi-Fi network. Uncheck the option to turn off notifications. 33

34 Add a Wi-Fi Network You can add a Wi-Fi network if the network does not broadcast its name (SSID) or add a Wi-Fi network when you are out of range. To connect to a secured network, you first need to get the security details from the network's administrator. 1. Touch the Home Key > > Settings > Wi-Fi. 2. Slide the Wi-Fi switch to the ON position. 3. Touch the >Add network. 4. Enter the network SSID (name). If necessary, enter security or other network configuration details. 5. Touch Save. Forget a Wi-Fi Network You can make your phone forget about the details of a Wi-Fi network that you added - for example, if you don t want the phone to connect to it automatically or if it is a network that you no longer use. 1. Touch the Home Key > > Settings > Wi-Fi. 2. Slide the Wi-Fi switch to the ON position. 3. Touch the Wi-Fi network name and then touch FORGET. Connect to a WPS Network WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) is a feature that makes it easy to 34

35 add your phone to access points which support WPS. You can use one of the following two methods to connect your phone to a wireless network using WPS. Method one: WPS button 1. Touch the Home Key > > Settings > Wi-Fi. 2. Slide the Wi-Fi switch to the ON position. 3. Touch the > Advanced > WPS Push Button. 4. Press the WPS button on the access point and the access point will recognize your phone and add it to the network. Method two: PIN number 1. Touch the Home Key > > Settings > Wi-Fi. 2. Slide the Wi-Fi switch to the ON position. 3. Touch the > Advanced > WPS Pin Entry. 4. The WPS Pin number displays on the screen. Enter the Pin number into the access point s setup page. After entering the Pin number, your phone automatically finds the access point and configures the connection. NOTE: For detailed information about the WPS feature of the access point, please refer to its user documents. 35

36 Adjust Advanced Wi-Fi Settings 1. Touch the Home Key > > Settings > Wi-Fi. 2. Touch the > Advanced to adjust the following settings. Network notification: Get notifications in the status bar when Wi-Fi is on and an open network is available. Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep: Set whether to keep Wi-Fi on in sleep mode. Scanning always available: Let Google s location service other apps scan for network, even when Wi-Fi is off. Install certificates: Install certificates from the memory card. MAC address: Check the MAC address. IP address: Check the phone s IP address. Connecting to Bluetooth Devices Bluetooth is a short-range wireless communication technology. Phones or other devices with Bluetooth capabilities can exchange information wirelessly within a distance of about 10 meters. The Bluetooth devices must be paired before the communication is performed. 36

37 Turn Bluetooth On/Off 1. Touch the Home Key > > Settings > Bluetooth. 2. Slide the Bluetooth switch to the ON or OFF position. When Bluetooth is on, the Change the Device Name icon will appear in the status bar. 1. Touch the Home Key > > Settings > Bluetooth. 2. Slide the Bluetooth switch to the ON position if Bluetooth is off. 3. Touch the > Rename this device. 4. Edit the name and touch RENAME. Pair With Another Bluetooth Device 1. Touch the Home Key > > Settings > Bluetooth. 2. Slide the Bluetooth switch to the ON position if Bluetooth is off. Your phone automatically scans for and displays the IDs of all available Bluetooth devices in range. You could touch Refresh if you want to scan again. 3. Touch the device you want to pair with. 4. Confirm that the Bluetooth passkeys are the same between the two devices and touch Pair. Alternately, enter a Bluetooth passkey and touch Pair. 37

38 Pairing is successfully completed when the other device accepts the connection or the same passkey is entered. NOTE: The Bluetooth passkey may be fixed for certain devices such as headsets and handsfree car kits. You can try entering 0000 or 1234 (the most common passkeys) or refer to the documents for that device. Send Data via Bluetooth 1. Open the appropriate application and select the file or item you want to share. 2. Select the option for sharing via Bluetooth. The method may vary by application and data type. 3. Touch a Bluetooth device the phone has paired with or wait for it to search for new devices and touch one of them. Receive Data via Bluetooth 1. Turn Bluetooth on before trying to receive data via Bluetooth. NOTE: If the phone has not been paired with the sending device, you may need to touch Bluetooth > [your phone s name] in Settings to keep the phone detectable through Bluetooth. 2. Flick down the status bar and touch. 3. Touch Accept to start receiving the data. Depending on your storage setting and whether a microsdhc card is installed, received files are stored automatically in a 38

39 dedicated folder (Bluetooth, for instance) in the phone storage or microsdhc directory. You can access them with the File Manager app. Received contacts (vcard files) are automatically imported to your contact list. Connecting to Your Computer via USB You can connect your phone to a computer with a USB cable and transfer music, pictures, and other files in both directions. Your phone stores these files in internal storage or on a removable microsdhc card. If you are using USB tethering, you must turn that off before you can use USB to transfer files between your phone and computer. Connect Your Phone to a Computer via USB 1. Connect your phone to the PC with a USB cable. 2. Open the Notification panel and touch (Connected as...). 3. Choose one of the following options: Charge only: Charge your phone via USB. Built-in CD-ROM: Select this option when features (Connect to PC software, Media device) enabled for the first time, or when they re unavailable. Media device (MTP): Lets you use the phone as USB storage and transfer files when it is connected to Windows PC or Mac. Camera (PTP): Lets you use camera software to transfer 39

40 pictures from phone to PC. MAC Users need to download and install Android File Transfer to enable MAC connectivity. Connect With Windows Media Player You can sync music on your phone and the computer installed with Windows Media Player. 1. Connect the phone with your computer via USB and choose Media device (MTP). 2. Open Windows Media Player and synchronize music files. Disconnect Your Phone From the Computer To disconnect the phone from the computer, simply unplug the USB cable when you re finished. Unmount the microsdhc Card If you need to remove the microsdhc card while the phone is on, you should unmount it first. 1. Touch the Home Key > > Settings > Storage. 2. Scroll down and touch Unmount SD card > OK. 3. Remove the microsdhc card from the phone. Erase microsdhc Card 1. Touch the Home Key > > Settings > Storage. 2. Scroll down the screen and touch Erase SD card > Erase SD 40

41 card > Erase everything. CAUTION: The formatting procedure erases all the data on the microsdhc card, after which the files CANNOT be retrieved. Sharing Your Mobile Data Connection You can share your phone s data capabilities through tethering or by activating the mobile hotspot feature to create a portable Wi-Fi hotspot. Share Your Mobile Data Connection via USB You can access the Internet on your computer via the USB tethering feature of your phone. The feature needs data connection on a mobile network and may result in data charges. NOTE: If your phone has a microsdhc card or USB storage, you can t mount it on your computer while USB tethered. 3. Connect your phone to your computer with a USB cable. 4. Touch the Home Key > > Settings > More > Tethering & portable hotspot. 5. Check USB tethering. A new network connection will be created on your computer. NOTE: To stop sharing your data connection, uncheck USB tethering or disconnect the USB cable. 41

