2 2 Categories of CDA Open Source Tools Broadly speaking CDA Projects offer three different types of capabilities for working with CDA. Today we will only consider CDA Document Creation and CDA Document Consumption

5 5 Model Driven Health Tools A very mature tool that is actively developed, primarily for use in the USA. Uses Java / Eclipse technology stack. Good overview document available at : ntations/ /onc_mdht_overview.pdf Currently can not be used for implementation of NHS CDA profiles due to different approaches to templates within CDA. MDHT team approached DHID in January 2013 to explore the closed templating approach and its potential implementation within the MDHT tool. In conversation with a number of USA agencies with regards to the benefits of closed templates

6 6 Everest Framework A very mature tool that is actively developed, primarily for use in Canada. Focus is the whole of HL7V3 not just CDA Initially developed for.net using C#, but have started porting code to Java. The tool works on the MIF (Model Interchange Files) files which hold the definitions of the HL7V3 models. All CFH HL7V3 specifications are published with the MIF files available. Currently can not be used for implementation of NHS CDA profiles due to no support of templates within CDA. A development opportunity?

7 7 Emerging CDA Open Source Projects Neither of the major international CDA Open Source tools can support the CDA profiles created by the NHS. Future development might enable this. The current ISCF initiative may offer other Open Source projects, when the ISCF is over then I suspect details will emerge. Projects closer to home emerging to address this need, comparatively simpler and far less mature. A project to create CDA documents for NHS profiles A project to create ITK payloads (currently not CDA, though CDA in the pipeline )

9 9 Primarily developed by Richard Kavanagh with code contributions from others increasing. Developed in C# under an Apache 2 licence. Makes use of components of the Everest Framework previously mentioned, with NHS CFH localisations. Developed specifically to simplify the creation of CDA documents and natively supports the NHS CDA templating process. The development process served to test the specifications and resulted in numerous clarifications and corrections. Only for creating CDA documents, not consuming them.
