Definitions of USN, M2M, IoT, UN, and UC by International Standards and Papers Younghwan CHOI, Hyoung Jun KIM
Table of Contents Ubiquitous Sensor Network (USN) Internet of Things (IoT) Machine to Machine (M2M) Ubiquitous Network (UN) Ubiquitous Networking & Ubiquitous Computing
Ubiquitous Sensor Network (USN) A conceptual network built over existing physical networks which make use of sensed data and provide knowledge services to anyone, anywhere and at anytime, and where information is generated by using context awareness Recommendation ITU-T F.744 (2009), Y.2221 (2010)
Ubiquitous Sensor Network (USN) (cont d) A conceptual structured network which deliver sensed information and knowledge services to anyone at anywhere and anytime where the information and knowledge is developed by using context awareness. The part of USN could be built on a sensor network which either covers a wide geographical area or supports several different applications, or both. ITU-T Q6/17 X.usnsec-1 & X.usnsec-3,
Internet of Things (IoT) (1/4) A global network infrastructure, linking physical and virtual objects through the exploitation of data capture and communication capabilities. This infrastructure includes existing and evolving Internet and network developments. It will offer specific objectidentification, sensor and connection capability as the basis for the development of independent cooperative services and applications. These will be characterized by a high degree of autonomous data capture, event transfer, network connectivity and interoperability. Newsletter of CASAGRAS project,
Internet of Things (IoT) Internet? (2/4) The Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks that use the standard Internet Protocol Suite (TCP/IP) to serve billions of users worldwide. It is a network of networks that consists of millions of private, public, academic, business, and government networks, of local to global scope, that are linked by a broad array of electronic and optical networking technologies.
Internet of Things (IoT) Internet? (3/4) The conventional Internet is based on the TCP/IP protocol suite but any network based on the TCP/IP protocol suite cannot belong to the Internet because private networks and telecommunication networks are not part of the Internet even though they are based on the TCP/IP protocol suite. Similarly to this logic, some of things may be connected to the Internet and they may be said to be part of the Internet but some of things cannot be connected to the Internet due to limited capabilities or other reasons but connected to private networks or telecommunication networks according to application purposes. Thus, the Internet should be treated as a general communication infrastructure, not as the conventional one. COM16-C482 in the meeting of ITU-T Q25/16,
Internet of Things (IoT) Thing? (4/4) A thing could be defined as a real/physical or digital/virtual entity that exists and moves in space and time and is capable of being identified. Things are commonly identified either by assigned identification numbers, names and/or location addresses. H. Sundmaeker et al., Vision and Challenges for Realising the Internet of Things, Cluster of European Research Projects on the Internet of Things, March Ability to sense and/or actuate, Small (or not necessarily), Limited capability (or not necessarily), Energy/power limited, Connected to physical world, Intermittent connectivity, Mobile (potentially), Of interest to people, Managed by devices, not people Characteristics of a thing, IoT research bar BoF in 77th IETF,
Machine to Machine (M2M) A form of data communication between entities that do not necessarily need human interaction 3GPP TR , Machine-to-Machine involves communication without (or only limited)human intervention. M2M is about combining electronics, telecommunication and information technologies in order to connect remote devices and systems. Machine 2 Machine, ESTI TC M2M,
Ubiquitous Network (UN) The convergence and interconnection of computing devices some with advanced user interfaces others being simple sensors and detectors with a pervasive communications network comprised of both wired and wireless segments. Background Paper, ITU Workshop on Ubiquitous Network Societies, While ubiquitous networking is a networking capability to support various types of applications/services requiring 5C and 5 Any as well as communications using Human-to-Human, Human-to-Object and Object-to-Object, the ubiquitous network can be seen as an enabled instance of the ubiquitous networking. RFID and the Internet of Things: Enablers of Ubiquitous Computing and Network, Draft White Paper WP4, CASAGRAS,
Ubiquitous Networking A networking capability to support various types of applications/services requiring 5C and 5 Any as well as communications using Human-to-Human, Human-to-Object and Object-to-Object RFID and the Internet of Things: Enablers of Ubiquitous Computing and Network, Draft White Paper WP4, CASAGRAS, The ability for persons and/or devices to access services and communicate while minimizing technical restrictions regarding where, when and how these services are accessed, in the context of the service(s) subscribed to. Recommendations ITU-T Y.2002 (2009)
Ubiquitous Computing (1/2) Continually interacting with hundreds of nearby wirelessly connected computers Computing devices will become embedded in everyday objects and places. Designers will develop intuitive, intelligent interfaces for computing devices to make them simple and unobtrusive for users. Communications networks will connect these devices together and will extend to become available anywhere and anytime Mark Weiser, Some Computer Science Issues in Ubiquitous Computing, Communications of the ACM, 36 (7), 75-84, 1993.
Ubiquitous Computing (2/2) The phrase ubiquitous computing term does not define a specific technical system, but it expresses a paradigm shift away from the current user-centric aspects of computing towards intelligent networks. Various terms are in use to describe this paradigm. Some of these are general such as "pervasive computing," "ambient intelligence," and more recently, "everyware,", while others primarily concern the objects involved, so they call it as "physical computing," the "Internet of Things," "haptic computing," and "things that think. RFID and the Internet of Things: Enablers of Ubiquitous Computing and Network, Draft White Paper WP4, CASAGRAS,
