1 Wisconsin DNR Wildland Fire Academy Feb & 18-22, 2013 Location The 2013 WI DNR Wildland Fire Academy will be held at the Stoney Creek Inn, 1100 Imperial Avenue in Rothschild, WI. Tuition/Registration Registration fees for classes vary according to length of class and material costs. Tuition includes lunches for the students for everyday they are in class. Check the registration form for fees by class selection. Registrations must be received by January 18 th, DNR employees are registered by supervisors using the Forestry Training Registration System. Partners please send proof of prerequisites with your registration form. Acceptable documentation includes: IQS and IQCS records or course certificates and Incident Qualification Cards. 2 WISCONSIN WILDLAND FIRE ACADEMY February 2013 Course Selections S-200 Initial Attack Incident Commander Start: Tuesday, February 12, 2013, 8:00 am End: Friday, February 15, 2013, 4:30 pm Prerequisites: Qualified as any single resource boss (ENGB, HEQB, FIRB, etc.) and satisfactory completion of pre-course work. Course Description: This course is designed to meet the training needs of the Initial Attack Incident Commander (ICT4). It is presented in a lecture/discussion format and supplemented with group exercises. The six instructional units include: Foundation Skills; Intelligence Gathering and Documentation; Size up the Incident; Develop a Plan of Action; Post Fire Activities; Evaluating Incident Objectives and Manage the Incident. Evaluation of the trainee is by unit tests and performance based evaluations. Class size: 20 Course Fee: $ S-215 Fire Operations in the Urban Interface Start: Wednesday February 20, :00 am End: Friday February 22, :30 pm Prerequisites: Wildland fire students must be qualified as an Advanced Firefighter FFT1. Course Description: This course is designed to assist structure and wildland firefighters who will be making tactical decisions when confronting wildland fire that threatens life, property, and improvements in the wildland/urban interface. Instructional units include: interface awareness, size-up, initial strategy and incident action plan, structure triage, structure protection tactics, incident action plan assessment and update, followup and public relations, and firefighter safety in the interface. Class size: 24 Students should bring: Fireline Handbook and Incident Response Pocket Guide Course Fee: $ S-230 Single Resource Boss Crew Boss Start: Monday February 11, :00 am End: Wednesday February 13, :30 pm Prerequisites: Qualified as advanced firefighter/squad boss (FFT1), successful completion of Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior (S-290) and pre-course work. Course Description: Crew boss (Single Resource) is a classroom skill course to produce student proficiency in the performance of all duties associated with the single resource crew boss, from initial dispatch through demobilization to home unit. Topics include: operational leadership; preparation and mobilization; assignment preparation; risk management, entrapment avoidance; safety and tactics; offline duties; demobilization; and post-incident activities. This course is designed for use throughout the United States, and includes examples from all geographic areas. Course Fee: $200.00

3 S-231 Single Resource Boss Engine Boss Start: Thursday February 14, :00 am End: Friday February 15, :30 pm Prerequisites: Qualified as advanced firefighter/squad boss (FFT1), and successful completion of Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior, S-290 and Crew Boss (Single Resource), S-230. Course Description: Engine Boss (Single Resource) is a skill course to produce student proficiency in the performance of all duties associated with the engine boss, single resource (ENGB). Topics include engine and crew capabilities and limitations, information sources, fire size up considerations, tactics and Wildland/urban interface. S-233/232 Single Resource Boss Tractor/Dozer Boss Start: Monday February 18, :00 am End: Tuesday February 19, :30 pm Prerequisites: Qualified as advanced firefighter/squad boss (FFT1), and successful completion of pre-course work. Course Description: This course is designed to be interactive in nature. It contains exercises designed to facilitate group and class discussion. Flexibility is built into the class so instructors can customize lessons to address specific local needs. S-234 Ignition Operations Start: Wednesday February 20, :00 am End: Friday February 22, :30 pm Prerequisites: S-290 Intermediate Fire Behavior and satisfactory completion of pre-course work. Course Description: This course introduces the roles and responsibilities of a firing boss (FIRB), common firing devices, and general fire operations and techniques. It provides students with important information concerning general tasks required to be successful. Course fee: $ S-270 Basic Air Operations Start: Monday February 18, :00 am End: Tuesday February 19, :30 pm Prerequisites: Satisfactory completion of pre-course work. Course Description: This course covers aircraft types and capabilities, aviation management and safety for flying in and working with agency aircraft, tactical and logistical uses of aircraft, and requirements for helicopter take-off and landing areas. 4 FI-110 Wildland Fire Observations and Origin Scene Protection for First Responders Start: Monday February 11, :30 am End: Monday February 11, :30 pm Prerequisites: None Course Description: The primary emphasis of this course is to teach sound Wildland fire observations and origin scene protection practices that enable first responders to a wildland fire scene to perform proper origin scene protection procedures. The course includes short lectures, electronic presentations, exercises, and class discussion. Course Description: Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior is a classroom-based skills course designed to prepare the prospective fireline supervisor to undertake safe and effective fire management operations. It is the second course in a series that collectively serves to develop fire behavior prediction knowledge and skills. Instructor stress local conditions. S-390 Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior Calculations Start: Wednesday June 5, 2013 End: Saturday June 8, 2013 Prerequisites: Completion of S-290 Intermediate Wildland Fie Behavior, qualified as a single resource boss, preselection assessment and pre-course work. Course Description: This course is designed to introduce fire behavior calculations by manual methods, using nomograms and the Fire Behavior Handbook Appendix B. Students gain an understanding of the determinants of fire behavior through studying inputs (weather, slope, fuels, and fuel moisture). Students also learn how to interpret fire behavior outputs, documentation processes, and fire behavior briefing components. S-234 Ignition Operations Start: Thursday February 28, 2013 End: Saturday March 2, 2013 Prerequisites: S-290 Intermediate Fire Behavior and satisfactory completion of pre-course work.
