29 HPE Moonshot Component Pack The Moonshot Component Pack is a comprehensive firmware solution tested on the Moonshot System and delivered as a compressed file. The compressed file includes all the component files needed to update a Moonshot System. Users deploy the firmware updates contained in the Moonshot Component Pack using the included Smart Update Manager, or by using the ilo Chassis Manager GUI or CLI, or the HPE Moonshot switch module CLI. Download the latest pack from the Hewlett Packard Enterprise website ( Smart Update Manager Smart Update Manager (SUM) is an application included with the HPE Edgeline Component Pack that provides a web-based GUI for installing and updating firmware on many Hewlett Packard Enterprise products, including the Edgeline System. Smart Update Manager has an integrated discovery engine that finds the installed hardware and current versions of firmware in use on nodes that you identify. This application installs updates in the correct order and ensures that all dependencies are net before deploying an update, and prevents an installation if there are version-based dependencies that it cannot resolve. The version of Smart Update Manager included with each HPE Edgeline Component Pack release is designed to be the best solution for installing Edgeline System firmware updates. Always use the included version of Smart Update Manager for Edgeline System updates. For more information, see the HPE Edgeline Component Pack Update Guide in the HPE Edgeline Information Library. 30 Configuration rules Basic configuration rules Chassis configuration rules are dependent on the models and quantities of cartridges and switches installed, but consider the following basic rules: Fans must be installed in all fan bays. Sufficient power supplies must be installed to support the installed cartridges and switches. The internal switch module and external uplink module are a mated pair. If two switch modules are installed, two uplink modules are required. All internal and external slots and bays must be populated with modules or blanks for proper thermal cooling. Supported cartridge configurations The HPE Moonshot 1500 Chassis can be configured for either: Like cartridge configurations Supports up to 45 cartridges For more information on like cartridge configurations, see Like cartridge configuration population rules on page 32. Mix-match cartridge configurations Supports up to 45 cartridges, following these rules: Quad node cartridges require the HPE Moonshot 180G Switch. Cartridges with hard drives must be installed in front of cartridges without hard drives in a given column. For more information on hardware compatibility, see Hardware compatibility matrix on page 40. For more information on mixing cartridge types, see Mix-match cartridge configuration population rules on page Configuration rules
31 Chassis population rules Cartridge population rules Cartridge configuration rules are maintained by the chassis, as each cartridge reports its model information to the Moonshot 1500 CM module. When installing cartridges in the chassis, begin by populating cartridge slot 1 and install all cartridges in numerical order by slot number (slot 1, 2, 3, and so on). If the chassis is powered on when adding cartridges, observe the following requirements: Cartridges must be installed one at a time. Elapsed time between removing the blank and installing the cartridge must not exceed 30 seconds. m510-16c cartridge population rules The m510-16c cartridge must be installed before any other cartridges. When installing m510-16c cartridges in the chassis, begin by populating cartridge slot 1. Move down the column to slot 2. Then, move to slot 4 and slot 5. Continue populating in numerical order between rows 1 and 2. Do not populate m510-16c cartridges in cartridge slots in row 3. If a column contains a m510-16c cartridge, leave the cartridge slot in the third row of that column blank. Additionally, leave blank the third slot in the column to the right of the m510-16c cartridge. Chassis population rules 31
32 For example, if an m510-16c cartridge is installed in slots 1 and 2, then slots 3 and 6 must be blank. The m510-16c cartridge can be mixed with other cartridges, so as along as the population rules for those cartridges are followed. Like cartridge configuration population rules When populating the Moonshot 1500 Chassis with all like cartridges, the standard population rules apply. For more information, see Cartridge population rules on page Populate all like cartridges by column, starting with slot 1. The entire chassis does not need to be all of the same cartridge; however, each column should be populated with the same cartridge. 2. Install blanks in all empty slots. Sample like cartridge configuration Mix-match cartridge configuration population rules When populating the Moonshot 1500 Chassis using the mix-match cartridge configuration, the standard population rules apply. For more information, see Cartridge population rules on page If possible, populate all like cartridges by column, starting with slot Populate mix-match columns with any hard drive cartridges in front of cartridges without hard drives. For example, if populating a column with the ProLiant m300 Server Cartridge (which includes a hard drive) in a mix-match configuration, install the m300 in row 3, closest to the front of the chassis. 3. Install blanks in all empty slots. 4. For optimal network performance with the HPE Moonshot 180XGc Switch, use the following slotting rule: The HPE Moonshot 180XGc switch can be used with a mix of different cartridge type, such as onenode or four-node cartridges, with 1GbE or 10GbE NICs. When the number of 10GbE cartridges in a 32 Like cartridge configuration population rules