42 Share Your Mobile Data Connection via Bluetooth If your computer can obtain an Internet connection via Bluetooth, you can configure your phone to share its mobile data connection with your computer. 1. Pair your phone with your computer via Bluetooth. 2. Configure your computer to obtain its network connection via Bluetooth. For more information, please see your computer's documentation. 3. Touch the Home Key > > Settings > More > Tethering & portable hotspot. 4. Check Bluetooth tethering. Your computer is now sharing your phone's data connection. NOTE: To stop sharing your data connection, uncheck Bluetooth tethering. Share Your Mobile Data Connection as a Wi-Fi Hotspot You can share your phone s data connection with other devices by turning your phone into a portable Wi-Fi hotspot. The feature needs data connection on a mobile network and may result in data charges. NOTE: When the portable Wi-Fi hotspot feature is enabled, you cannot 42

43 use your phone s applications to access the Internet via its Wi-Fi connection. You still remain connected to the Internet via your mobile data network. 1. Touch the Home Key > > Settings > More > Tethering & portable hotspot. 2. Slide the Wi-Fi hotspot switch to the ON position if Wi-Fi hotspot is off. After a moment, the phone starts broadcasting its Wi-Fi network name (SSID). 3. On another device, locate your phone via Wi-Fi and connect with it to start using the phone s mobile data. NOTE: To stop sharing your data connection, Slide the Wi-Fi hotspot switch to the OFF position. Rename or Secure Your Wi-Fi Hotspot You can change the name of your phone's Wi-Fi network (SSID) and secure your portable Wi-Fi hotspot. 1. Touch the Home Key > > Settings > More > Tethering & portable hotspot > Wi-Fi hotspot. 2. Touch Set up Wi-Fi hotspot. 3. Set your name and security options as follows: Security: Choose a security option: None (not 43

44 recommended) or WPA2 PSK (other users can access your mobile hotspot only if they enter the correct password). When you select WPA2 PSK, touch the Password field to edit the security password. Password: When you select WPA2 PSK, touch the Password field to edit the security password. 4. Touch Save to save your settings. Connecting to Virtual Private Networks Virtual private networks (VPNs) allow you to connect to the resources inside a secured local network. VPNs are commonly deployed by corporations, schools, and other institutions to let people access local network resources when not on campus, or when connected to a wireless network. Depending on the type of VPN you are using, you may be required to enter your login credentials or install security certificates before you can connect to your VPN. You can get this information from your network administrator. Add a VPN 1. Touch the Home Key > > Settings > More > VPN. 2. Touch and fill in the information provided by your network administrator. 3. Touch Save. The VPN is added to the list on the VPN screen. 44

45 Connect to a VPN 1. Touch the Home Key > > Settings > More > VPN. 2. Touch the VPN that you want to connect to. 3. When prompted, enter any requested credentials, and then touch Connect. When you are connected, the VPN connected icon appears in the Status bar. Modify a VPN 1. Touch the Home Key > > Settings > More > VPN. 2. Touch and hold the VPN that you want to modify. 3. Touch Edit profile and edit the VPN settings you want. 4. Touch Save. 45

46 Phone Calls You can place calls from the Phone app, the People app, or other apps or widgets that display contact information. Wherever you see a phone number, you can usually touch it to dial. Placing and Ending Calls Place a Call by Dialing 1. Touch the Home Key > > >. 2. In the dialer tab, enter the phone number with the on-screen keypad. Touch to delete incorrect digits. NOTE: As you enter digits, your phone searches for contacts that match. If you see the number you want to dial, touch it to place the call immediately without entering the rest of the number. 3. Touch the Phone icon below the keypad to dial. NOTE: To make an international call, touch and hold the 0 key to enter the plus (+) symbol. Next, enter the country code, followed by the city/area code and then the phone number. 46

47 End a Call During a call, touch on the screen. Answering or Rejecting Calls When you receive a phone call, the Incoming Call screen opens, displaying the Caller ID or the information about the caller that you've entered in People. You can answer or reject the call, or reject it with a text message. Answer a Call When you receive a phone call, drag to answer the call. NOTE: To silence the ringer before answering the call, press the Volume Keys up or down. Reject a Call When you receive a phone call, drag Working With the Call Log 47 to reject the call. The Call Log is a list of all the calls you've placed, received, or missed. It provides a convenient way to redial a number, return a call, or add a number to your Contacts. To open the call log, you can touch the RECENTS in the Phone app.

48 Place a Call From the Call Log 1. Open the call log. 2. Touch a number for more information about the call, or touch CALL BACK beside it to call back. Add a Call Log Number as a Contact 1. Open the call log. 2. Touch a number to view more call information. 3. Touch. 4. To add the number to an existing contact, touch a contact in the list. To add a new contact, touch Create new contact. Calling Your Contacts 1. Touch the Home Key > and then touch the Contacts tab. 2. Flick the screen up or down to view all your contacts with phone numbers. 3. Touch a contact or number to call it. Checking Voic If you have set the phone to divert calls to voic , callers can leave voic messages when they cannot reach you. Here s how to check the messages they left. 1. 49 2. Touch and hold in the dialer. If prompted, enter your voic password. 3. Follow the voice prompts to listen to and manage your voic messages. NOTE: To set your voic service, touch > Settings> Call settings > Voic in the dialer and touch the voic settings you want to change. For detailed information, please contact the service provider. Using Options During a Call During a call, you will see a number of onscreen options. Touch an option to select it. Touch to switch to the keypad when you need to enter a code (for example, the PIN for your voic or bank account) during the call. Touch to turn on or off the speaker. Touch to mute or unmute your microphone. Touch to hold or unhold the current call. Touch >Add call to make another call separately from the first call, which is put on hold. Touch to end the current call. WARNING! 49

50 Because of higher volume levels, do not place the phone near your ear during speakerphone use. Managing Multi-party Calls When the call waiting and three-way call features are available, you can switch between two calls or set up a conference call. NOTE: The call waiting and three-way call features need network support and may result in additional charges. Please contact your service provider for more information. Set Up a Conference Call With this feature, you can talk to two people at the same time. 1. On the dialer screen, enter a number and touch. 2. Once you have established the connection, touch >Add call and dial the second number. (This puts the first caller on hold.) 3. When you re connected to the second party, touch >Merge calls. If one of the people you called hangs up during your call, you and the remaining caller stay connected. If you initiated the call and are the first to hang up, all callers are disconnected. To end the conference call, touch. 50

Use Fixed Dialing Numbers Fixed Dialing Numbers (FDN) allows you to restrict outgoing calls to a limited set of phone numbers. 1. Touch the Home Key > > > > Settings > Call settings > Fixed Dialing Numbers. 2. The following options are available: Enable FDN: Input the PIN2 code to enable the FDN feature. Change PIN2: Change the PIN2 code for FDN access. FDN list: Manage the FDN list. NOTE: The PIN2 code is provided by your carrier. Entering an incorrect PIN2 code more times than allowed can get your SIM card locked. Contact the service provider for assistance. Set TTY Mode Select a TTY mode for your phone to work with a teletypewriter, or turn TTY off. 1. Touch the Home Key > > > > Settings > Call 52

