2 S-131 FIREFIGHTER TYPE 1 S-133 LOOK UP, LOOK DOWN, LOOK AROUND Meets NWCG PMS Standards S-131 is an eight-hour course designed to meet the training needs of the FFT1. It is interactive in nature and contains several tactical decision games which are designed to facilitate learning the objectives and to promote class discussion. Topics include fireline reference materials, communications, and tactical decision making. S-133 is a four-hour course designed to train Incident Commander Type 5 and FFT1 to identify environmental factors and indicators of hazardous fire conditions and how to use these indicators when implementing the Risk Management Process. The course is DVD-based training, basic on facilitated exercise. 3 LANGUAGE SKILLS ASSESSMENT Meets NWCG Standards Assessment of English language skills is now mandatory for providing contract fireline hand crews. Government requires that the contract STCR, CRWB, and FFT1 be able to communicate with incident management personnel in English, as well as with their crew in the language of the crew. The assessment will determine if an individual is monolingual (English only) or bilingual (English and Spanish). Students will be given a written exam and an oral exam to assess comprehension; in those exams, one or more of the following reference components will be used: weather, safety, and fire behavior documents; Incident Response Pocket Guide; Fireline Handbook; Incident Action Plan (IAP). 4 S-200 INITIAL ATTACK INCIDENT COMMANDER Meets NWCG and DPSST Standards This 16-hour course is designed to meet the needs of the Incident Commander Type 4 and is presented in a discussion/exercise format. The six instructional units include: Foundation Skills; Intelligence Gathering and Documentation; Sizeup the Incident; Develop a Plan of Action; Post-fire Activities; Evaluating Incident Objectives and Manage the Incident. Evaluation of the student is by unit tests and performance-based evaluations. Prerequisites: Qualified as any single resource boss. 5 FRP130 BASIC WILDLAND FIREFIGHTER (FFT2) Meets NWCG PMS Standards This 38-hour course is designed to provide entry-level firefighting skills. A version of L-180, Human Factors on the Fireline, is included. The course provides information on personal preparedness and responsibility, mobilization, incident procedures, proper clothing and equipment, and living conditions in wildland fire camps. Also included in the course is S-190 instruction in the primary factors affecting the start and spread of wildfire and recognition of potentially hazardous situations. Credit will be issued for S-110, S-130, S-190 and L-180 upon successful completion of this course. This course is also offered as a 3-credit class; look for it in RCC s online Schedule of Classes. 7 S-203 INTRO TO INCIDENT INFORMATION Meets NWCG and DPSST Standards This course provides students with the skills and knowledge needed to serve as public information officers. The course covers: establishing/maintaining an incident information operation; communicating with internal/external audiences; working with the news media; handling special situations; long-term planning and strategy. Topics include operational leadership, preparation and mobilization, assignment preparation, risk management, entrapment avoidance, safety and tactics, offline duties, demobilization, and post incident responsibilities. 12 BASIC LAND NAVIGATION An abbreviated version of the old "Maps and Compass" course. Navigating with a compass and map is an essential skill for many incident positions. This 8-hour course is an introduction to land navigation and is designed to meet the basic needs of the FFT1 and crew boss functions. (This course provides only an overview of electronic GPS devices.) Class begins with a general overview of maps, then specifically addresses how to read topographic maps. Next it covers various types of geographic location systems, such as latitude/longitude and Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM), followed by basic instructions on using a compass and clinometer. Finally, a general overview of the Global Positioning System is presented.
