2 RCI Upgrade Executive Summary REQUEST Support for the funding request for upgrades to UCLA s Research Cyberinfrastructure including implementation of new networking technologies / standards and integration of the RCI into the existing campus Science DMZ. CAMPUS BENEFIT Completion of the proposed work will provide the performance, capacity, and redundancy capabilities needed to support current research requirements and lay the foundation for future growth in high performance computing, data storage and movement, and advanced networking capabilities, in a sustainable manner.

3 RCI Background Started in 3Q 2007 as an add-on to the (then) ATS departmental network Originally supported just the CNSI data center with a link to MSA for storage Now spans CNSI, MSA and the POD. Externally supports Globus Online, XSEDE, Open Science Grid, etc. 20X growth in hardware, 39X growth in computational power 11X growth to 2,200+ users across almost all departments on campus 42X growth to 6.3PB* of storage between CASS and HPC Most of this growth occurred in the last two years Original CASS 2.3PB buy sold in 19 months *Includes an in-process 2.5PB renewal buy for CASS

4 RCI Upgrade Major Goals Meet faculty requirements and expectations for research services and capabilities in an efficient and sustainable manner Upgrade the Research Cyberinfrastructure to production-level performance, capacity and redundancy Implement new networking technologies and standards (SDN, DCN, 40G/100G) Reflect the latest Campus CI Plan, the CC*DNI and EAGER/GENI grants, and the Pacific Rim Project Note: The RCI Upgrade Proposal was vetted as part of the NSF CC*DNI award process Become a formal and seamless part of the campus Science DMZ Address Medical Center research infrastructure and their need for HIPAA-compliant storage, data transfer and computing Secure sustained funding for a five-year refresh cycle

7 RCI Upgrade Key Benefits Leverages: Sponsorship from IDRE, IT Services and OIT Warren Mori (IDRE), Andrew Wissmiller (IT Services), Jim Davis (OIT) Synergy with IT Services Full integration with the Science DMZ Shared network support between IDRE RTG and IT Services IDRE RTG services Makes them more attractive and usable which reduces overall cost to the campus The Campus Cyberinfrastructure, Data Networking Innovation grant Allows us to build out from a solid core using NSF funding.

8 RCI Upgrade Key Benefits Enables: Unrestricted, high performance access to internal and external resources A coherent and seamless network architecture with applicable security measures separate from standard campus needs. Implementation of advanced networking and data handling capabilities A funding model that supports ongoing maintenance and refresh

9 RCI Upgrade Financials The total proposal cost is $1.4M $500K is being funded through an NSF CC*DNI grant $900K is required in startup funding

10 RCI Upgrade Conclusion This proposal is necessary to meet current research faculty requirements and to give us a solid foundation for growth We have a sound technical plan and the right people to make it happen 35% of the proposal has already been funded by the NSF We have strong support and endorsement from IDRE, IT Services and OIT A shared network support model (IDRE RTG/IT Services) will ensure performance and stability Implementing this plan will provide world class compute, storage and advanced networking capabilities to the campus
