1 Computing and ICT YEAR 10 ICT This half-year course offers opportunities for students to develop a range of skills in digital technologies. This course is recommended preparation for ICT101, and provides an introduction to ICT 105 and PRG201.. This course will include topics on Multimedia Web design Computer applications Programming How computers work Communicating through computers Problem solving Use of hardware Simple programming File and data management A range of applications Assessment will based on the Technology Curriculum and will be mainly project-based. ICT (ICT101) The course offers students opportunities to explore the worlds of multimedia and web design. This course is a prerequisite for ICT 201. Pre-entry in to ENG101 or ENG102. Year 10 ICT would be useful preparation for this course. This course focuses on how to communicate messages through digital media, and on the impact of ICT on society. Topics will include Web sites: design and creation Graphic manipulation Multimedia: design and creation Desktop publishing: design and creation Technological process Students will spend some time working independently on a project to solve a problem and create a portfolio of work. Research Planning Design A range of applications. Assessment will be selected from Technology Achievement Standards Level 1 and Computing Unit Standards.
2 ICT (ICT201) ICT (ICT301) This course builds on the ICT101 course and offers students opportunities to explore the worlds of multimedia and web design in more depth. It is a prerequisite for ICT301 which offers University Entrance and Scholarship in Technology. Students need to have succeeded with Level 1 Technology Achievement Standards in ICT. This course focuses on effective communication through digital media, and on the relationships between ICT and society. Topics will include Web sites: design and creation Graphic manipulation Multimedia: design and creation Desktop publishing: design and creation Technological process Students will select from a range of software to create a solution to a problem that they select. Software to be used will be negotiated between each student and the class teacher. Software that is currently available on the school network includes Blender Photoshop GameMaker Scratch Visual Basic InDesign Illustrator Front Page And more! Students will be supported to develop further skills in the software of their choice, with less confident students being advised to use familiar software. Assessment will be selected from Level 2 Technology Achievement Standards and Computing Unit Standards. COST Up to $10 for local trips. This course builds on the ICT201 course and offers students opportunities to explore further the worlds of multimedia and web design. It offers University Entrance and Scholarship in Technology. Students need to have succeeded with Level 2 Technology Achievement Standards in ICT. This course focuses on effective communication through two or more digital media applications, and also on analysis of digital solutions to contemporary issues. Students will communicate with members of the community to produce a project that will benefit both parties. Students will be able to select from any software available on the school network, including Blender Photoshop GameMaker Scratch Visual Basic InDesign Illustrator Front Page And more! Students will be expected to work independently to extend their skills in their chosen applications. Digital solutions to contemporary issues will be examined and analysed. Assessment will be selected from Level 3 Technology Achievement Standards and Computing Unit Standards. University Entrance in Technology can be earned by achieving 14 credits from the Level 3 Technology Achievement Standards. COST.
3 COMPUTER (ICT105) This course offers students an introduction to a range of basic computer skills. It is recommended preparation for COM201.. Topics offered in 2009 will include Computer graphics Internet research Spreadsheets Web page creation Communicating through computers Problem solving Use of hardware File and data management A range of applications Assessment will include Unit Standards and Information Management Achievement Standards at Level 1.. COMPUTER (COM201) This course offers students the opportunity to develop their ability to use common computer applications and peripherals. S, although success in ICT105 is good preparation for this course. Topics offered in 2009 will begin with the compulsory units: PC Systems Data Other topics offered are likely to include Graphics Spreadsheets Database Peripherals Digitising text Design, creation and evaluation of computer-based solutions Use of networked Windows computers and a range of commonly used software and hardware Internet search and research techniques Students will complete Level 2 Computing Unit Standards. These units contribute to the National Certificate in Computing Level 2 as well as to NCEA Level 2..
4 COMPUTER (COM301) This course offers students the opportunity to develop their ability to use common computer applications and peripherals. S Twenty credits from COM201. Students will develop new skills and knowledge in a range of computing topics. They will also learn to identify a need by interviewing stakeholders, write a brief, plan a solution, present a solution to key stakeholders and evaluate their final solution. Topics will be agreed on after discussion between students and teacher at the start of the year. Those likely to be offered at an advanced level in 2009 include: Advanced PC Systems Word processing Spreadsheets Presentation Multimedia Databases Desktop Publishing Design, creation and evaluation of computer-based solutions Use of networked Windows computers and a range of software and hardware Internet search and research techniques Goal setting and time management Assessment is based on Unit Standards at Level 3. University Entrance in Computing can be earned by achieving 14 credits from the Level 3 Computing Unit Standards. These Unit Standards also contribute to the National Certificate in Computing Level 3 Students taking Programming at the same time can only gain University Entrance once.
5 PROGRAMMING (PRG201) This course is designed for students who have good computer skills already, and want to learn how to write computer programs. Students will use different programming environments and will also learn about program design. S Satisfactory performance in an entrance test of basic logic and computer skills. This course teaches basic computer programming skills. Students will learn how to design, create and debug programs. Programming languages include QBasic, GameMaker and Visual Basic. Students will also consolidate their knowledge and understanding of the function of personal computer systems and management of computer data. Sequence, selection and repetition Variables and data types Structure diagrams Pseudo-code Deskchecks Writing programs Debugging programs Documenting programs Understanding design briefs Writing and following action plans Testing procedures Assessment is based on Unit Standards at Level 1 and 2. However the course focuses more on developing good programming skills than on assessment. PROGRAMMING (PRG301) This course is designed for students who have some experience with computer programming and want to develop their skills further. Students will use different programming environments and will also improve their ability to design programs. S Satisfactory completion of the Level 2 Programming course including achievement of Unit Standards 18739, and This course develops valuable computer programming skills, which are sought after in the computing industry. Students will develop their ability to design, create and debug programs. A variety of programming languages are offered in consultation with students. Students will also extend their understanding of the function of computer components and software Writing programs Debugging programs Documenting programs Writing and understanding design briefs Writing and following action plans Consultation with stakeholders Testing procedures GUI programming interface design Working with external files Assessment is based on Unit Standards at Level 3. University Entrance in Computing can be earned by achieving 14 credits from the Level 3 Computing Unit Standards. These Unit Standards also contribute to the National Certificate in Computing Level 3. Students taking Computer Skills at the same time can only gain University Entrance once. One or more Achievement Standards may be entered by suitable students.