53 settings > TTY mode. 2. Select one of the following options. Consult your teletypewriter manufacturer s manual if necessary. TTY Off: Users who can hear and talk can disable TTY support. TTY Full: Users who cannot talk or hear may use this mode to send and receive text messages through a TTY device. TTY HCO: Users who can hear, but cannot talk, may use this mode to listen to conversation of the other party and respond via text messages. TTY VCO: Users who can talk, but cannot hear, may use this mode to talk through the phone and receive responses via text messages. Bar Certain Calls Call barring feature allows you to forbid certain types of calls from your phone. 1. Touch the Home Key > > > > Settings > Call settings > Call Barring. 2. Set the restriction of specific types of calls from your phone. Forward Incoming Calls Call forwarding feature allows you to forward your incoming calls to another phone number. 1. Touch the Home Key > > > > Settings > Call settings > Call forwarding. 53

54 2. Touch an available option ( Always forward, When busy, When unanswered, or When unreachable) to enable it. Other Options 1. Touch the Home Key > > > > Settings > Call settings > Additional settings. 2. Touch Caller ID to choose whether your number is displayed when someone receives your outgoing call. Or check Call waiting to get notified of incoming calls during a call. NOTE: Please contact the service provider to check whether the caller ID and call waiting features are available. 54

55 People You can put contacts on your phone and synchronize them with the contacts in your Google account or other accounts that support contact syncing. To see your contacts, touch the Home Key> >. From there, you can touch the tabs on the top of the screen to quickly switch to the ALL CONTACTS or FAVORITES. Checking Contact Details 1. Touch the Home Key > > and touch the all contacts to access your contact list. 2. Scroll through the list to view all your contacts. 3. Touch a contact to view its details. NOTE: If you have a lot of contacts stored, you'll see a slider when you touch the right side of the screen. To go directly to a letter, touch and hold the slider and drag it to a letter. Adding a New Contact 1. Touch the Home Key > > and touch the all contacts tab. 2. Touch to add a new contact. 3. Touch the account field near the top of the screen to choose 55

56 where to save the contact. If a sync account is selected, the contacts will be synced automatically with your account online. 4. Enter the contact name, phone numbers, addresses, and other information. 5. Touch Add new contact to save the contact. Setting Up Your Own Profile You can create your own name card in your phone. 1. Touch the Home Key > > and touch the all contacts. 2. Touch Set up my profile or your name, whichever is at the top of the contact list. 3. Edit your profile information and touch Add new contact. Importing, Exporting, and Sharing Contacts You can import/export contacts from/to your SIM or microsdhc card. This is especially useful when you need to transfer contacts between different devices. You can also quickly share your contacts using Bluetooth, , Messages, etc. Import Contacts From the SIM Card 1. Touch the Home Key > >. 56

57 2. Touch the > Import/Export. 3. Select an account in which to save the contacts. 4. Touch to select the contacts you need and then touch OK. Import Contacts From the microsdhc Card 1. Touch the Home Key > >. 2. Touch the > Import/export > Phone storage. 3. Select an account in which to save the contacts. 4. Select the vcard file(s) in the microsdhc card and touch OK. Export Contacts to the SIM Card 1. Touch the Home Key > >. 2. Touch the > Import/export. 3.Touch to select the contacts you need and then touch OK. Export Contacts to the microsdhc Card 1. Touch the Home Key > > 2. Touch the > Import/export > Phone storage. 3. The phone will prompt you with the name of the vcard file. Touch OK to create the file on the microsdhc card. Share Contacts 1. Touch the Home Key > > and touch the all contacts tab. 57

59 Messaging You can use Messaging to exchange text messages (SMS) and multimedia messages (MMS). Opening the Messaging Screen Touch in the Home Screen and select Messaging. The Messaging screen opens where you can create a new message, search for messages, or open an ongoing message thread. Touch to write a new text or multimedia message. Touch to search for a message using keywords. Touch an existing message thread to open the conversation you ve had with a certain number. Sending a Message 1. On the Messages screen, touch at the top. 2. Add recipients by one of the following ways. Touch the Type name or number field and manually enter the recipient s number or the contact name. If the phone presents a few suggestions, touch the one you want to add. Select recipients from your contacts by touching. 3. Touch the Type text message field and enter the content of 59

60 your message. 4. If you want to send a multimedia message, touch the > Add subject to add a message subject or touch the paper clip icon to attach a file or a slideshow to the message. 5. Touch. NOTE: You can also include addresses as recipients for multimedia messages. NOTE: Do not add a message subject or any attachment if you want to send a text message. Otherwise you may be charged for a multimedia message. Replying to a Message Messages you receive are appended to existing threads for the same number. If the new message comes from a new number, a new thread is created. 1. On the Messages screen, touch the thread that has the message you want to reply to. 2. Type your reply in the text box at the bottom. You can touch the attach icon if you want to reply with an MMS. 3. Touch. 60

61 Forwarding a Message 1. On the Messages screen, touch the thread that has the message you want to forward. 2. Touch the message. 3. Touch Forward in the menu that opens. 4. Enter a recipient for the message and edit the content if you want. 5. Touch. Copying a Message You can copy text messages in the phone storage to the SIM card, or vice versa. To copy a text message from the phone to the SIM card, touch the message and select Save messages to SIM card. To copy a text message from the SIM card to the phone, touch the in the Messages screen and select Settings >Text Message(SMS) > Manage SIM card messages. Then touch a message and select Copy to phone memory. Changing Message Settings Touch the > Settings in the Messages screen to change Messages settings. 61

62 Calendar Calendar on the phone works with the web-based Google Calendar service for creating and managing events, meetings, and appointments. It also works with the Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync calendar once you sign into your Exchange account on the phone. To open Calendar, touch in the Home Screen and select Calendar. Viewing Your Calendars and Events Select Visible Calendars 1. Open the Calendar app. 2. Touch the > Calendars to display. 3. In the new screen, touch the calendars to check the calendars you want to see or uncheck the calendars you d like to hide. Events from hidden calendars are not shown in the Calendar app. Change Calendar Views You can view your calendars in different forms. The app offers four views: Day, Week, Month and Agenda. To change calendar views, touch the time period shown at the 62

63 top left and select the view you prefer. You can also change to Day view from Month view by touching any day in the grid. In Month view, swipe vertically to see earlier months and later months. In Week or Day view, swipe horizontally to see earlier weeks/days and later weeks/days. When you are viewing earlier or later days, weeks, or months, touch at the top to quickly switch to today. View Event Details In Agenda, Day, or Week view, touch an event to view its details. In Month view, touch a day to switch to Day view. Then touch an event to view its details. 63

