2 2013 Instructor Symposium Southside Virginia Community College Alberta Campus The Virginia Department of Fire Programs Division 5 Office will be host to Instructor Symposium 2013 March 16-17, This symposium is designed to meet the need for instructors statewide. All Train-the-Trainers will be offered in the new format with classroom didactic sessions, practicum exercises where applicable and teach back time during each session. All instructors will be required to complete 16 hours of instruction within a 12 - month period beginning July 1, 2013 to stay current with his or her Train-the-Trainer. Registration Open registration will begin on December 21, Applications received prior to that date will be returned. Registrations received will be processed on a first come, first served basis. Pre-registration will close March 8, Pre-tests will be available after February for those courses requiring a pre-test. Classroom assignments will be provided at check in. Books Books that are required will be available for purchase and pick up after students check-in at registration. Book costs will be provided in your registration letter. Cash or checks will only be accepted for the amount of purchase for any books. All checks will be made out to Treasurer of Virginia. 3 U2 Day Train the Trainers UDriver/Operator Pumper Train-the-Trainer Description: This course is designed to review the 5 module course. Time will be spent in each module along with hands-on operations. Course instructor manuals and PowerPoint presentations will be available for use through each Division Office once candidate has successfully completed all requirements for this course. Personal copies of instructor materials may also be purchased through the VDFP Bookstore in Glen Allen prior to the course. *** Prerequisite: Fire Instructor Level I, and NFPA 1403 Awareness, EVOC S3 certification, Current certification in D/OP. All students must furnish a driving record by the morning of class. UHazardous Materials Awareness and Operations Train the Trainer- Description: This course is designed to review the Hazardous Materials program and give the Instructor the tools to deliver a quality program. Emphasis will be placed on scheduling, lecture, and fieldwork. This course will be taught in cooperation with Virginia Department of Emergency Management training staff. This TtT will be required to teach the new Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations program. It is open to current HMO Instructors as well as new instructors. Prerequisites: Fire Instructor I and NFPA 1403 Awareness. Have completed the L.P. Gas Emergencies basic course. A PRETEST WILL BE GIVEN FOR THIS COURSE. Special Note: Class consists of both lecture and practical stations. Students must bring full PPE and SCBA to class. A pretest is required for all candidates by March 8, Class size is limited to 24 students. New instructors must complete 16 hours of field instruction L.P. Gas Emergenices Train the Trainer Description: This course prepares the instructor candidate for the administrative functions of the course, classroom delivery methodology and practical delivery. The instructor candidate will be required to participate in the classroom and practical delivery modules. During the course the candidate will be given specific sessions of the program to present and/or lead. Prerequisites: Instructor II and NFPA 1403 Awareness. Have completed the L.P. Gas Emergencies basic course. Special Note: Class size is limited to 16 students. Students must bring full PPE and SCBA to class. New instructors must complete 16 hours of field instruction

