Challenges for Future Networked Embedded Systems I.G. Niemegeers Centre for Wireless and Personal Communication (CWPC) Delft University of Technology PROGRESS Workshop 2006 Networks and Connected Systems Utrecht, May 11,
Overview Introduction Drivers for change Communication technologies for future embedded networks Characteristics of future embedded networks New requirements Considerations for designing protocols and mechanisms Positioning of present PROGRESS Network & Connected Embedded Systems research Conclusions and recommendations 2
Moore s Law More for less! 3
Recent market research predictions By 2010: 40 percent of all potentially networkable electronic or electromechanical devices will be connected (Harbor) Sales of 14 billion network-enabling chips by the same year (Forrester Research) 2.4 billion RFID tags have been deployed up to this year and another 1.5 billion are expected to be deployed in 2006 (Roussos). The age of ubiquitous computing and communication is approaching fast, and a large part of it will be embedded 4
Wireless in the future networked world (4G) emergency network Access Networks Global home network sensor network BAN PAN corporate network ad hoc network VAN ad hoc network mesh network Sensor network 5
Classical Networking Characterised by infrastructural thinking and long term investments Industrial players: large telecommunications and Internet equipment manufacturers, service providers and operators Networks are highly managed entities that serve as a generic infrastructure for a large variety of services Networks are surrounded and supported by organisational entities that are professional and take care of technical and financial management This will change drastically! 6
New networking Ubiquitous computing and communication has created new perspectives leading to new classes of networks: Infrastructureless ad hoc networks, Infrastructure (wired and wireless) Hybrid networks Dynamic networks Examples sensor networks vehicular and inter-vehicle networks ambient intelligence networks personal networks, etc. 7
Embedded networks Embedded within systems supporting distributed applications Communication does not necessarily involve people, and, although they support the activities of people, they are deliberately made invisible to their users Application domains: health care, ambient assisted living, transportation, personal networks, future home networks, vehicle control, traffic management, safety management, security systems, crisis management, military command and control systems, etc. 8
Some New Generic Applications Ambient intelligence Sensorised universe Person-centric Personal Networks Group-centric Fednets Interaction of all these networks 9
Future Home Network (Ambient intelligence) From: IOP GenCom project Future Home Networks 10
Personal Network Network centered around a person and her/his needs Devices can be anywhere, not necessarily in the vicinity of the person Personal Area Network (PAN) Remote personal devices Interconnection structure (Internet, UMTS, WLAN, ) Remote foreign devices Personal Network (PN) Local foreign devices 11
Fednet: Ad Hoc federation of autonomous networks Fednet Personal Networks PN3 Member of the federation PN2 PN1 12
Fednet: Sharing sensor information in an emergency Personal Networks PN3 Fednet PN1 PN2 PN4 Fednet 13
Cooperating embedded networks for Ambient Assisted Living Family Elderly person WSN = Wireless Sensor Network 14
Interaction of Personal Networks and Ambient Networks Ambient networking Person-centered networking Infrastructure networks Home network Corporate network Ad-hoc network Vehiculararea network Core PAN PAN Secure interaction 15
New characteristics of embedded networks The heterogeneity of the networks and their components New architectures and protocols (IPv?) The potentially very large number of devices: The Internet of Devices/Things Scalability The dynamics of the system: dynamic networks Need for a new QoS framework, for measuring, analyzing and testing the dynamic behaviour of embedded networks 16
Architecture Structuring in terms of functional entities and their interaction via underlying services to achieve the overall functionality required by the applications Goal is to ensure that the design is consistent and coherent satisfies the requirements technology agnostic (future proof) 17
Dynamic networks Examples Devices join/leave the network Networks split/merge, dock with infrastructure Architectural mappings change (e.g., elected functions) Quality of the links changes (e.g., fading, obstructions, cross-layer control). Causes Changing mission of the network: role they play in supporting a particular application Changing context Energy management and operating mode (awake, asleep, standby and dead) Moving entities, people, vehicles, robots and machine parts Node, link, topology changes at various levels (link, network and above) are routine occurrences 18
New requirements The need to be self-organising and self-managing Trustworthiness Context awareness Keep complexity hidden to programmers and users Low cost 19
Self-organising autonomous systems Self-configuration and reconfiguration under varying and unpredictable conditions Self-optimizing Self-healing Self-protection (against threats) Context-aware Adhere to open standards Anticipate the optimized resources to meet the users needs Keep complexity hidden New research field: Autonomous computing (IBM) 20
Considerations for designing protocols and mechanisms Timeliness of the processes directly tied to the application requirements or the user perception Usage of communication bandwidth, since in a radio environment bandwidth will always be scarce Complexity of the protocols and procedures Energy awareness 21
PROGRESS Network & Connected Embedded Systems -Projects Development of a software-radio-based embedded mobile Modeling and performance analysis of telecommunication systems Development of compositional programming techniques for networked heterogeneous embedded systems Internet based monitoring and control of embedded systems Quality of service of in-home digital networks Feather-light Distributed Systems A structure for maintaining a shared world model in a dynamic environment between differentiated embedded systems and their interaction with human supervisors 22
PROGRESS Network & Connected Embedded Systems -Research themes Software radio, Energy awareness Context awareness Network dynamics Network heterogeneity Ease of programming 23
Conclusions and Recommendations (1) Ubiquitous computing and communication will spawn a myriad of networked embedded systems, with a very wide spectrum of applications The challenge is no less than designing complex open systems, that have to satisfy stringent functional and nonfunctional requirements and have to find market acceptance simplicity, efficiency, trust, low cost 24
Conclusions and Recommendations (2) The area is very big and a lot of difficult issues need to be tackled to realise the full potential of embedded networked systems European and national network and telecommunications research programmes have started to tackle these issues seriously due to the shift in focus from core and access network research to the communication and cooperation issues of the huge number of devices that will be communication- and computing-capable. Consequence: strong cooperation of the embedded systems research programmes and the network and telecommunications programmes (e.g., Freeband and IOP GenCom) recommended 25