64 Creating an Event 1. In any Calendar view, touch > New event to open an event details screen for a new event. You can also touch a spot in Day or Week view twice to add an event to that time spot. 2. Add details about the event. Enter a name, location, time span, and other additional details about the event. NOTE: If you have more than one calendar, you can choose the calendar to which to add the event by touching the current calendar above the Event name box. 3. Touch DONE at the top of the screen to save the new event. Editing or Deleting an Event 1. Find the event you want to edit or delete. 2. Open its details screen (see Viewing Your Calendars and Events View Event Details in this chapter). 3. Do one of the following as you need. To do Edit the event, touch at the top of the screen. Touch DONE to save your changes. Delete the event, touch and then touch OK. 64

65 Changing Calendar Settings To change Calendar settings, open a Calendar view (Day, Week, Month, or Agenda) and touch the > Settings. Browser Use Browser to view web pages and search for information. Opening the Browser Touch in the Home Screen and select Browser to start this function. The last web page you were viewing is displayed. If you have not used Browser recently, your home page opens. Browser also opens when you touch a web link - for example, in an or a text message. Open a Web Page or Search the Web 1.Open the Browser app. 2.Touch the address box at the top of the web page. 3.Enter the address (URL) of a web page. Or, enter terms you want to search for. 4.Touch a URL or search suggestion to open the web page or search results. NOTE: 65

66 Touch the X at the top of the address box if you want to stop opening the page. Downloading Files Touch and hold an image or a link to a file or to another webpage. In the menu that opens, touch Save image or Save link. The downloaded files are saved to your phone or the memory card. You can view or open them in the Downloads app ( > Downloads ). Changing Browser Settings You can configure a number of Browser settings to customize the way you browse the web, including several that you can use to control your privacy. To open the Browser settings screen, touch the > Settings. Camera You can use your phone to take photos and record videos. Photos and videos are stored on the phone s memory card or in the phone s internal storage. You can copy them to your 66

67 computer or access them in the Gallery app. Taking Pictures with Your Camera Your phone has camera function. Open it by pressing Home Key > > Camera. Tap to take a shot. To view it, just tap the picture in the right corner of the screen. NOTE: Before taking a picture, click the corresponding icon on camera screen to complete the camera-related settings. Shooting Video with Your Camcorder Open the camcorder by pressing Home Key > > Camera > tap. Then tap to start shooting, and tap to stop. Select the picture in the right corner of the screen to view the video you ve just shot. 67

68 Gallery Opening Gallery Touch in the Home Screen and select Gallery to view albums of your pictures and videos. Working With Albums When you open Gallery, all pictures and videos on your phone are displayed in a number of albums. To view album contents: Touch an album to view the pictures and videos it contains. To share albums, pictures, or videos: 1. Touch and hold an item in the Albums view to select an album, after you open an album, select a picture or a video. 2. Touch more items that you want to share. 3. Touch and select how you want to share the items. To delete albums: 1. Touch and hold an album until it is selected. 2. Touch more albums that you want to delete. 3. Touch > Delete> OK. 68

69 Working With Pictures Touch a picture in an album to view the picture in full screen. Double-touch the picture, or pinch two fingers together or spread them apart to zoom out or in. Copy From a Computer 1.Connect your phone and the computer with a USB cable. 2.Touch Media device (MTP) (if supported on the PC) to browse the files in the phone storage and on the microsdhc card. 3.Copy the music file from the PC and paste it to the phone storage or microsdhc card. Download From the Internet You can download music files when browsing web pages. See Downloading Files. Receive via Bluetooth You can receive music files from other devices via Bluetooth. 71

73 FM Radio With the FM radio, you can search for radio channels, listen to them, and save them on your phone. Note that the quality of the radio broadcast depends on the coverage of the radio station in your area. The wired headset that comes with your phone works as an antenna, so always connect the headset when using the radio. When you receive an incoming call while listening to the radio, the radio will be turned off. Scanning and Saving Channels 1. Plug in a wired headset and open FM Radio. 2. Touch > Search. All previously saved channels will be removed. Listening to FM Radio 1. Touch in the Home Screen and select FM Radio while the headset is connected. 2. Touch the > Channel list. 3. Touch one of the saved channels. You can also touch or to switch to other channels. NOTE: 73

Calculator Touch in the Home Screen and select Calculator. NOTE: Swipe left or right to switch between different panels. Chrome Use Google Chrome to browse the Internet. Chrome on your phone can sync bookmarks, browsing history, and opened tabs from your Google account. Clock Set a New Alarm 1. Touch in the Home Screen and select Clock. 76

Touch at the bottom to add a new city or country. Stopwatch and Countdown 1. Touch / in the Clock app to use the countdown clock or stopwatch. 2. Countdown allows you to set a time and count down to zero, while Stopwatch allows you to record lap times. Downloads The Downloads app keeps a record of the files you have downloaded using the Browser, . 77

The folders are organized by category, phone storage and the memory card storage. Touch folders and files to access stored items. Touch Phone storage / SD Card > to create a new folder in the current directory. System Updates Touch in the Home Screen and select System Updates. Erase SD card: Erase all data on your memory card and prepare it for use with your phone. Battery Check how much power remains for the battery and what has been using the battery. Hard Key You can exchange the positions of the Back Key and Menu Key. In the Settings app, touch Hard Key and select one case. Apps See apps installed on your phone and manage them. 81

98 Normal Use Position When placing or receiving a phone call, hold your phone to your ear, with the bottom toward your mouth. Air Bags Do not place a phone in the area over an air bag or in the air bag deployment area as an airbag inflates with great force and serious injury could result. Store the phone safely before driving your vehicle. Seizures/Blackouts The phone can produce a bright or flashing light. A small percentage of people may be susceptible to blackouts or seizures (even if they have never had one before) when exposed to flashing lights or light patterns such as when playing games or watching video. To reduce the risk of blackouts or seizures, you can use your phone in a well lit room and take frequent breaks. Emergency Calls This phone, like any wireless phone, operates using radio signals, which cannot guarantee connection in all conditions. Therefore, you should not rely solely on any wireless phone for emergency communications. Loud Noise This phone is capable of producing loud noises, which may damage your hearing. Turn down the volume before using headphones, Bluetooth headsets or other audio devices. Phone Heating Your phone may become warm during charging and during normal use. Electrical Safety Accessories Use only approved accessories. Do not connect with incompatible products or accessories. 99

Faulty and Damaged Products Do not attempt to disassemble the phone or its accessories. Only qualified personnel can service or repair the phone or its accessories. If your phone (or its accessories) has been punctured, or subjected to a severe fall, do not use it until you have taken it to be checked at an authorized service center. Radio Frequency Interference General Statement on Interference Care must be taken when using the phone in close proximity to personal medical devices, such as pacemakers and hearing aids. Please consult your doctor and the device manufacturer to determine if operation of your phone may interfere with the operation of your medical device. 100