33 chassis is greater than 10, use a Moonshot 45XGc switch for best performance. 34 mrca population rules The HPE Moonshot Remote Console Administrator (mrca), loaded with HPE ilo 4, enables an IT administrator to interface with the Moonshot System. It supports HPE Moonshot x86 server cartridges. For a current list of supported server cartridges, see the Hewlett Packard Enterprise website ( In order to interface with the specific server cartridge node, the mrca must be installed in a specific slot within the chassis, relative to the linking server cartridge. mrca recommended population rules If available, Hewlett Packard Enterprise recommends installing the linking server cartridge in slot #41, and then installing the mrca in the following slots to access the specific nodes of interest within that server cartridge. Item Description 1 Install the server cartridge to link and configure in slot #41. 2 To link and configure node 1 of the server cartridge, install the mrca in slot #44. Table Continued 34 mrca population rules
35 Item Description 3 To link and configure node 2 of the server cartridge, install the mrca in slot #40. 4 To link and configure node 3 of the server cartridge, install the mrca in slot #42. 5 To link and configure node 4 of the server cartridge, install the mrca in slot #38. mrca detailed population rules Hewlett Packard Enterprise recommends installing the linking cartridge in slot #41, and then following the mrca recommended population rules on page 34. However, if that option is unavailable for your chassis configuration, then install the mrca in the following slots, based on the linking cartridge slot and the node you want to link to. For example, if linking to node 2 of an HPE Moonshot m700 Cartridge installed in slot #25, the mrca must be installed in slot #27. The pairs are not required to be installed in any order as long as both the switch module and uplink module are in the same bay number. When installing a switch module in switch module bay A, install the uplink module in uplink module bay A on the rear of the chassis. When installing a switch module in switch module bay B, install the uplink module in uplink module bay B on the rear of the chassis. The switch module and uplink module are companion devices, and both are required for normal operation. All slots must be populated with either a module or a blank. 38 Switch module and uplink module population rules
39 Power supply population rules Two to four power supplies can be installed in the chassis. The required number of power supplies varies, depending on the configuration. A minimum of two power supplies is required to boot the chassis. A minimum of three power supplies is required to be redundant. A maximum of four power supplies can be installed in the chassis. Hewlett Packard Enterprise recommends using the HPE Power Advisor to calculate the infrastructure required for your configuration and allow some flexibility for growth. Hewlett Packard Enterprise provides power sizing tools on the Hewlett Packard Enterprise website ( hpepoweradvisor). Fan population rules Five fans ship standard with the chassis. Each fan contains two rotors. To boot and run the chassis, a minimum of five fans must be installed with at least nine operational rotors. For a redundant configuration, all five fans (10 rotors) must be installed and operating. Power supply population rules 39

48 Electrostatic discharge Preventing electrostatic discharge Procedure To prevent damaging the system, be aware of the precautions you must follow when setting up the system or handling parts. A discharge of static electricity from a finger or other conductor may damage system boards or other static-sensitive devices. This type of damage may reduce the life expectancy of the device. Avoid hand contact by transporting and storing products in static-safe containers. Keep electrostatic-sensitive parts in their containers until they arrive at static-free workstations. Place parts on a grounded surface before removing them from their containers. Avoid touching pins, leads, or circuitry. Always be properly grounded when touching a static-sensitive component or assembly. Grounding methods to prevent electrostatic discharge Several methods are used for grounding. Use one or more of the following methods when handling or installing electrostatic-sensitive parts: Use a wrist strap connected by a ground cord to a grounded workstation or computer chassis. Wrist straps are flexible straps with a minimum of 1 megohm ±10 percent resistance in the ground cords. To provide proper ground, wear the strap snug against the skin. Use heel straps, toe straps, or boot straps at standing workstations. Wear the straps on both feet when standing on conductive floors or dissipating floor mats. Use conductive field service tools. Use a portable field service kit with a folding static-dissipating work mat. If you do not have any of the suggested equipment for proper grounding, have an authorized reseller install the part. For more information on static electricity or assistance with product installation, contact the Hewlett Packard Enterprise Support Center. 48 Electrostatic discharge
