2 Why Information Systems? Positive future prospects of information systems Amount of data and information available in digital form is growing at breathtaking speed! This is driven by technology: digitalization of media and processes ubiquitous availability of intelligent devices and sensors dissemination of always-online mobile devices advancement of autonomous agents acting instead of humans as well as by social trends: democratization of the access to information and to means to produce and disseminate information: data consumers become data producers in Web 2.0 penetration with social media and social networks 2

Positive future prospects of information systems The ability to handle and use big data (analyzing, cross-linking, fusion) will become a major competitive advantage: increasing the quality and efficiency of existing products, processes, services creating completely new products, processes and services Computer science is the leading science in advancing information systems. Computer science develops and provides the foundations and platforms for the development of new systems, products and services. This requires a profound knowledge of computer science methods, in particular with respect to the design and the implementation of complex software-intensive systems. It needs to be complemented by application-domain specific knowledge. It requires social competences with awareness for cross-cutting concerns like data-privacy. 3

4 Why Information Systems? Employability Outstanding chances on the employment market for STEM graduates: Informatiker gehören heute zu den Stars auf dem Arbeitsmarkt. Knapp die Hälfte der Unternehmen erwartet für 2013 einen weiter steigenden Bedarf an IT-Absolventen und 43 Prozent eine ähnlich hohe Nachfrage wie im Vorjahr. Damit sind die Erwartungen gegenüber 2012 nur geringfügig gesunken, als rund die Hälfte mit einer steigenden oder stark steigenden Nachfrage rechnete. In der ITK-Kernbranche sind es sogar fast zwei Drittel, die von einer höheren Nachfrage nach IT-Absolventen ausgehen. Auch die Prognose für die kommenden fünf Jahre bewegt sich auf einem ähnlich hohen Niveau wie bei der Vorjahres-Umfrage. Weiterhin etwa zwei Drittel der Unternehmen rechnen mit einer wachsenden Nachfrage. Einen sinkenden Absolventenbedarf kann sich in der ITK-Branche mittelfristig niemand vorstellen. 7 Master IS (Information Systems): Objectives of the program and outcomes In the master program Information Systems, students shall acquire a profound understanding of the scientific aspects of complex information systems with special emphasis on the methodical design, implementation, maintenance, integration, and documentation of such systems. Students shall develop and enhance their research skills and critical thinking to conduct independent applied research work on information systems. They shall be able to create, analyze and maintain complex information systems covering their whole life-cycle. Apart from the extension of the technical competencies, the program imparts the necessary basic knowledge in the domain of management and organization in order to qualify graduates to fill a leading position in administration, industry, and business. The master program comprises a one-year project. It is designed to enable students to adapt to changing team situations, to organize team work and to solve problems as a team. Students are able to manage a project within an interdisciplinary team by organizing it from the initial idea until its successful realization. The project is accompanied by electives which allow for in-depth specialization in application domains or methods of information systems. 7

8 Master IS (Information Systems): Objectives of the program and outcomes Complex modern information systems are covered from different perspectives: computer science methods / informatics / information technology selected and characteristic application domains (e.g. industry, business, healthcare, etc.) social as well as economic implications The master program covers the complete life-cycle of complex information systems: From design over implementation and deployment to operation and maintenance. Currently, the master program information systems offers a specialization on intelligent systems via the module group intelligent information systems. This module group comprises the following modules: intelligent and cognitive systems autonomous systems 8

9 Master IS: Full-time study with appealing characteristics Pooling of lectures (current organization, non-binding): course attendance: 2 days / week lectures + 1 day project-work / team-work IS1: summer semester currently, Thursday / Friday lectures + Wednesday project-work / team-work IS2: winter semester currently, Thursday / Friday lectures + Wednesday project-work / team-work other days for self-organized work / project-work / team-work Individual specialization and emphasis in different facets and application domains of information systems possible due to a high amount of electives and project work: compulsory electives seminar selected topics of information systems with individual topics project information systems with a high degree of practical training and high practical relevance comprises 2 semesters interdisciplinary teams, on average 6 persons introduction into different aspects of modern information systems adequate depth and complexity including technology selection and characteristic phases of team dynamics 9

10 Master IS: Full-time study with appealing characteristics Lectures in english: as soon as a student from one of our partner universities is enrolled for the master course, the lectures (there are only very few ones that will still be in German) will be given in english in fact, the lectures are given in english Admission in summer and in winter: semester 1 and 2 are offered only once per year (see module manual, both orderings of semester 1 and 2 are possible) the current ordering is as follows: summer semester: first 1. Semester IS1, then 2. Semester IS2 winter semester: first 2. Semester IS2, then 1. Semester IS1 project information systems : inter-semester blending of students possible such that long-running and complex projects can be handed-over and continued smoothly and that newbies can benefit from experienced team members 10

This requires, also driven by the ever increasing complexity of information systems, the realization of several components as autonomous systems, i.e. these are equipped with a greater scope in decision-making. 13