101 Pacemakers Pacemaker manufacturers recommend that a minimum separation of 15 cm be maintained between a mobile phone and a pacemaker to avoid potential interference with the pacemaker. To achieve this, use the phone on the opposite ear to your pacemaker and do not carry it in a breast pocket. Hearing Aids People with hearing aids or other cochlear implants may experience interfering noises when using wireless devices or when one is nearby. The level of interference will depend on the type of hearing device and the distance from the interference source, increasing the separation between them may reduce the interference. You may also consult your hearing aid manufacturer to discuss alternatives. Medical Equipment Switch off your wireless device when requested to do so in hospitals, clinics or health care facilities. These requests are designed to prevent possible interference with sensitive medical equipment. Aircraft Switch off your wireless device whenever you are instructed to do so by airport or airline staff. 101

102 Consult the airline staff about the use of wireless devices on board the aircraft and enable the airplane mode of your phone when boarding an aircraft. Interference in Vehicles Please note that because of possible interference to electronic equipment, some vehicle manufacturers forbid the use of mobile phones in their vehicles unless a hands-free kit with an external antenna is included in the installation. Explosive Environments Gas Stations and Explosive Atmospheres In locations with potentially explosive atmospheres, obey all posted signs to turn off wireless devices such as your phone or other radio equipment. Areas with potentially explosive atmospheres include fueling areas, below decks on boats, fuel or chemical transfer or storage facilities, areas where the air contains chemicals or particles, such as grain, dust, or metal powders. Blasting Caps and Areas Power off your mobile phone or wireless device when in a blasting area or in areas posted power off two-way radios or electronic devices to avoid interfering with blasting operations. 102

Set up your device When you first turn on your phone or tablet, you ll see a Welcome screen. Choose the language you want and touch the arrow to continue. IMPORTANT: To complete the setup process, it s best to have a Wi-Fi connection. When prompted, sign in with your Google Account or create one at that time. Signing in lets you immediately access everything associated with your Google Account, like Gmail. If you prefer, you can skip this step and create an account later. TIP: If you have another Android device, Tap & Go lets you quickly set up a new device just by tapping it to your other one. When you sign in, you can easily get all the apps you ve purchased on Google Play onto your new device. All the , contacts, calendar events, and other data associated with that account are automatically synced with your device. For example, if you change a friend s phone number on your phone, that change also appears on your tablet and on any com puters where you re signed in to your Google Account. If you have multiple Google Accounts, you can add others later from Settings > Personal > Accounts. You can also add guest users in Settings > Device > Users. Make yourself at home After you finish setting up your device, the Home screen appears for the first time. Here, you can add app icons and widgets (an at a-glance view of an app s most important information) to your Home screens to easily find them. To move between Home screens, swipe left or right. Cellular data: See cellular usage data and turn it on or off. Airplane mode: Turn airplane mode on or off. Auto-rotate: Lock your device s orientation in portrait or landscape mode. On a Nexus 5, Quick Settings look like this: Open the main Settings app by touching right. Settings in the top On tablets, you can also turn Auto Rotate on or off from Quick Settings, to lock or unlock automatic screen rotation. Manage battery life The status bar shows how much battery you have left, but you can also see the exact percentage and approximate time of bat tery life remaining. When you re running low, Android s battery saver conserves your battery power so you can still make calls and send SMS (text) messages. To turn it on, go to Settings > Battery > Battery saver. For more information, visit Manage battery life. Get around At the bottom of every Home screen you ll find the Favorites tray: another quick way to get to your apps. To open an app, touch it. To drag an app in or out of the Favorites tray or anywhere else on a Home screen, touch & hold it, then move it with your finger where you want it. 117 Overview Opens a list of thumbnail images of screens you ve worked with recently. To open one, touch it. To remove a screen from the list, swipe it left or right or touch on the X. Some apps hide these buttons temporarily, or fade them to small dots in the same position. To bring them back, touch the dots, touch the screen in the middle, or swipe up from the bottom. Google Play edition navigation buttons Some Google Play edition devices have two or three buttons just below the screen. These could be physical buttons or buttons that only appear when you touch below the screen. Menu: This button opens options depending on the screen you re on. Home: Opens Home. If you re viewing a left or right Home screen, it opens the main Home screen. If you have set up Google Now, you can also touch & hold this button to open Google Now. Back: Opens the previous screen you were working in, even if it was in a different app. Once you back up to the Home screen, you can t go back any further in your history. Menus Many screens in Apps and in Settings include a Menu icon at the top right of the screen. Touch it to explore additional options, including Help and Settings. 118 Organize your Home screens On Nexus 5, 6, and 9: To change your wallpaper, add a widget, adjust Search set tings, or change screen order, touch & hold the background of any Home screen. You can have any number of Home screens to the right. To add a new screen, swipe to the rightmost screen and drag an app or widget to the right edge. The screen to the left of the main Home screen is reserved for Google Now, and is available only when Google Now is turned on. To create a folder, slide one icon quickly on top of another. To name or rename a folder, open it and touch its name. To change the wallpaper: 1. Touch & hold the background, then touch Wallpapers. 2. Swipe right to left to choose a wallpaper image. Or choose an image from your Photos, Downloads or Drive. To add an app icon to a Home screen: 1. Go to the Home screen where you want to place the app. 2. Touch All Apps. 3. Touch & hold an item for a moment and then, without lifting your finger, move your finger on the screen until you reach the target position. You can move apps around on the Home screen. Swipe or slide. Quickly move your finger across the surface of the screen, without pausing when you first touch (so you don t drag something instead). Slide a Home screen left or right to view the other Home screens. Double-tap. Tap quickly twice on a map or image to zoom in and out. Scale. 122 2 Essentials Google Now Google Now is about getting you just the right information, at just the right time. It tells you today s weather before you start your day, how much traffic to expect before you leave for work, and even your favorite team s score while they re playing. For example, here s a Google Now card that appears when you re about to start your commute: ANDROID QUICK START GUIDE ESSENTIALS 15

