2 Presentation Overview The purpose of this descriptive session is to acquaint teachers with the process and benefits of becoming Board Certified by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. Two Nationally Board Certified teachers will share their personal experiences with the certification process.

4 National Board Certification is Recognition for accomplished teaching in: Content Knowledge and Teaching Pedagogy Advanced Certification Voluntary Assessment based on National Standards of accomplished teaching

12 Eligibility At least 3 years experience as a pre-k-12 classroom teacher A bachelor s degree A valid teaching license

13 The Certification Process Is a two-part assessment Can be completed in 1 year, with up to 3 years to certify Is based on standards in each certificate area

14 The Assessment Process The assessment process is designed to collect standards-based evidence of accomplished practice! In all certificate areas, candidates are required to complete 2 major components: A Portfolio of Classroom Practice An Assessment of Content Knowledge

15 The Portfolio The Complete Portfolio contains four different entries! Three are classroom based Two require video recordings of classroom interactions All three require a collection of student work Each requires some direct evidence of teaching and a written reflection

16 The Assessment Four Portfolio Entries Demonstrate accomplished teaching Include videos of large and small group classroom practice Require student work samples Document continuous learning, leadership, and collaboration Candidates write a detailed analysis of the instruction reflected in student work and video recording!

17 The Assessment Six Assessment Center Exercises Demonstrate accomplished proficiency with subject matter Are delivered at a computer assisted testing center Are timed, with open response prompts Candidates demonstrate their content knowledge in response to 6 exercises!

20 Certification Renewal Awarded for 10 Years Certification renewal process must begin before Expiration Date Two opportunities to renew: 8 th Year of Certification 9 th Year of Certification Renewal is in the original certification area
