Research & Development - Performance Group Do the performance and scalability analysis of the VMware products. Optimize and improve the performance and scalability across a variety of configurations. Find the root cause of bottlenecks and initiate performance improvements. Work with developers to resolve performance problems, and implement solutions and performance optimizations. Develop tools for understanding and comparing performance data. Develop sound methodologies for accurate performance comparisons, as well as study workload characteristics to create a balanced suite of performance workloads. Contributed significantly towards improving performance of the VMware vsphere products, namely VMware VirtualCenter, and making them more scalable. - VirtualCenter High Availability Flagship feature for the next release to provide High Availability of 99.99% for the infrastructure management product VirtualCenter. Work in progress on the performance and the scalability analysis. - vcenter Server Appliance Boot Performance Booting all the services (nearly 25 services) within vcenter Server Appliance fast is a pre-requisite to VC high availability. Research & Development - Performance Group - continued - - VMware vcenter Server 5.1 Database Performance Improvements Provided better performance, lower latency, and streamlined statistics in the vcenter Server in version 5.1. Statistics collection creates the biggest performance impact on the vcenter Server database. In vsphere 5.1, changed several aspects of statistics collection to improve the overall performance of the database. This is a major architectural change in the way the relevant data is persisted to the tables, by partitioning the tables instead of using staging tables. In addition, by removing the staging tables, statistics collection is more robust, resolving the issues described in KB and KB , namely losing statistics data. Scalability is also improved by allowing larger inventories to be supported because they dont take so long to read/write data from the old staging tables. Furthermore, reduced the resource overhead of the database through enhancements in stored procedures in the database. - Lotus, VMware distributed directory system Various functionalities in VMware vsphere, such as Single-Sign-On identity authentication, tagging, licensing services rely on Lotus, VMware distributed directory system. It utilizes OpenLDAP MDB ( Memory-Mapped Database ) as backend. Worked on a comprehensive performance characterization of the Lotus service, improving the scalability and the performance significantly. - vcenter Server Appliance Deployment The deployment process of vcenter Server Appliance, which was originally taking in the order of hours, is not only the very first customer interaction with the VMware system, but it also has a huge impact as a constant cost for every deployment for thousands of appliances for developers and testers internally. Improved 6x the deployment process. - VMware Virtual Infrastructure Client Worked on end-to-end performance of the VI client, improving the user responsiveness and individual operation latencies. Contributed towards various components, including summary pages, progressive page listing, licensing tabs, maps,... Ph.D. Dissertation Title Topic Achievements Experience Advisors Detecting Malicious Routers I have been interested in a simply stated, yet increasingly important network security problem: how to detect the existence of compromised routers in a routing system and remove them from the routing fabric. I have studied different aspects of this problem combining science and engineering. I have specified the problem of detecting routers with incorrect packet forwarding behavior on the abstract level, provided a general framework for the protocols addressing this problem, explored the design space of protocols that implement such a detector, developed various such protocols, implemented and evaluated prototype systems, which are inexpensive enough for practical implementation at scale. Over the course of my Ph.D. study, I have gained general research expertise as an independent researcher: I have been trained, first, to identify, abstract, specify and formalize a problem; second, to develop protocols implementing various specifications; and then to build up a complete system including distributed computing, kernel programming, network routing protocols, traffic shaping. Furthermore, I am experienced in testing and evaluating the distributed systems using network simulators(ns2) and network emulation testbeds(emulab, Deterlab). Prof. Stefan Savage and Prof. Keith Marzullo Awards 2005 The William C. Carter Award. The award is presented annually since 1997 to recognize an individual who has made a significant contribution to the field of dependable computing through his or her graduate dissertation research.