123 After you start using Google Now, you don t need to do anything else. If you like, you can fine-tune some settings, but Google Now doesn t need any elaborate setup. How it works To know when to show information you ll find useful, Google Now uses contextual data from your device and from other Google products, plus data from third-party products that you allow Google Now to access. For example, if you have an appointment in Google Calendar that includes an address, Google Now can check traffic and suggest when to leave. When you decide to use Google Now, you re also turning on Loca tion Reporting and Location History: Location Reporting allows Google to periodically store and use your device s most recent location data in connection with your Google Account. Location Reporting is a per-device setting. Location History allows Google to store a history of your location data from all devices where you re logged into your Google Account and have turned on Location Reporting. You can control how Google Now uses your current location. To view the relevant settings, go to Settings > Personal > Loca tion. When location services are turned on for your account on a given device, certain apps can use them to give you more relevant information, such as nearby restaurants or commute traffic. 124 Try it You have a chance to turn on Google Now when you first set up your device. You can also turn it on or off at any time: 1. Touch & hold any empty space on your Home screen. 2. Go to Settings > Google Now. To open Google Now after you turn it on, on Nexus 5, 6, and 9, swipe up from the Home button. Updates appear in the form of Google Now cards. When you don t need a card anymore, swipe it from left to right. Swiping from right to left returns you to the main Home screen. When you want to see more cards, touch More at the bottom of the screen. TIP: On Nexus 4 and 7, to open Google Now, swipe to the leftmost Home screen. To adjust the way certain cards get updated: Manage reminders: From the Menu at the top left of the screen, touch Reminders. Request updates for your sports teams, stocks, and more: From the Menu, touch Customize. Customize other updates: At the top right of each card, touch the three dots. 125 What you can ask Google to do for you When you use Google Now, you can speak to your device to search, get directions, and create reminders. For example, say Ok Google, do I need an umbrella tomorrow? to see if there s rain in the weather forecast. To see other examples of what you can say, visit Ok Google and voice search. You can say most of these examples in English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Spanish, and Brazilian Portuguese, but some examples aren t available in every language. If you want to say Ok Google in languages other than English, you also need to change the main language on your device. Visit Change your language on Google. Turn Ok Google on or off You can start a search or action by saying Ok Google. To turn it off or on, open Google Now or the Google app and touch Menu> Settings > Voice > OK Google detection. Display Change the display settings on your device by following these steps: 1. Go to Settings > Device > Display. 2. Choose from the following settings. Some of these settings may vary by your device and version of Android. All can affect battery life. See Manage battery life on page 8 for more information. Brightness level: Move the slider to set the brightness level on your device. ANDROID QUICK START GUIDE ESSENTIALS 18

126 Adaptive brightness: Turn on adaptive brightness to au tomatically optimize the brightness level on your device based on the available light around you. Adaptive bright ness is on by default. You can still adjust your brightness when needed. Sleep: Change how long it takes for your device s screen to go black when you re not using it. Learn more about Sleep Settings. Daydream: Set up screensavers that display photos, color ful backgrounds, and more when your device is charging or docked. Learn more about using Daydream. Ambient display (Nexus 6 only): Turn on ambient display if you want your phone to wake up when you pick it up or when a notification arrives. Sound and notification You can change the sound and notification settings on your de vice by going to Settings > Device > Sound & notification. Notifications alert you to the arrival of new messages, calen dar events, and alarms, as well as ongoing events, such as downloads: Interruptions. Prioritize sound notifications so they don t inter rupt you. Touch the settings to turn phone call and message interruptions on or off. If you turn Messages notifications on, touch From to specify from whom you accept notifications (Anyone, Starred contacts or Contacts Only). In Downtime, se lect which days and times you allow for sound notifications. When device is locked. Manage whether notifications can be seen when your phone is locked, and whether sensitive con tent in a notification can be seen. 127 , or the details of a calendar event. For more information, see Help Center. App Notifications. Modify the notification settings individu ally for apps such as Gmail. The setting under When device is locked will always take precedence over the setting for an individual app. Notification access. See which apps can access your notifications. When a notification arrives, its icon appears at the top of the screen. 128 TIP: Wi-Fi and mobile signal strength are indicated at the top of the screen by white bars. To see whether the select ed Wi-Fi network has a full Internet connection, open Quick Settings by swiping down with two fingers from the top of the screen. In Quick Settings only, white bars in the Wi-Fi or mobile signal indicators indicate the signal strength of a normal Internet connection. Certain notifications can be expanded to show more information, such as previews or calendar events. The one at the top is always expanded when possible. To expand a notification, posi tion one finger inside it and swipe down slowly. To open the related app, touch the notification icon on the left. Some notifications also allow you to take specific actions by touching icons within the notification. For example, Calendar notifications allow you to Snooze (remind you later) or send to other guests. When you re finished with a notification, swipe it away. 129 Manage accounts on your device You can add accounts so that information associated with that account automatically syncs with your device. You ll need to set up an account on your device if you want to get or get apps from the Google Play store. You can also add multiple users for your device, like if several people share a tablet. Adding users is different from adding accounts. Each user has separate settings and can t access the accounts of other users, whereas a single user can have multiple accounts and switch between them anytime they re signed in. Make sure you re signed in as the correct user before adding or removing any account information. Add an account 1. Go to Settings > Personal > Accounts. Touch Add account. 2. Touch the type of account you want to add. You may be able to choose from choices like Google, Personal (IMAP), or Personal (POP3). If you re not sure whether to choose IMAP ANDROID QUICK START GUIDE ESSENTIALS 22

130 or POP3, try IMAP first. Many services use IMAP. Learn more about the differences between IMAP and POP3. i. Choose Google if you want to add your Google Account. When you sign in with a Google Account, all the , con tacts, calendar events, and other data associated with that account are automatically synced with your device. ii. Follow the on-screen instructions to add the account. To change the settings of any of the accounts you added, follow these steps: 1. Go to Settings > Personal > Accounts. 2. Select your account. If you re using a Google account, touch Google and then your account. Remove an account When you remove an account that you ve added to your device, everything associated with that account, including , con tacts, and settings is also deleted. You can t delete the account you used to initially set up your device. To remove an account from your device, follow these steps: 1. Check to see if the account you want to delete is the account you used to set up your device. If it s not, go to step 2 and follow the instructions. If it is, reset your device to its factory settings instead of following the steps below. This erases all of the data from your device and you ll need a Google Account to set up your device again. Learn how to do a factory data reset on your Nexus device or Google Play edition device. 2. Open the Settings menu on your device. ANDROID QUICK START GUIDE ESSENTIALS 23

131 3. Under Accounts, touch the name of the account you want to remove. If you re using a Google account, touch Google and then the account. When you sign out of your Google Account, all the , contacts, Calendar events, and other data associated with that account will no longer automatically sync with your device. 4. Touch Menu in the top right corner of the screen. 5. Touch Remove account. Share your device with other users You can easily share your device with family and friends by creat ing a separate user for each person. Each person has their own space on the device for custom Home screens, accounts, apps, settings, and more. You must be the device owner to add users. To add a new user, follow these steps: 1. Go to Settings > Device > Users. 2. Touch Add user, then touch OK. i. If you re with the new user: Touch Set up now and you ll be taken to the lock screen. Select the new user, unlock the screen, and allow them to set up their Google Account and other details. ii. If the new user isn t around: Touch Not now. A New user will appear in the list. The next time you re with the user, go back to the user list and select New user or click the user image on the lock screen. After a user is set up, when you go to the lock screen, you ll see a second user profile picture or avatar in the status bar. To choose a user, touch the picture and unlock the screen. 132 Switch users To switch users, swipe down from the top of any screen twice to open Quick Settings. Touch the image of the current user in the top right corner of the screen, then touch another user s image. Remove a user The device s owner can delete any user that they added: 1. Go to Settings > Device > Users. 2. Touch Settings next to the user s name, then touch Re move user. Other users can only delete their own space. 1. Go to Settings > Device > Users. 2. Touch Menu> Delete username from this device. Guest user If someone wants to temporarily use your device, but they don t need to be set up as a regular user, they can use it as a guest. Guest users don t have access to your mail, your apps, or any content on your phone that s tied to your account, like photos or downloaded files. You must be the device s owner to add a guest. 1. Go to Settings > Device > Users. 2. Touch Guest. When your guest is finished using your device, you can switch back to another user. To switch to another user: Swipe down from the top of any screen, and then touch the bar at the top to open Quick Settings. To choose another user, touch the image in the top right corner of the screen, then touch another user s image. ANDROID QUICK START GUIDE ESSENTIALS 25