4 U NFA Preparation for Initial Company Operations (PICO) Train the Trainer- Description: This course is designed to review the PICO program and give the Instructor the tools to deliver a quality program. The PICO course is designed to develop a better understanding of the role and responsibilities of a Company Officer in preparing their company operations. It attempts to clarify the transition from firefighter to company officer and the new role relating to leadership and safety. Prerequisites: Fire Instructor II and NFPA 1403 Awareness, and completion of the NFA MCTO series of classes. IS 100, 200 and 700 is also a NFA mandatory pre-requisite. Rapid Intervention Team (16 hour) Train the Trainer - Description: This course builds on the Mayday Firefighter Down program. The objective of this course is to overview how the curriculum will assist RIT teams in a company of four to six firefighters designated by the Incident Commander as the RIT team. The following subjects will be covered; case studies, preparing for survival, firefighter rescue, RIT team components, review of self-rescue techniques, and practical exercises of rescue team techniques. Prerequisites: New Fire Instructor Level II or III and Hazardous Materials Operations, Mayday Awareness Train-the-Trainer and Mayday Firefighter Down Train-the-Trainer. Special Note: This is a very physical course and the instructor/candidate will be required to complete all classroom and practical sessions. Students must bring PPE, SCBA, and spare bottle to class. Once complete the instructor must complete 16 hours of field instruction Unified Command Systems Train the Trainer Description: This course is designed to review the elements to instruct those officers who would function in a Command or General Staff position during a multiagency operation. Lectures and activities are designed to promote a better understanding of multiagency needs and a Unified Command structure. This course is designed to provide an understanding of the requirements of a Unified Command organization and the skills necessary to operate effectively at complex incidents. Prerequisites: Fire Instructor II and NFPA 1403 Awareness, and completion of the NFA MCTO series of classes. IS 100, 200 and 700 is also a NFA mandatory pre-requisite. Traffic Incident Management Train the Trainer Description: This new course offering will be available for multi-agency delivery across the Commonwealth and will require the team teaching methodology with another public safety official. Instructor/Candidates will be given the materials necessary to offer this course in a multi-agency format. Course will include the overview of basic traffic terminology, notification and response guidelines, on scene initiatives, command responsibilities, traffic management and termination. Hands-on activity will conclude the course through tabletop and parking lot controlled environment demonstrations. Prerequisites: Instructor I (fire service personnel), approval from agency Chief-level officer for OEMS and Law Enforcement personnel. Tow Operator personnel prerequisites will include an understanding of adult learning presentation skills. Hours: 12

5 USaturday Only Train the Trainers Basic Pump Operations Train the Trainer- ( ) Description: This course will provide the instructor with the general knowledge required to assist in the presentation skills for Basic Pump Operations. Instructor candidates will cover different types of pump designs and applications. Prerequisites: Candidate must pass a Pretest (to be offered in each VDFP Division Office) prior to making application for this training and have the following minimum prerequisites; New Fire Instructor Level I or above, EVOC Class 3 and have completed Basic Pump Operations basic level course. Hours: 8 Emergency Vehicle Operator Course Train the Trainer- ( ) Description: This course is designed to review the new EVOC program and give the Instructor the tools to deliver a quality program. Emphasis will be placed on scheduling, lecture, and fieldwork. Prerequisites: Instructor I and NFPA 1403 Awareness with the basic EVOC level 3 program. All students must furnish a driving record prior to or by the morning of class. Hours: 8 Test Site Administrator Test Site Evaluator training ( ) Description: This course is required for all instructors to assist with the administration of the written examination and skill evaluation of the programs delivered by VDFP. This program has been developed as a measure to train all instructors (P-14: Part-time Instructors and non-compensated local instructors) with the necessary policy and procedures that have recently been implemented to comply with accreditation requirements. Prerequisites: Instructor I and NFPA 1403 Awareness. Hours: 4 Special Note: Class size is limited to 24 students. New evaluators will be required to work with his or her VDFP Division Chief to become acclimated with the administrator process once the TtT course is completed. USunday Only Train the Trainer Rural Water Supply Train the Trainer ( ) Description: This course will provide the instructor with the general knowledge required to assist in the presentation skills for Rural Water Supply Operations. Time will be spent discussing rural water shuttle operations, alternate source water supply, and apparatus placement during fill site operations. Prerequisites: Candidate must pass a Pretest (to be offered in each VDFP Division Office) prior to making application for this training and have the following minimum prerequisites; New Fire Instructor Level I or above, EVOC Class 3 and have completed Rural Water Supply basic level course. Hours: 8

Once accepted all students will be notified and must take the pretest (if required) by close of business on March 8, 2013, this can be completed at any VDFP Division Office. There is no retest for unsuccessful pre-test scores. Pretests will be available after February 1, All students must check-in at Southside Community College Campus between 7:30 AM and 7:45 AM., or one hour prior to course beginning. Classroom assignments will be provided at check in. 3. Registration begins on December 21, 2012; registrations received prior to this date will be mailed back.
