CONTRACTORS WELCOME COME PREPARED TO WORK IMPORTANCE OF PERVIOUS CONCRETE CONTRACTOR CERTIFICATION Certification through the National Ready Mix Concrete Association (NRMCA) program provides you with the knowledge of the advantages and benefits of the proper use and installation of pervious concrete as well as the pitfalls and problems that can occur when pervious concrete is improperly installed. Everyone involved in the construction project benefits from the use of certified installers to build a pervious concrete project. Proper performance of the installation techniques improves the reliability of the finished product, both from a visual and a structural standpoint as well as its most important feature, the ability to act as a storm water management system. In addition, NRMCA Certified Pervious Concrete finishers will enjoy the benefit of being added to list of pre-qualified bidders based on the specifications being used by project developers.

2 DEFINITION of the Pervious Concrete CERTIFICATION PROGRAM NRMCA Certified Technician is a person who is knowledgeable about proper procedures to place, consolidate, finish, edge, joint, cure and protect pervious concrete flatwork, but who lacks sufficient work experience to qualify as a pervious concrete flatwork finisher or a professional who wants to be knowledgeable about this product. NRMCA Certified Installer is a person who has demonstrated the ability to place, consolidate, finish, edge, joint, cure and protect pervious concrete flatwork and has documented a limited project-based field experience in placing pervious concrete. Scope and Knowledge - The primary technical resource for this program is the National Ready Mix Concrete Association textbook. The programs require knowledge in the following areas of concrete construction: 1) Basic pervious concrete history 2) Pervious concrete materials and mix proportioning 3) Pervious Concrete control tests 4) Proper use of finishing tools 5) Placing, consolidation, and finishing 6) Edging, jointing, curing, and protection Certification Requirements - Pervious Concrete Certified Technician & Installer While there are no prerequisites in either training or experience, the written exams are designed so that only knowledgeable finishers or technicians will pass. Therefore, a training course has been designed to help you prepare for the examination. Applicants for Pervious Concrete Certification must first attend a four hour classroom course on Pervious Concrete. This course will consist of viewing the NRMCA Pervious Concrete Certification Training presentation, which normally takes about three hours, followed by a review period. The NRMCA will grant Technician certification only to those applicants who obtain a passing grade on the written examination. Installer certifications must also successfully complete the NRMCA performance examination. The NRMCA written examination is "closed book" which means that no technical materials or notes are allowed in the room during the examinations and a maximum of two hours shall be permitted for completion. Oral administration of the written examination shall be permitted, upon approval by NECSA. The examination consists of approximately 50 multiple choice questions. The passing grade for the NRMCA written exam for Pervious Concrete Technician certification is 75%. During the performance examination each examinee must place, consolidate, finish, edge, joint, begin curing and provide initial protection for a pervious concrete slab. The examiner will observe and evaluate the techniques used and record passing or failing grades on the various individual procedures. A passing grade is defined as "no significant variation and no more than 2 variations from proper procedure. You will be allowed two trials on the day of the performance examination for each standard. Failure of any one of the prescribed Pervious Concrete standards after two trials will constitute failure of the entire Performance Examination. Grading of the Performance Examination is on a Pass-Fail basis only. Since this is a training session as well as a testing session the examiner is allowed to respond to any questions but may not assist in performing any test methods. Immediately following completion of your trial, the examiner will tell you whether you have passed or failed the examination. If a failure has occurred, the examiner will tell you which particular part of the standard or test method was performed incorrectly. Re-Examination Written Examination - Failure of the Written Examination will require re-examination of the entire Written Examination at the expense of the examinee. It is your responsibility to request a re-examination. Performance Examination - Failure on performance during the Performance Examination will require reexamination of the entire Performance Examination at the expense of the examinee. It is your responsibility to request a re-examination. After the classroom session, YOU will be required to assist with the placement of the pervious concrete. The placements are usually 4 yards and take about 40 minutes. Please dress appropriately AND make sure you bring the following equipment: Hard Hat & Vest Magnesium Floats and Edging Tools * Chalk Line DO T USE aluminum or wood floats as they can tear the pervious concrete surface Water Bucket & Brush 2 - Concrete Rakes 2 - Square Nose Shovels 2 - Hand Tampers 6 mil plastic Staple gun to secure plastic Rebar or wood to hold down plastic in middle