133 Security If a lock is set for your screen, the screen goes dark and locks when the display goes to sleep or if you press the Power button. You can set locks of different strengths using Screen Lock settings: 1. Go to Settings > Personal > Security > Screen lock. 2. Touch the type of lock you d like to use. Even when your screen is locked, you can perform certain activities. Quick Settings: Slide down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings without entering your password. Camera: Slide from right to left to open the Camera. Access Dialer: Slide from left to right to make a phone call. (First you have to enter your password.) Emergency Calls: Slide from left to right to make an emergen cy phone call without having to enter your password. If you have a tablet that s set up for more than one user, you may need to touch your image at the bottom of the screen to see your own locked screen. For more information, visit Customize the screen lock. Smart Lock You can turn on Smart Lock to keep your device unlocked when it s clear that you have it with you for example, when it s con nected to your Bluetooth watch or when it recognizes your face. 134 Trusted devices and face matching You can set your device to stay unlocked while connected to a Bluetooth device like a watch, fitness tracker, headset, or car speaker system. You can also set your phone to unlock when it touches an NFC tag. You can also have your device unlock when it recognizes your face. After setting a trusted face, every time you turn on your device, it will search for your face and unlock if it recognizes you. Keep in mind that someone who looks similar to you could unlock your phone. Note: Face matching doesn t store any photos of you. Data used to recognize your face is only stored on your device and is not acces sible by apps or backed up on Google servers. For more information on how to use these features, see Trusted devices and face matching. Screen pinning You can enable your device to only show a certain app s screen using screen pinning. Screen pinning can be handy if you want to play a game without accidentally minimizing the app if you touch the Home button. Some apps may ask you if you want to use screen pinning. When a screen is unpinned, you can choose to return to the screen where you enter your password or PIN. To pin a screen: 1. Go to Settings > Security > Screen pinning and turn screen pinning on. 2. 135 3. Touch Overview on your device. Swipe up the first screen on the bottom to bring it into view. 4. Touch the pin. Here, you can select an option to return to the lock screen after a screen is unpinned. 5. To exit from the pinned screen, touch and hold and at the same time. Protect against harmful apps Apps from Google Play are always verified by Google to protect you and your device from harm. By default, your device doesn t al low the installation of apps from sources other than Google Play. If you choose to allow the installation of apps from unknown sources and install apps from sources other than Google Play, it s more likely that apps will be installed that could harm you or your device. If you allow the installation of apps from unknown sources, the Verify Apps feature protects you when installing apps outside of Google Play by continually checking your device to make sure that all apps installed are behaving in a safe manner, even after installation. For more information or to change the default behavior, visit Pro tect against harmful apps. Android Device Manager If you lose your phone or tablet, the Android Device Manager can help you find its approximate location, make it ring, lock it, or erase its data. These options are turned on by default. To view or change them, open the Google Settings app (found in All Apps) and touch Android Device Manager. ANDROID QUICK START GUIDE ESSENTIALS 28

136 If you lose your device, go to Android Device Manager and follow the instructions. Android Beam You can instantly send, or beam, a web page, a video, or other content from your screen to another device by bringing the devic es together (typically back to back). In some apps, you can also start a beam from the Share menu. Before you begin: Make sure both devices are unlocked, support Near Field Communication (NFC), and have both NFC and Android Beam turned on. To check, go to Settings > Wireless & net works > More. Also, make sure you know where the NFC area is on the back of both devices. 1. Open a screen that contains something you d like to share, such as a webpage, YouTube video, or place page in Maps. 2. Move the back of your device toward the back of the other device. When the devices connect, you hear a sound, the im age on your screen reduces in size, and you see the message Touch to beam. 3. Touch your screen anywhere. The other device displays the transferred content. Or, if the necessary app isn t installed, Google Play opens to a screen where your friend can down load the app. To turn on NFC, go to Settings > Wireless & net works > More > NFC. 137 Tap & pay When NFC is turned on, you can use the Tap & pay feature to pay for items just by touching your phone to a reader at a register. To manage your Tap & pay apps: 1. Go to Settings > Device > Tap & pay. 2. Touch an app to make it your default payment app. If your device doesn t have a default payment app, such as Goo gle Wallet, you can browse Google Play for other payment apps. IMPORTANT: Tap & pay manages payment apps like Goo gle Wallet. The Tap & pay setting doesn t apply to Android Beam and won t include certain apps, such as money transfer apps. Printing With Android 5.0, you can preview and print the content of certain screens (such as web pages displayed in Chrome) to a printer on the same Wi-Fi network as your Android device. Before you can print, you need a printing service installed on your device. Settings To> check System what > Printing. services are currently available, go to From here, you can open each available service to turn it on or off, check which printers it makes available, add new printers, and adjust the service s settings. 138 To print a document, such as a webpage in Chrome: 1. Touch Menu > Print. 2. In the dialog that appears, adjust settings such as printer, cop ies, orientation, and so on. 3. Touch Print. Chromecast Chromecast is a small device that plugs into the back of your TV. It allows you to send videos and music straight from your phone or tablet to your TV. You can use Chromecast with apps like: YouTube Netflix Google Play Movies & TV Google Play Music Hulu Plus To see more apps, visit chromecast.com/apps. When using Chromecast, make sure your phone or tablet is using the same Wi-Fi network as your Chromecast, and that Chrome cast is selected as your TV s source input. To display content from your phone or tablet on your TV: 1. Open the video or music in one of the apps listed above. 2. Touch Cast. 3. Play the content as usual to stream it to your TV. 139 File storage Android 5.0 makes it easy to store and browse through pictures, videos, and other files on your device and attach them to an , Hangout message, and so on. You can also use stored images as your Home screen wallpaper. For example, to attach an image to an you re composing, touch the Paper Clip in the top right and choose to either Attach file or Insert from Drive to select stored images in your Drive folder. From here, you can view any of these sources: Recent shows you the photos or videos you ve taken or opened most recently. Drive lets you attach any files stored in Google Drive. Images displays any photos, videos, or other images on your device. Downloads includes most files (excluding Play content) you ve downloaded from s or the Web Photos lets you browse all the images and videos that are on your device or have been uploaded to your Google account. In the Downloads app: Use the Downloads app to view, reopen, or delete files you download from Gmail or other sources (excluding Google Play books, videos, magazines, and other media.) Touch an item to open it. In your list of downloads, touch & hold an item to select it. Touch Share and choose a sharing method from the list. Touch to delete. 140 Google Play streams purchases and rentals via the Internet. So the purchases and rentals don t always occupy storage space when you play them. Although you can download content in Google Play apps to access offline, Google Play content never appears in Downloads. Screenshots To take a screenshot from Nexus or Google Play edition devices: 1. Make sure the image you want to capture is displayed on the screen. 2. Press the Power and Volume down buttons simultaneously. The screenshot is automatically saved in your Photos. TIP: To easily share your screenshot via Gmail, Google+, and more, select your screenshot in Photos and touch the at the bottom. Touch Edit to modify. Touch to delete. 142 Keyboards on tablets work in a similar way. To make the keyboard go away, touch the Back button below it. Some apps open the keyboard automatically. In others, you first need to touch where you want to type. Basic editing Change where you want to type Select text Touch the cursor, then touch and drag the tab that appears below it to the new position. Touch and hold or double-tap within the text. The nearest word highlights, with a tab at each end of the selection. Drag the tabs to change the selection. Delete text Touch the Delete key to delete the char acters before the cursor or selected text. Type capital To switch to capital letters for one letter, letters touch the Shift key once. You can also touch and hold the Shift key while you type or you can touch the Shift key and slide to another key. When you release the key, the lowercase letters reappear. 143 Change word capitalization If you want to quickly change the capitaliza tion of a word you ve already typed, you can select it and touch the Shift key. You ll have the option to select the capital ized word or the word in all capital letters. Type a symbol or character View more symbols and characters Cut, copy, paste To switch to symbol keys for one word, touch the symbol key once.?123 You can also touch and hold the symbol key?123 while you type or you can touch thesym bol key?123 and slide to another key. When you release the key, the letter keys reappear. Touch and hold symbols or characters to get accented characters or additional symbols. Select the text you want to cut or copy. Then touch the Cut button or Copy button. To paste, touch the space where you want to paste your text and then touch Paste. If you want to replace other text with the text you copied, highlight the text, then touch the Paste button. Emoji Use Google Keyboard to choose from a variety of small, colorful images used to express emotion (known as emoji) to add some fun to your messages. Depending on your device, you may need to touch and hold the Return key and then slide your finger to the happy face to display emoji. On a tablet, just touch the emoji symbol at the lower right. 144 You ll see a panel like this. To move between categories, swipe left or right or touch the symbols in the top row. To type an emoji, touch it: Use next-word suggestions 1. Touch the location where you want to input text. 2. Start typing out a word. When the word you want is displayed in a list above the keyboard, touch it. 3. Continue to touch words unless the one you want doesn t appear. If so, type it. Android continues to suggest words as you type. To change your keyboard and input methods, go to Settings > Personal > Language & input. To turn next-word suggestions on or off, go to Set tings > Personal > Language & input > Keyboard & input methods > Google Keyboard > Text correction > Next-word suggestions. 145 Gesture Typing Gesture Typing works best for English. Quality varies for other lan guages, and some don t support it yet. To input a word using Gesture Typing: 1. Touch the location where you want to type to open the keyboard. 2. Slide your finger slowly across the letters of the word you want to input. 3. Release your finger when the word you want is displayed in the floating preview or the middle of the suggestion strip. To select one of the other words in the suggestion strip, touch it. If the word you want isn t shown while using Gesture Typing, you can type it out manually. If you gesture a word and want to change it, touch the word to see other choices in the suggestion strip. TIP: If there are letters you want to emphasize, like repeat ed letters, such as the e in sleep, pause over the e slight ly longer before moving on to the next letter. Use Gesture Typing without the space bar When you use Gesture Typing, there s no need to use the space bar just continue to slide your finger across the letters you want to input, then lift your finger to start the next word. 146 Keyboard dictionaries To manage keyboard dictionaries, go to Settings > Personal > Language & input. Personal dictionary You can add your own words to your personal dictionary so that your device remembers them. To add a word or phrase, including an optional shortcut, go to Settings > Personal > Language & input > Google Keyboard > Text Correction > Personal dictio nary and the language of the dictionary you want to modify, then choose Add and type in the word. When you use the optional shortcut when typing, your word or phrase appears as an option in the suggested words above the keyboard. Add-on dictionaries 1. Go to Settings > Personal > Language & input > Google Keyboard > Text Correction > Add-on dictionaries. 2. You ll see dictionaries for other languages that you can down load to your device. 3. Touch the dictionary you want, then Install. Type by speaking You can speak to enter text in most places where you can enter text with the onscreen keyboard. 1. Touch a text field, or a location in the text you ve already en tered in a text field. 2. Touch the Microphone key on the onscreen keyboard. 3. When you see the microphone image, speak what you want to type. Google Play Google Play brings together all your favorite apps & games, movies & TV shows, books, music, and news & magazines in one place, so you can reach it from any of your devices. To open the Google Play app, touch Google Play. If you purchased content on Google Play in the past, you ll auto matically have access to this content on any Android device just make sure you re signed in using the same account that you used to purchase it. To check: 1. Open the Google Play app. 2. Touch Menu at the top left. From here, you can view the current account or switch to another, view your purchased apps, check your wish list, and so on. To set preferences, clear your search history, and turn on user controls, go to Menu> Settings. Camera The Camera app lets you take photos, panoramic photos, videos, and immersive 360-degree photo sphere shots, including what s above and below you. To open Camera: From the the lock screen, swipe from right to left. From the Home screen, touch Camera. The first time you open Camera, you may be asked if you want it to remember photo locations. 153 When you open Camera, you can choose from five different cam era modes. To see the modes, swipe left to right. The Camera icon indicates Camera mode. To take a picture: 1. Frame your subject and watch for the focus ring. To focus on a different part of the image, touch it. To zoom in, pinch two fingers outwards. To zoom out, pinch two fingers inwards. 2. When the focus ring brackets disappear, touch the shutter button, which is the camera button.`` 3. To see the image you just took, swipe from right to left. 154 Photo Sphere Panorama To capture a 360-degree or wide angle shot, pan or tilt until the circle in the center of the screen moves over a blue dot and records that portion of the image. Keep moving over the dots until you re finished, then touch the check mark at the bottom of the screen. Touch Panorama to begin taking a panoramic photo. Find your starting point, and touch the shutter to take the first picture in the panorama. To take the subsequent pictures, slowly swivel the phone in place to move the target icon over each gray dot until the dot turns blue. Keep hovering over the dots until all of them are blue and your image is complete. Then touch the check mark at the bottom of the screen. Lens Blur Camera Video Touch Lens Blur, then slowly raise the device following the arrow. Touch Camera to take regular pictures. To start recording a video, touch the video but ton.
